לָעָ֑ם for the people , lā·‘ām וַיֹּ֗אמֶר he asked , way·yō·mer מָֽה־ “ What māh- הַזֶּה֙ is this haz·zeh אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ’ă·šer הַדָּבָ֤ר - had·dā·ḇār אַתָּ֤ה you are ’at·tāh עֹשֶׂה֙ doing ‘ō·śeh לָעָ֔ם for the people ? lā·‘ām מַדּ֗וּעַ Why mad·dū·a‘ אַתָּ֤ה do you ’at·tāh יוֹשֵׁב֙ sit yō·wō·šêḇ לְבַדֶּ֔ךָ alone [as judge] , lə·ḇad·de·ḵā וְכָל־ with all wə·ḵāl הָעָ֛ם the people hā·‘ām נִצָּ֥ב standing niṣ·ṣāḇ עָלֶ֖יךָ around ‘ā·le·ḵā מִן־ you from min- בֹּ֥קֶר morning bō·qer עַד־ till ‘aḏ- עָֽרֶב׃ evening ? ” ‘ā·reḇ Exodus 18:15 כִּֽי־ “ Because kî- הָעָ֖ם the people hā·‘ām יָבֹ֥א come yā·ḇō אֵלַ֛י to me ’ê·lay לִדְרֹ֥שׁ to inquire liḏ·rōš אֱלֹהִֽים׃ of God , ” ’ĕ·lō·hîm מֹשֶׁ֖ה Moses mō·šeh וַיֹּ֥אמֶר replied way·yō·mer לְחֹתְנ֑וֹ - . lə·ḥō·ṯə·nōw Exodus 18:16 כִּֽי־ “ Whenever kî- יִהְיֶ֨ה they have yih·yeh לָהֶ֤ם . . . lā·hem דָּבָר֙ a dispute , dā·ḇār בָּ֣א it is brought bā אֵלַ֔י to me ’ê·lay וְשָׁ֣פַטְתִּ֔י to judge wə·šā·p̄aṭ·tî בֵּ֥ין between bên אִ֖ישׁ one man ’îš וּבֵ֣ין . . . ū·ḇên רֵעֵ֑הוּ and another , rê·‘ê·hū וְהוֹדַעְתִּ֛י and I make known wə·hō·w·ḏa‘·tî אֶת־ to them ’eṯ- חֻקֵּ֥י the statutes ḥuq·qê וְאֶת־ and wə·’eṯ- תּוֹרֹתָֽיו׃ laws tō·w·rō·ṯāw הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים of God . ” hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm Exodus 18:17 מֹשֶׁ֖ה But Moses’ mō·šeh חֹתֵ֥ן father-in-law ḥō·ṯên וַיֹּ֛אמֶר said way·yō·mer אֵלָ֑יו to him , ’ê·lāw הַדָּבָ֔ר “ What had·dā·ḇār אֲשֶׁ֥ר - ’ă·šer אַתָּ֖ה you are ’at·tāh עֹשֶֽׂה׃ doing ‘ō·śeh לֹא־ is not lō- טוֹב֙ good . ṭō·wḇ Exodus 18:18 גַּם־ Surely gam- אַתָּ֕ה you ’at·tāh גַּם־ and gam- הַזֶּ֖ה these haz·zeh הָעָ֥ם people hā·‘ām אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer עִמָּ֑ךְ with you ‘im·māḵ נָבֹ֣ל will wear yourselves out nā·ḇōl תִּבֹּ֔ל . . . , tib·bōl כִּֽי־ because kî- הַדָּבָ֔ר the task had·dā·ḇār כָבֵ֤ד is too heavy ḵā·ḇêḏ מִמְּךָ֙ for you . mim·mə·ḵā לֹא־ You cannot lō- תוּכַ֥ל . . . ṯū·ḵal עֲשֹׂ֖הוּ handle ‘ă·śō·hū לְבַדֶּֽךָ׃ it alone . lə·ḇad·de·ḵā Exodus 18:19 עַתָּ֞ה Now ‘at·tāh שְׁמַ֤ע listen to me ; šə·ma‘ בְּקֹלִי֙ . . . bə·qō·lî אִיעָ֣צְךָ֔ I will give you some advice , ’î·‘ā·ṣə·ḵā אֱלֹהִ֖ים and may God ’ĕ·lō·hîm וִיהִ֥י be wî·hî עִמָּ֑ךְ with you . ‘im·māḵ אַתָּ֣ה You ’at·tāh הֱיֵ֧ה must be hĕ·yêh לָעָ֗ם the people’s representative lā·‘ām מ֚וּל before mūl
