Numbers 31:2 נְקֹ֗ם “ Take vengeance nə·qōm נִקְמַת֙ . . . niq·maṯ מֵאֵ֖ת on mê·’êṯ הַמִּדְיָנִ֑ים the Midianites ham·miḏ·yā·nîm בְּנֵ֣י for the Israelites bə·nê יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל . . . . yiś·rā·’êl אַחַ֖ר After that , ’a·ḥar תֵּאָסֵ֥ף you will be gathered tê·’ā·sêp̄ אֶל־ to ’el- עַמֶּֽיךָ׃ your people . ” ‘am·me·ḵā Numbers 31:3 מֹשֶׁה֙ So Moses mō·šeh וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר told way·ḏab·bêr אֶל־ . . . ’el- הָעָ֣ם the people hā·‘ām לֵאמֹ֔ר . . . , lê·mōr הֵחָלְצ֧וּ “ Arm hê·ḥā·lə·ṣū מֵאִתְּכֶ֛ם . . . mê·’it·tə·ḵem אֲנָשִׁ֖ים some of your men ’ă·nā·šîm לַצָּבָ֑א for war , laṣ·ṣā·ḇā וְיִהְיוּ֙ that they may go wə·yih·yū עַל־ against ‘al- מִדְיָ֔ן the Midianites miḏ·yān לָתֵ֥ת and execute lā·ṯêṯ יְהוָ֖ה YHWH’s Yah·weh נִקְמַת־ vengeance niq·maṯ- בְּמִדְיָֽן׃ on them . bə·miḏ·yān Numbers 31:4 תִּשְׁלְח֖וּ Send tiš·lə·ḥū לַצָּבָֽא׃ into battle laṣ·ṣā·ḇā אֶ֚לֶף a thousand men ’e·lep̄ לְכֹל֙ from each lə·ḵōl מַטּ֣וֹת tribe maṭ·ṭō·wṯ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiś·rā·’êl לַמַּטֶּ֔ה - lam·maṭ·ṭeh אֶ֖לֶף - ’e·lep̄ לַמַּטֶּ֑ה . . . . ” lam·maṭ·ṭeh Numbers 31:5 מֵאַלְפֵ֣י So a thousand men mê·’al·p̄ê וַיִּמָּֽסְרוּ֙ were recruited way·yim·mā·sə·rū לַמַּטֶּ֑ה from each tribe lam·maṭ·ṭeh אֶ֖לֶף - ’e·lep̄ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel — yiś·rā·’êl שְׁנֵים־ twelve šə·nêm- עָשָׂ֥ר . . . ‘ā·śār אֶ֖לֶף thousand ’e·lep̄ חֲלוּצֵ֥י armed ḥă·lū·ṣê צָבָֽא׃ for war . ṣā·ḇā Numbers 31:6 מֹשֶׁ֛ה And Moses mō·šeh וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח sent way·yiš·laḥ אֹתָ֥ם - ’ō·ṯām אֶ֥לֶף the thousand ’e·lep̄ לַמַּטֶּ֖ה from each tribe lam·maṭ·ṭeh לַצָּבָ֑א into battle , laṣ·ṣā·ḇā אֹ֠תָם - ’ō·ṯām וְאֶת־ along with wə·’eṯ- פִּ֨ינְחָ֜ס Phinehas pî·nə·ḥās בֶּן־ son ben- אֶלְעָזָ֤ר of Eleazar ’el·‘ā·zār הַכֹּהֵן֙ the priest , hak·kō·hên לַצָּבָ֔א . . . laṣ·ṣā·ḇā בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ who took with him bə·yā·ḏōw וּכְלֵ֥י the vessels ū·ḵə·lê הַקֹּ֛דֶשׁ of the sanctuary haq·qō·ḏeš וַחֲצֹצְר֥וֹת and the trumpets wa·ḥă·ṣō·ṣə·rō·wṯ הַתְּרוּעָ֖ה for signaling . hat·tə·rū·‘āh Numbers 31:7 וַֽיִּצְבְּאוּ֙ Then they waged war way·yiṣ·bə·’ū עַל־ against ‘al- מִדְיָ֔ן Midian , miḏ·yān כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר as ka·’ă·šer יְהוָ֖ה YHWH Yah·weh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- צִוָּ֥ה had commanded ṣiw·wāh מֹשֶׁ֑ה Moses , mō·šeh וַיַּֽהַרְג֖וּ and they killed way·ya·har·ḡū כָּל־ every kāl- זָכָֽר׃ male . zā·ḵār Numbers 31:8 וְאֶת־ - wə·’eṯ- עַל־ Among ‘al- חַלְלֵיהֶ֗ם the slain ḥal·lê·hem אֶת־ ’eṯ- הָרְג֣וּ [were] hā·rə·ḡū מַלְכֵ֨י - mal·ḵê מִדְיָ֜ן - miḏ·yān
