פָּנֶ֣יךָ your face pā·ne·ḵā רָעִ֗ים sad , rā·‘îm וְאַתָּה֙ though you [are] wə·’at·tāh אֵֽינְךָ֣ not ’ê·nə·ḵā חוֹלֶ֔ה ill ? ḥō·w·leh זֶ֔ה This zeh אֵ֣ין could only be ’ên כִּי־ . . . kî- אִ֖ם . . . ’im רֹ֣עַֽ sadness rō·a‘ לֵ֑ב of the heart . ” lêḇ וָאִירָ֖א I was overwhelmed with fear wā·’î·rā הַרְבֵּ֥ה . . . har·bêh מְאֹֽד׃ . . . mə·’ōḏ Nehemiah 2:3 וָאֹמַ֣ר and replied wā·’ō·mar לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ to the king , lam·me·leḵ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ “ May the king ham·me·leḵ יִחְיֶ֑ה live forever yiḥ·yeh לְעוֹלָ֣ם . . . ! lə·‘ō·w·lām מַדּ֜וּעַ Why mad·dū·a‘ לֹא־ should I not lō- יֵרְע֣וּ be sad yê·rə·‘ū פָנַ֗י . . . p̄ā·nay אֲשֶׁ֨ר when ’ă·šer הָעִ֜יר the city hā·‘îr בֵּית־ where bêṯ- אֲבֹתַי֙ my fathers ’ă·ḇō·ṯay קִבְר֤וֹת are buried qiḇ·rō·wṯ חֲרֵבָ֔ה lies in ruins , ḥă·rê·ḇāh וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ and its gates ū·šə·‘ā·re·hā אֻכְּל֥וּ have been destroyed ’uk·kə·lū בָאֵֽשׁ׃ס by fire ? ” ḇā·’êš Nehemiah 2:4 מַה־ “ What mah- זֶּ֖ה . . . zeh אַתָּ֣ה is your ’at·tāh מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ request ? ” mə·ḇaq·qêš וַיֹּ֤אמֶר replied way·yō·mer לִי֙ - lî הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king . ham·me·leḵ עַל־ . . . ‘al- וָֽאֶתְפַּלֵּ֔ל So I prayed wā·’eṯ·pal·lêl אֶל־ to ’el- אֱלֹהֵ֖י the God ’ĕ·lō·hê הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ of heaven haš·šā·mā·yim Nehemiah 2:5 וָאֹמַ֣ר and answered wā·’ō·mar לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king , lam·me·leḵ אִם־ “ If ’im- עַל־ ‘al- ט֔וֹב it pleases ṭō·wḇ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ the king , ham·me·leḵ וְאִם־ and if wə·’im- עַבְדְּךָ֖ your servant ‘aḇ·də·ḵā יִיטַ֥ב has found favor yî·ṭaḇ לְפָנֶ֑יךָ in your sight , lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā אֲשֶׁ֧ר I ask that ’ă·šer תִּשְׁלָחֵ֣נִי you send me tiš·lā·ḥê·nî אֶל־ to ’el- יְהוּדָ֗ה Judah , yə·hū·ḏāh אֶל־ to ’el- עִ֛יר the city ‘îr אֲבֹתַ֖י where my fathers ’ă·ḇō·ṯay קִבְר֥וֹת are buried , qiḇ·rō·wṯ וְאֶבְנֶֽנָּה׃ so that I may rebuild it . ” wə·’eḇ·nen·nāh Nehemiah 2:6 הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ Then the king , ham·me·leḵ וְהַשֵּׁגַ֣ל׀ with the queen wə·haš·šê·ḡal יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת seated yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ אֶצְל֗וֹ beside him , ’eṣ·lōw וַיֹּאמֶר֩ asked way·yō·mer לִ֨י me , lî עַד־ “ How long ‘aḏ- מָתַ֛י . . . mā·ṯay מַֽהֲלָכֲךָ֖ will your journey ma·hă·lā·ḵă·ḵā יִהְיֶ֥ה take , yih·yeh וּמָתַ֣י and when ū·mā·ṯay תָּשׁ֑וּב will you return ? ” tā·šūḇ וַיִּיטַ֤ב So it pleased way·yî·ṭaḇ לִפְנֵֽי־ . . . lip̄·nê- הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king ham·me·leḵ וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֔נִי to send me , way·yiš·lā·ḥê·nî וָֽאֶתְּנָ֥ה and I set wā·’et·tə·nāh ל֖וֹ lōw זְמָֽן׃ a time . zə·mān Nehemiah 2:7 וָאוֹמַר֮ I also said wā·’ō·w·mar לַמֶּלֶךְ֒ to [him] , lam·me·leḵ אִם־ “ If ’im-
