וְֽאֵינֶ֨נּוּ nothing wə·’ê·nen·nū לְנַפְשׁ֣וֹ׀ his heart lə·nap̄·šōw מִכֹּ֣ל - mik·kōl אֲשֶׁר־ - ’ă·šer- יִתְאַוֶּ֗ה desires ; yiṯ·’aw·weh הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ but God hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm וְלֹֽא־ does not wə·lō- יַשְׁלִיטֶ֤נּוּ allow him yaš·lî·ṭen·nū לֶאֱכֹ֣ל to enjoy them le·’ĕ·ḵōl מִמֶּ֔נּוּ - . mim·men·nū כִּ֛י Instead , kî אִ֥ישׁ a stranger ’îš נָכְרִ֖י . . . nā·ḵə·rî יֹֽאכֲלֶ֑נּוּ will enjoy them . yō·ḵă·len·nū זֶ֥ה This zeh הֶ֛בֶל is futile he·ḇel וָחֳלִ֥י and a grievous wā·ḥo·lî רָ֖ע affliction . rā‘ הֽוּא׃ . . . hū Ecclesiastes 6:3 אִם־ - ’im- אִ֣ישׁ A man ’îš יוֹלִ֣יד may father yō·w·lîḏ מֵאָ֡ה a hundred [children] mê·’āh יִֽחְיֶ֜ה and live yiḥ·yeh רַבּ֨וֹת for many rab·bō·wṯ וְשָׁנִים֩ years ; wə·šā·nîm וְרַ֣ב׀ yet no matter how long wə·raḇ שֶׁיִּהְי֣וּ - še·yih·yū יְמֵֽי־ he lives yə·mê- שָׁנָ֗יו . . . , šā·nāw וְנַפְשׁוֹ֙ if he wə·nap̄·šōw לֹא־ vvv lō- תִשְׂבַּ֣ע is unsatisfied ṯiś·ba‘ מִן־ with min- הַטּוֹבָ֔ה his prosperity haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh לֹא־ and does not lō- הָ֣יְתָה . . . hā·yə·ṯāh לּ֑וֹ lōw וְגַם־ even wə·ḡam- קְבוּרָ֖ה receive a proper burial , qə·ḇū·rāh אָמַ֕רְתִּי I say ’ā·mar·tî הַנָּֽפֶל׃ that a stillborn child han·nā·p̄el ט֥וֹב is better off ṭō·wḇ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ than he . mim·men·nū Ecclesiastes 6:4 כִּֽי־ For kî- בָּ֖א [a stillborn child] enters bā בַהֶ֥בֶל in futility ḇa·he·ḇel יֵלֵ֑ךְ and departs yê·lêḵ וּבַחֹ֣שֶׁךְ in darkness , ū·ḇa·ḥō·šeḵ שְׁמ֥וֹ and his name šə·mōw יְכֻסֶּֽה׃ is shrouded yə·ḵus·seh וּבַחֹ֖שֶׁךְ in obscurity . ū·ḇa·ḥō·šeḵ Ecclesiastes 6:5 לָזֶ֖ה [The child] , lā·zeh גַּם־ though gam- לֹא־ neither lō- רָאָ֖ה seeing rā·’āh שֶׁ֥מֶשׁ the sun še·meš וְלֹ֣א nor wə·lō יָדָ֑ע knowing anything , yā·ḏā‘ נַ֥חַת has more rest na·ḥaṯ מִזֶּֽה׃ than [that man] , miz·zeh Ecclesiastes 6:6 וְאִלּ֣וּ even if wə·’il·lū חָיָ֗ה he lives ḥā·yāh אֶ֤לֶף a thousand ’e·lep̄ שָׁנִים֙ years šā·nîm פַּעֲמַ֔יִם twice over pa·‘ă·ma·yim לֹ֣א but fails to lō רָאָ֑ה enjoy rā·’āh וְטוֹבָ֖ה his prosperity . wə·ṭō·w·ḇāh הֲלֹ֛א Do not hă·lō הַכֹּ֥ל all hak·kōl הוֹלֵֽךְ׃ go hō·w·lêḵ אֶל־ to ’el- אֶחָ֖ד the same ’e·ḥāḏ מָק֥וֹם place ? mā·qō·wm Ecclesiastes 6:7 כָּל־ All kāl- הָאָדָ֖ם a man’s hā·’ā·ḏām עֲמַ֥ל labor ‘ă·mal לְפִ֑יהוּ [is] for his mouth , lə·p̄î·hū וְגַם־ yet wə·ḡam- הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ his appetite han·ne·p̄eš לֹ֥א is never lō תִמָּלֵֽא׃ satisfied . ṯim·mā·lê
