אֶחָֽיו׃ And they ’e·ḥāw וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֖וּ agreed . way·yiš·mə·‘ū Genesis 37:28 מִדְיָנִ֜ים So when the Midianite miḏ·yā·nîm סֹֽחֲרִ֗ים traders sō·ḥă·rîm וַיַּֽעַבְרוּ֩ passed by , way·ya·‘aḇ·rū אֲנָשִׁ֨ים . . . ’ă·nā·šîm וַֽיִּמְשְׁכוּ֙ his brothers pulled way·yim·šə·ḵū וַיַּֽעֲל֤וּ . . . way·ya·‘ă·lū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יוֹסֵף֙ Joseph yō·w·sêp̄ מִן־ out of min- הַבּ֔וֹר the pit hab·bō·wr וַיִּמְכְּר֧וּ and sold way·yim·kə·rū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יוֹסֵ֛ף him yō·w·sêp̄ בְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים for twenty [shekels] bə·‘eś·rîm כָּ֑סֶף of silver kā·sep̄ לַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֖ים to the Ishmaelites , lay·yiš·mə·‘ê·lîm וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ who took way·yā·ḇî·’ū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יוֹסֵ֖ף [him] yō·w·sêp̄ מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ to Egypt . miṣ·rā·yə·māh Genesis 37:29 רְאוּבֵן֙ When Reuben rə·’ū·ḇên וַיָּ֤שָׁב returned way·yā·šāḇ אֶל־ to ’el- הַבּ֔וֹר the pit hab·bō·wr וְהִנֵּ֥ה and saw wə·hin·nêh יוֹסֵ֖ף that Joseph yō·w·sêp̄ אֵין־ was not there ’ên- בַּבּ֑וֹר . . . , bab·bō·wr וַיִּקְרַ֖ע he tore way·yiq·ra‘ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- בְּגָדָֽיו׃ his clothes , bə·ḡā·ḏāw Genesis 37:30 וַיָּ֥שָׁב returned way·yā·šāḇ אֶל־ to ’el- אֶחָ֖יו his brothers , ’e·ḥāw וַיֹּאמַ֑ר and said , way·yō·mar הַיֶּ֣לֶד “ The boy hay·ye·leḏ אֵינֶ֔נּוּ is gone ! ’ê·nen·nū וַאֲנִ֖י What am I going to do wa·’ă·nî אָ֥נָה . . . ’ā·nāh אֲנִי־ . . . ’ă·nî- בָֽא׃ . . . ? ” ḇā Genesis 37:31 וַיִּקְח֖וּ Then they took way·yiq·ḥū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יוֹסֵ֑ף Joseph’s yō·w·sêp̄ כְּתֹ֣נֶת robe , kə·ṯō·neṯ וַֽיִּשְׁחֲטוּ֙ slaughtered way·yiš·ḥă·ṭū שְׂעִ֣יר a young goat śə·‘îr עִזִּ֔ים . . . , ‘iz·zîm וַיִּטְבְּל֥וּ and dipped way·yiṭ·bə·lū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַכֻּתֹּ֖נֶת the robe hak·kut·tō·neṯ בַּדָּֽם׃ in its blood . bad·dām Genesis 37:32 וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֞וּ They sent way·šal·lə·ḥū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- כְּתֹ֣נֶת the robe kə·ṯō·neṯ הַפַּסִּ֗ים of many colors hap·pas·sîm וַיָּבִ֙יאוּ֙ . . . way·yā·ḇî·’ū אֶל־ to ’el- אֲבִיהֶ֔ם their father ’ă·ḇî·hem וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ and said , way·yō·mə·rū מָצָ֑אנוּ “ We found mā·ṣā·nū זֹ֣את this . zōṯ הַכֶּר־ Examine it hak·ker- נָ֗א to see whether nā הִ֖וא it [is] hî בִּנְךָ֛ your son’s bin·ḵā הַכְּתֹ֧נֶת robe hak·kə·ṯō·neṯ אִם־ or ’im- לֹֽא׃ not . ” lō Genesis 37:33 וַיַּכִּירָ֤הּ His father recognized it way·yak·kî·rāh וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ and said , way·yō·mer בְּנִ֔י “ It is my son’s bə·nî כְּתֹ֣נֶת robe ! kə·ṯō·neṯ רָעָ֖ה A vicious rā·‘āh חַיָּ֥ה animal ḥay·yāh אֲכָלָ֑תְהוּ has devoured him . ’ă·ḵā·lā·ṯə·hū יוֹסֵֽף׃ Joseph yō·w·sêp̄ טָרֹ֥ף has surely been torn to pieces ṭā·rōp̄ טֹרַ֖ף . . . ! ” ṭō·rap̄
