מִצְרַ֖יִם The Egyptians miṣ·ra·yim וַיָּרֵ֥עוּ mistreated way·yā·rê·‘ū לָ֛נוּ us lā·nū וְלַאֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃ and our fathers , wə·la·’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū Numbers 20:16 וַנִּצְעַ֤ק and when we cried out wan·niṣ·‘aq אֶל־ to ’el- יְהוָה֙ YHWH , Yah·weh וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע He heard way·yiš·ma‘ קֹלֵ֔נוּ our voice , qō·lê·nū וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח sent way·yiš·laḥ מַלְאָ֔ךְ an angel , mal·’āḵ וַיֹּצִאֵ֖נוּ and brought us way·yō·ṣi·’ê·nū מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם out of Egypt . mim·miṣ·rā·yim וְהִנֵּה֙ Now look , wə·hin·nêh אֲנַ֣חְנוּ we ’ă·naḥ·nū בְקָדֵ֔שׁ are in Kadesh , ḇə·qā·ḏêš עִ֖יר a city ‘îr קְצֵ֥ה on the edge qə·ṣêh גְבוּלֶֽךָ׃ of your territory . ḡə·ḇū·le·ḵā Numbers 20:17 נָּ֣א Please nā נַעְבְּרָה־ let us pass na‘·bə·rāh- בְאַרְצֶ֗ךָ through your land . ḇə·’ar·ṣe·ḵā לֹ֤א We will not lō נַעֲבֹר֙ cut na·‘ă·ḇōr בְּשָׂדֶ֣ה through any field bə·śā·ḏeh וּבְכֶ֔רֶם or vineyard , ū·ḇə·ḵe·rem וְלֹ֥א [or] wə·lō נִשְׁתֶּ֖ה drink niš·teh מֵ֣י water mê בְאֵ֑ר from any well . ḇə·’êr נֵלֵ֗ךְ We will stay on nê·lêḵ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ the King’s ham·me·leḵ דֶּ֧רֶךְ Highway ; de·reḵ לֹ֤א we will not lō נִטֶּה֙ turn niṭ·ṭeh יָמִ֣ין to the right yā·mîn וּשְׂמֹ֔אול or to the left ū·śə·mō·wl עַ֥ד until ‘aḏ אֲשֶֽׁר־ - ’ă·šer- נַעֲבֹ֖ר we have passed through na·‘ă·ḇōr גְּבוּלֶֽךָ׃ your territory . ” gə·ḇū·le·ḵā Numbers 20:18 אֱד֔וֹם But Edom ’ĕ·ḏō·wm וַיֹּ֤אמֶר answered , way·yō·mer אֵלָיו֙ . . . ’ê·lāw לֹ֥א “ You may not lō פֶּן־ pen- תַעֲבֹ֖ר travel ṯa·‘ă·ḇōr בִּ֑י through our land , bî אֵצֵ֥א or we will come out ’ê·ṣê לִקְרָאתֶֽךָ׃ and confront you liq·rā·ṯe·ḵā בַּחֶ֖רֶב with the sword . ” ba·ḥe·reḇ Numbers 20:19 נַעֲלֶה֒ “ We will stay na·‘ă·leh בַּֽמְסִלָּ֣ה on the main road , ” bam·sil·lāh בְּנֵֽי־ the Israelites bə·nê- יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל . . . yiś·rå̄·ʾēl וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ replied way·yō·mə·rū אֵלָ֥יו - , ’ê·lāw וְאִם־ “ and if wə·’im- אֲנִ֣י we ’ă·nî וּמִקְנַ֔י or our herds ū·miq·nay נִשְׁתֶּה֙ drink niš·teh מֵימֶ֤יךָ your water , mê·me·ḵā וְנָתַתִּ֖י we will pay wə·nā·ṯat·tî מִכְרָ֑ם for it . miḵ·rām אֵין־ There will be no ’ên- דָּבָ֖ר problem ; dā·ḇār רַ֥ק only raq אֶֽעֱבֹֽרָה׃ let us pass through ’e·‘ĕ·ḇō·rāh בְּרַגְלַ֥י on foot . ” bə·raḡ·lay Numbers 20:20 אֱדוֹם֙ But Edom ’ĕ·ḏō·wm וַיֹּ֖אמֶר insisted , way·yō·mer לֹ֣א “ You may not lō תַעֲבֹ֑ר pass through . ” ṯa·‘ă·ḇōr וַיֵּצֵ֤א And they came out way·yê·ṣê לִקְרָאת֔וֹ to confront [the Israelites] liq·rā·ṯōw כָּבֵ֖ד with a large kā·ḇêḏ בְּעַ֥ם army bə·‘am חֲזָקָֽה׃ and a strong ḥă·zā·qāh וּבְיָ֥ד hand . ū·ḇə·yāḏ Numbers 20:21 אֱד֗וֹם So Edom ’ĕ·ḏō·wm וַיְמָאֵ֣ן׀ refused way·mā·’ên נְתֹן֙ to allow nə·ṯōn
