דָנִיֵּאל֙ Daniel , ḏā·nî·yêl דִּֽי־ one dî- מִן־ of min- דִּ֣י - dî יְה֔וּד - yə·hūḏ בְּנֵ֤י the exiles bə·nê גָלוּתָא֙ . . . ḡā·lū·ṯā דִּ֥י - dî אַ֖בִי my father ’a·ḇî מַלְכָּ֥א the king mal·kā הַיְתִ֛י brought hay·ṯî מִן־ from min- יְהֽוּד׃ Judah ? yə·hūḏ Daniel 5:14 וְשִׁמְעֵ֣ת I have heard wə·šim·‘êṯ עֲלַיִךְ . . . ʿă·la·yiḵ דִּ֛י that dî ר֥וּחַ the spirit rū·aḥ אֱלָהִ֖ין of the gods ’ĕ·lā·hîn בָּ֑ךְ is in you , bāḵ וְנַהִיר֧וּ and that you have insight , wə·na·hî·rū וְשָׂכְלְתָנ֛וּ intelligence , wə·śā·ḵə·lə·ṯā·nū יַתִּירָ֖ה and extraordinary yat·tî·rāh הִשְׁתְּכַ֥חַת hiš·tə·ḵa·ḥaṯ בָּֽךְ׃ bāḵ וְחָכְמָ֥ה wisdom . wə·ḥā·ḵə·māh Daniel 5:15 וּכְעַ֞ן Now ū·ḵə·‘an חַכִּֽימַיָּא֙ the wise men ḥak·kî·may·yā אָֽשְׁפַיָּ֔א and enchanters ’ā·šə·p̄ay·yā דִּֽי־ . . . dî- הֻעַ֣לּוּ were brought hu·‘al·lū קָֽדָמַ֗י before me qā·ḏā·may יִקְר֔וֹן to read yiq·rō·wn דְנָה֙ this ḏə·nāh כְתָבָ֤ה inscription ḵə·ṯā·ḇāh וּפִשְׁרֵ֖הּ and interpret it ū·p̄iš·rêh לְהוֹדָעֻתַ֑נִי for me , lə·hō·w·ḏā·‘u·ṯa·nî כָהֲלִ֥ין but they could ḵā·hă·lîn וְלָֽא־ not wə·lā- לְהַחֲוָיָֽה׃ give lə·ha·ḥă·wā·yāh מִלְּתָ֖א its mil·lə·ṯā פְּשַֽׁר־ interpretation . pə·šar- Daniel 5:16 וַאֲנָה֙ But wa·’ă·nāh שִׁמְעֵ֣ת I have heard šim·‘êṯ עֲלַיִךְ about you , ʿă·la·yiḵ דִּֽי־ that dî- תוּכַל you are able ṯū·ḵal פִּשְׁרִ֛ין to give interpretations piš·rîn לְמִפְשַׁ֖ר . . . lə·mip̄·šar לְמִשְׁרֵ֑א and solve lə·miš·rê וְקִטְרִ֣ין difficult problems . wə·qiṭ·rîn כְּעַ֡ן Therefore , kə·‘an הֵן֩ if hên תּוּכַל you can tū·ḵal לְמִקְרֵ֗א read lə·miq·rê כְּתָבָ֜א this inscription kə·ṯā·ḇā לְהוֹדָ֣עֻתַ֔נִי and give me lə·hō·w·ḏā·‘u·ṯa·nî וּפִשְׁרֵהּ֙ its interpretation , ū·p̄iš·rêh תִלְבַּ֗שׁ you will be clothed ṯil·baš אַרְגְּוָנָ֣א in purple ’ar·gə·wā·nā דַהֲבָא֙ and have a gold ḏa·hă·ḇā וְהַמּוֹנְכָא chain wə·ham·mō·nə·ḵå̄ דִֽי־ ḏî- עַֽל־ placed around ‘al- צַוְּארָ֔ךְ your neck , ṣaw·wə·rāḵ וְתַלְתָּ֥א and you will be made the third wə·ṯal·tā תִּשְׁלַֽט׃פ highest ruler tiš·laṭ בְמַלְכוּתָ֖א in the kingdom . ” ḇə·mal·ḵū·ṯā Daniel 5:17 בֵּאדַ֜יִן In response , bê·ḏa·yin דָנִיֵּ֗אל Daniel ḏā·nî·yêl וְאָמַר֙ said wə·’ā·mar קֳדָ֣ם . . . qo·ḏām עָנֵ֣ה . . . ‘ā·nêh מַלְכָּ֔א to the king , mal·kā לֶֽהֶוְיָ֔ן “ You may keep le·hew·yān מַתְּנָתָךְ֙ your gifts mat·tə·nā·ṯāḵ לָ֣ךְ for yourself lāḵ הַ֑ב and give haḇ וּנְבָ֥זְבְּיָתָ֖ךְ your rewards ū·nə·ḇā·zə·bə·yā·ṯāḵ לְאָחֳרָ֣ן to someone else . lə·’ā·ḥo·rān בְּרַ֗ם Nevertheless , bə·ram אֶקְרֵ֣א I will read ’eq·rê כְּתָבָא֙ the inscription kə·ṯā·ḇā לְמַלְכָּ֔א for the king lə·mal·kā וּפִשְׁרָ֖א and interpret it ū·p̄iš·rā אֲהוֹדְעִנֵּֽהּ׃ for him . ’ă·hō·wḏ·‘in·nêh
