Genesis 38:5 וַתֵּ֣לֶד Then she gave birth to wat·tê·leḏ וַתֹּ֤סֶף another wat·tō·sep̄ עוֹד֙ . . . ‘ō·wḏ בֵּ֔ן son bên וַתִּקְרָ֥א and named wat·tiq·rā אֶת־ - ’eṯ- שְׁמ֖וֹ him šə·mōw שֵׁלָ֑ה Shelah ; šê·lāh וְהָיָ֥ה it was wə·hā·yāh בִכְזִ֖יב at Chezib ḇiḵ·zîḇ בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ that she gave birth to him bə·liḏ·tāh אֹתֽוֹ׃ - . ’ō·ṯōw Genesis 38:6 יְהוּדָ֛ה Now Judah yə·hū·ḏāh וַיִּקַּ֧ח acquired way·yiq·qaḥ אִשָּׁ֖ה a wife ’iš·šāh לְעֵ֣ר for Er , lə·‘êr בְּכוֹר֑וֹ his firstborn , bə·ḵō·w·rōw וּשְׁמָ֖הּ and her name ū·šə·māh תָּמָֽר׃ was Tamar . tā·mār Genesis 38:7 וַיְהִ֗י But way·hî עֵ֚ר Er , ‘êr יְהוּדָ֔ה Judah’s yə·hū·ḏāh בְּכ֣וֹר firstborn , bə·ḵō·wr רַ֖ע was wicked ra‘ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight bə·‘ê·nê יְהוָ֑ה of YHWH ; Yah·weh יְהוָֽה׃ so YHWH Yah·weh וַיְמִתֵ֖הוּ put him to death . way·mi·ṯê·hū Genesis 38:8 יְהוּדָה֙ Then Judah yə·hū·ḏāh וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said way·yō·mer לְאוֹנָ֔ן to Onan , lə·’ō·w·nān בֹּ֛א “ Sleep with bō אֶל־ . . . ’el- אָחִ֖יךָ your brother’s ’ā·ḥî·ḵā אֵ֥שֶׁת wife . ’ê·šeṯ וְיַבֵּ֣ם Perform your duty as her brother-in-law wə·yab·bêm אֹתָ֑הּ - ’ō·ṯāh וְהָקֵ֥ם and raise up wə·hā·qêm זֶ֖רַע offspring ze·ra‘ לְאָחִֽיךָ׃ for your brother . ” lə·’ā·ḥî·ḵā Genesis 38:9 אוֹנָ֔ן But Onan ’ō·w·nān וַיֵּ֣דַע knew way·yê·ḏa‘ כִּ֛י that kî הַזָּ֑רַע the offspring haz·zā·ra‘ וְהָיָ֞ה . . . wə·hā·yāh לֹּ֥א would not lō יִהְיֶ֣ה belong yih·yeh ל֖וֹ to him ; lōw אִם־ so whenever ’im- בָּ֨א he would sleep with bā אֶל־ . . . ’el- אָחִיו֙ his brother’s ’ā·ḥîw אֵ֤שֶׁת wife , ’ê·šeṯ וְשִׁחֵ֣ת he would spill his seed wə·ši·ḥêṯ אַ֔רְצָה on the ground ’ar·ṣāh לְבִלְתִּ֥י so that he would not lə·ḇil·tî נְתָן־ produce nə·ṯān- זֶ֖רַע offspring ze·ra‘ לְאָחִֽיו׃ for his brother . lə·’ā·ḥîw Genesis 38:10 אֲשֶׁ֣ר What ’ă·šer עָשָׂ֑ה he did ‘ā·śāh וַיֵּ֛רַע was wicked way·yê·ra‘ בְּעֵינֵ֥י in the sight bə·‘ê·nê יְהוָ֖ה of YHWH , Yah·weh וַיָּ֖מֶת so He put [Onan] to death way·yā·meṯ גַּם־ as well gam- אֹתֽוֹ׃ - . ’ō·ṯōw Genesis 38:11 יְהוּדָה֩ Then Judah yə·hū·ḏāh וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said way·yō·mer כַּלָּת֜וֹ to his daughter-in-law kal·lā·ṯōw לְתָמָ֨ר Tamar , lə·ṯā·mār שְׁבִ֧י “ Live šə·ḇî אַלְמָנָ֣ה as a widow ’al·mā·nāh אָבִ֗יךְ in your father’s ’ā·ḇîḵ בֵית־ house ḇêṯ- עַד־ until ‘aḏ- בְנִ֔י my son ḇə·nî שֵׁלָ֣ה Shelah šê·lāh יִגְדַּל֙ grows up . ” yiḡ·dal כִּ֣י For kî אָמַ֔ר he thought , ’ā·mar
