הָֽבֶל׃ is futile . hā·ḇel Ecclesiastes 2:20 אֲנִ֖י So ’ă·nî לִבִּ֑י my heart lib·bî וְסַבּ֥וֹתִֽי began wə·sab·bō·w·ṯî לְיַאֵ֣שׁ to despair lə·ya·’êš אֶת־ - ’eṯ- עַ֚ל over ‘al כָּל־ all kāl- הֶ֣עָמָ֔ל the labor he·‘ā·māl שֶׁעָמַ֖לְתִּי that I had done še·‘ā·mal·tî תַּ֥חַת under ta·ḥaṯ הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ the sun . haš·šā·meš Ecclesiastes 2:21 כִּי־ When kî- יֵ֣שׁ there is yêš אָדָ֗ם a man ’ā·ḏām שֶׁעֲמָל֛וֹ who has labored še·‘ă·mā·lōw בְּחָכְמָ֥ה with wisdom , bə·ḥā·ḵə·māh וּבְדַ֖עַת knowledge , ū·ḇə·ḏa·‘aṯ וּבְכִשְׁר֑וֹן and skill , ū·ḇə·ḵiš·rō·wn יִתְּנֶ֣נּוּ and he must give yit·tə·nen·nū חֶלְק֔וֹ his portion ḥel·qōw וּלְאָדָ֞ם to a man ū·lə·’ā·ḏām שֶׁלֹּ֤א who has not šel·lō עָֽמַל־ worked ‘ā·mal- בּוֹ֙ for it , bōw זֶ֥ה this zeh גַּם־ too gam- הֶ֖בֶל is futile he·ḇel רַבָּֽה׃ and a great rab·bāh וְרָעָ֥ה evil . wə·rā·‘āh Ecclesiastes 2:22 כִּ֠י For kî מֶֽה־ what meh- לָֽאָדָם֙ does a man lā·’ā·ḏām הֹוֶ֤ה get hō·weh בְּכָל־ for all bə·ḵāl עֲמָל֔וֹ the toil ‘ă·mā·lōw לִבּ֑וֹ - lib·bō וּבְרַעְי֖וֹן and striving ū·ḇə·ra‘·yō·wn שֶׁה֥וּא with which še·hū עָמֵ֖ל he labors ‘ā·mêl תַּ֥חַת under ta·ḥaṯ הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ the sun ? haš·šā·meš Ecclesiastes 2:23 כִּ֧י Indeed , kî כָל־ all ḵāl יָמָ֣יו his days yā·māw מַכְאֹבִ֗ים are filled with grief , maḵ·’ō·ḇîm עִנְיָנ֔וֹ and his task ‘in·yā·nōw וָכַ֙עַס֙ is sorrowful ; wā·ḵa·‘as גַּם־ even gam- בַּלַּ֖יְלָה at night , bal·lay·lāh לִבּ֑וֹ his mind lib·bōw לֹא־ does not lō- שָׁכַ֣ב rest . šā·ḵaḇ זֶ֖ה This zeh גַּם־ too gam- הֶ֥בֶל is futile he·ḇel הֽוּא׃ . . . . hū Ecclesiastes 2:24 אֵֽין־ Nothing ’ên- ט֤וֹב [is] better ṭō·wḇ בָּאָדָם֙ for a man bā·’ā·ḏām שֶׁיֹּאכַ֣ל than to eat še·yō·ḵal וְשָׁתָ֔ה and drink wə·šā·ṯāh וְהֶרְאָ֧ה and enjoy wə·her·’āh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- נַפְשׁ֛וֹ - nap̄·šōw ט֖וֹב . . . ṭō·wḇ בַּעֲמָל֑וֹ his work . ba·‘ă·mā·lōw אָ֔נִי I ’ā·nî גַּם־ have also gam- רָאִ֣יתִי seen rā·’î·ṯî כִּ֛י that kî זֹה֙ this zōh הִֽיא׃ [is] hî מִיַּ֥ד from the hand mî·yaḏ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים of God . hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm Ecclesiastes 2:25 כִּ֣י For kî ח֥וּץ apart from ḥūṣ מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ Him , mim·men·nî מִ֥י who mî יֹאכַ֛ל can eat yō·ḵal וּמִ֥י and who ū·mî יָח֖וּשׁ can find enjoyment ? yā·ḥūš
