Ecclesiastes 1:1 דִּבְרֵי֙ [These are] the words diḇ·rê קֹהֶ֣לֶת of the Teacher , qō·he·leṯ בֶּן־ the son ben- דָּוִ֔ד of David , dā·wiḏ מֶ֖לֶךְ king me·leḵ בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ in Jerusalem : bî·rū·šā·lim Ecclesiastes 1:2 הֲבֵ֤ל “ Futility hă·ḇêl הֲבָלִים֙ of futilities , ” hă·ḇā·lîm אָמַ֣ר says ’ā·mar קֹהֶ֔לֶת the Teacher , qō·he·leṯ הֲבֵ֥ל “ futility hă·ḇêl הֲבָלִ֖ים of futilities ! hă·ḇā·lîm הַכֹּ֥ל Everything hak·kōl הָֽבֶל׃ is futile ! ” hā·ḇel Ecclesiastes 1:3 מַה־ What mah- לָֽאָדָ֑ם does a man lā·’ā·ḏām יִּתְר֖וֹן gain yiṯ·rō·wn בְּכָל־ from all bə·ḵāl עֲמָל֔וֹ his labor , ‘ă·mā·lōw שֶֽׁיַּעֲמֹ֖ל at which he toils še·ya·‘ă·mōl תַּ֥חַת under ta·ḥaṯ הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ the sun ? haš·šā·meš Ecclesiastes 1:4 דּ֤וֹר Generations dō·wr הֹלֵךְ֙ come hō·lêḵ וְד֣וֹר and generations wə·ḏō·wr בָּ֔א go , bā וְהָאָ֖רֶץ but the earth wə·hā·’ā·reṣ עֹמָֽדֶת׃ remains ‘ō·mā·ḏeṯ לְעוֹלָ֥ם forever . lə·‘ō·w·lām Ecclesiastes 1:5 הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ The sun haš·še·meš וְזָרַ֥ח rises wə·zā·raḥ הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ and the sun haš·šā·meš וּבָ֣א sets ; ū·ḇā שׁוֹאֵ֛ף it hurries back šō·w·’êp̄ וְאֶ֨ל־ . . . wə·’el- מְקוֹמ֔וֹ to mə·qō·w·mōw שָֽׁם׃ where šām ה֖וּא it hū זוֹרֵ֥חַֽ rises . zō·w·rê·aḥ Ecclesiastes 1:6 הָר֔וּחַ The wind hā·rū·aḥ הוֹלֵךְ֙ blows hō·w·lêḵ אֶל־ vvv ’el- דָּר֔וֹם southward , dā·rō·wm וְסוֹבֵ֖ב then turns wə·sō·w·ḇêḇ אֶל־ vvv ’el- צָפ֑וֹן northward ; ṣā·p̄ō·wn סוֹבֵ֤ב׀ round sō·w·ḇêḇ סֹבֵב֙ [and] round sō·ḇêḇ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ it swirls , hō·w·lêḵ שָׁ֥ב ever returning šāḇ וְעַל־ on wə·‘al- הָרֽוּחַ׃ [its] hā·rū·aḥ סְבִיבֹתָ֖יו course . sə·ḇî·ḇō·ṯāw Ecclesiastes 1:7 כָּל־ All kāl- הַנְּחָלִים֙ the rivers han·nə·ḥā·lîm הֹלְכִ֣ים flow hō·lə·ḵîm אֶל־ into ’el- הַיָּ֔ם the sea , hay·yām וְהַיָּ֖ם yet the sea wə·hay·yām אֵינֶ֣נּוּ is never ’ê·nen·nū מָלֵ֑א full ; mā·lê אֶל־ to ’el- מְק֗וֹם the place mə·qō·wm שֶׁ֤הַנְּחָלִים֙ from which the streams še·han·nə·ḥā·lîm הֹֽלְכִ֔ים come , hō·lə·ḵîm שָׁ֛ם there šām שָׁבִ֖ים again šā·ḇîm הֵ֥ם they hêm לָלָֽכֶת׃ flow . lā·lā·ḵeṯ Ecclesiastes 1:8 כָּל־ All kāl- הַדְּבָרִ֣ים things had·də·ḇā·rîm יְגֵעִ֔ים are wearisome , yə·ḡê·‘îm לֹא־ more lō- יוּכַ֥ל . . . yū·ḵal אִ֖ישׁ than one ’îš לְדַבֵּ֑ר can describe ; lə·ḏab·bêr עַ֙יִן֙ the eye ‘a·yin לֹא־ is not lō- תִשְׂבַּ֥ע satisfied ṯiś·ba‘
