וְהַקּ֥וֹל And the sound wə·haq·qō·wl נִשְׁמַ֖ע was heard niš·ma‘ עַד־ from ‘aḏ- לְמֵרָחֽוֹק׃פ afar . lə·mê·rā·ḥō·wq Ezra 4:1 צָרֵ֥י When the enemies ṣā·rê יְהוּדָ֖ה of Judah yə·hū·ḏāh וּבִנְיָמִ֑ן and Benjamin ū·ḇin·yā·min וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֔וּ heard way·yiš·mə·‘ū כִּֽי־ that kî- בְנֵ֤י the exiles ḇə·nê הַגּוֹלָה֙ . . . hag·gō·w·lāh בּוֹנִ֣ים were building bō·w·nîm הֵיכָ֔ל a temple hê·ḵāl לַיהוָ֖ה for YHWH , Yah·weh אֱלֹהֵ֥י the God ’ĕ·lō·hê יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel , yiś·rā·’êl Ezra 4:2 וַיִּגְּשׁ֨וּ they approached way·yig·gə·šū אֶל־ . . . ’el- זְרֻבָּבֶ֜ל Zerubbabel zə·rub·bā·ḇel וְאֶל־ . . . wə·’el- רָאשֵׁ֣י and the heads rā·šê הָֽאָב֗וֹת of the families , hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ saying way·yō·mə·rū לָהֶם֙ . . . , lā·hem נִבְנֶ֣ה “ Let us build niḇ·neh עִמָּכֶ֔ם with you ‘im·mā·ḵem כִּ֣י because , kî כָכֶ֔ם like you , ḵā·ḵem נִדְר֖וֹשׁ we seek niḏ·rō·wōš לֵֽאלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם your God lê·lō·hê·ḵem אֲנַ֣חְנוּ . . . ’ă·naḥ·nū זֹבְחִ֗ים and have been sacrificing zō·ḇə·ḥîm וְלֹא to Him since wə·lō מִימֵי֙ the time mî·mê מֶ֣לֶךְ of King me·leḵ אֵסַ֤ר ’ê·sar חַדֹּן֙ Esar-haddon ḥad·dōn אַשּׁ֔וּר of Assyria , ’aš·šūr הַמַּעֲלֶ֥ה who brought ham·ma·‘ă·leh אֹתָ֖נוּ us ’ō·ṯā·nū פֹּֽה׃ here . ” pōh Ezra 4:3 זְרֻבָּבֶ֜ל But Zerubbabel , zə·rub·bā·ḇel וְיֵשׁ֗וּעַ Jeshua , wə·yê·šū·a‘ וּשְׁאָ֨ר and the other ū·šə·’ār רָאשֵׁ֤י heads rā·šê הָֽאָבוֹת֙ of the families hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel lə·yiś·rā·’êl וַיֹּאמֶר֩ replied way·yō·mer לָהֶ֨ם - , lā·hem לֹֽא־ “ You have no lō- לָ֣כֶם part lā·ḵem וָלָ֔נוּ with us wā·lā·nū לִבְנ֥וֹת in building liḇ·nō·wṯ בַּ֖יִת a house ba·yiṯ לֵאלֹהֵ֑ינוּ for our God , lê·lō·hê·nū כִּי֩ since kî אֲנַ֨חְנוּ we ’ă·naḥ·nū יַ֜חַד alone ya·ḥaḏ נִבְנֶ֗ה must build niḇ·neh לַֽיהוָה֙ it for YHWH , Yah·weh אֱלֹהֵ֣י the God ’ĕ·lō·hê יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel , yiś·rā·’êl כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר as ka·’ă·šer הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ - ham·me·leḵ כּ֥וֹרֶשׁ Cyrus kō·w·reš מֶֽלֶךְ־ king me·leḵ- פָּרָֽס׃ of Persia pā·rās צִוָּ֔נוּ has commanded us . ” ṣiw·wā·nū Ezra 4:4 וַיְהִי֙ Then way·hî עַם־ the people ‘am- הָאָ֔רֶץ of the land hā·’ā·reṣ מְרַפִּ֖ים set out to discourage mə·rap·pîm יְדֵ֣י . . . yə·ḏê עַם־ the people ‘am- יְהוּדָ֑ה of Judah yə·hū·ḏāh וּמְבַלַהִים and make them afraid ū·mə·ḇa·la·hīm אוֹתָ֖ם - ’ō·w·ṯām לִבְנֽוֹת׃ to build . liḇ·nō·wṯ Ezra 4:5 וְסֹכְרִ֧ים They hired wə·sō·ḵə·rîm יוֹעֲצִ֖ים counselors yō·w·‘ă·ṣîm עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם against them ‘ă·lê·hem לְהָפֵ֣ר to frustrate lə·hā·p̄êr עֲצָתָ֑ם their plans ‘ă·ṣā·ṯām כָּל־ throughout kāl- יְמֵ֗י the reign yə·mê
