גַם־ also ḡam- וְיָדַ֣עְתִּי came to realize wə·yā·ḏa‘·tî אֶחָ֖ד that one ’e·ḥāḏ שֶׁמִּקְרֶ֥ה fate šem·miq·reh יִקְרֶ֥ה overcomes yiq·reh אֶת־ them ’eṯ- כֻּלָּֽם׃ both . kul·lām Ecclesiastes 2:15 אֲנִ֜י So I ’ă·nî וְאָמַ֨רְתִּֽי said wə·’ā·mar·tî בְּלִבִּ֗י to myself , bə·lib·bî כְּמִקְרֵ֤ה “ The fate kə·miq·rêh הַכְּסִיל֙ of the fool hak·kə·sîl גַּם־ will also gam- יִקְרֵ֔נִי befall yiq·rê·nî אֲנִ֣י me . ’ă·nî וְלָ֧מָּה What wə·lām·māh אָ֣ז then ’āz אֲנִ֖י have I ’ă·nî יוֹתֵ֑ר gained yō·w·ṯêr חָכַ֛מְתִּי by being wise ? ” ḥā·ḵam·tî וְדִבַּ֣רְתִּי And I said wə·ḏib·bar·tî בְלִבִּ֔י to myself ḇə·lib·bî זֶ֖ה that this zeh שֶׁגַּם־ too šeg·gam- הָֽבֶל׃ is futile . hā·ḇel Ecclesiastes 2:16 כִּי֩ For kî אֵ֨ין there is no ’ên לְעוֹלָ֑ם lasting lə·‘ō·w·lām זִכְר֧וֹן remembrance ziḵ·rō·wn לֶחָכָ֛ם of the wise , le·ḥā·ḵām עִֽם־ just as with ‘im- הַכְּסִ֖יל the fool , hak·kə·sîl בְּשֶׁכְּבָ֞ר seeing that bə·šek·kə·ḇār הַכֹּ֣ל both hak·kōl נִשְׁכָּ֔ח will be forgotten niš·kāḥ הַיָּמִ֤ים in the days hay·yā·mîm הַבָּאִים֙ to come . hab·bā·’îm וְאֵ֛יךְ Alas , wə·’êḵ הֶחָכָ֖ם the wise man he·ḥā·ḵām יָמ֥וּת will die yā·mūṯ עִֽם־ just like ‘im- הַכְּסִֽיל׃ the fool ! hak·kə·sîl Ecclesiastes 2:17 וְשָׂנֵ֙אתִי֙ So I hated wə·śā·nê·ṯî אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים life , ha·ḥay·yîm כִּ֣י because kî הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה the work ham·ma·‘ă·śeh שֶׁנַּעֲשָׂ֖ה that is done šen·na·‘ă·śāh תַּ֣חַת under ta·ḥaṯ הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ the sun haš·šā·meš רַ֤ע was grievous ra‘ עָלַי֙ to me . ‘ā·lay כִּֽי־ For kî- הַכֹּ֥ל everything hak·kōl הֶ֖בֶל is futile he·ḇel וּרְע֥וּת and a pursuit ū·rə·‘ūṯ רֽוּחַ׃ of the wind . rū·aḥ Ecclesiastes 2:18 אֲנִי֙ I ’ă·nî אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וְשָׂנֵ֤אתִֽי hated wə·śā·nê·ṯî כָּל־ all kāl- שֶׁאֲנִ֥י for which še·’ă·nî עֲמָלִ֔י I had toiled ‘ă·mā·lî עָמֵ֖ל . . . ‘ā·mêl תַּ֣חַת under ta·ḥaṯ הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ the sun , haš·šā·meš שֶׁ֣אַנִּיחֶ֔נּוּ because I must leave it še·’an·nî·ḥen·nū לָאָדָ֖ם to the man lā·’ā·ḏām שֶׁיִּהְיֶ֥ה who comes še·yih·yeh אַחֲרָֽי׃ after me . ’a·ḥă·rāy Ecclesiastes 2:19 וּמִ֣י And who ū·mî יוֹדֵ֗עַ knows yō·w·ḏê·a‘ יִהְיֶה֙ whether [that man] will be yih·yeh הֶֽחָכָ֤ם wise he·ḥā·ḵām א֣וֹ or ’ōw סָכָ֔ל foolish ? sā·ḵāl וְיִשְׁלַט֙ Yet he will take wə·yiš·laṭ בְּכָל־ over all bə·ḵāl עֲמָלִ֔י the labor ‘ă·mā·lî שֶֽׁעָמַ֥לְתִּי at which I have worked še·‘ā·mal·tî וְשֶׁחָכַ֖מְתִּי skillfully wə·še·ḥā·ḵam·tî תַּ֣חַת under ta·ḥaṯ הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ the sun . haš·šā·meš זֶ֖ה This zeh גַּם־ too gam-
