בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה in the field baś·śā·ḏeh וַיִּשְׁאָלֵ֧הוּ and asked , way·yiš·’ā·lê·hū הָאִ֛ישׁ . . . hā·’îš לֵאמֹ֖ר . . . lê·mōr מַה־ “ What mah- תְּבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ are you looking for ? ” tə·ḇaq·qêš Genesis 37:16 אָנֹכִ֣י “ I am ’ā·nō·ḵî מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ looking for mə·ḇaq·qêš אַחַ֖י my brothers , ” ’a·ḥay וַיֹּ֕אמֶר Joseph replied . way·yō·mer אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַגִּֽידָה־ “ Can you please tell hag·gî·ḏāh- נָּ֣א . . . nā לִ֔י me lî אֵיפֹ֖ה where ’ê·p̄ōh הֵ֥ם they hêm רֹעִֽים׃ are pasturing their flocks? ” rō·‘îm Genesis 37:17 נָסְע֣וּ “ They have moved on nā·sə·‘ū מִזֶּ֔ה from here , ” miz·zeh כִּ֤י . . . kî הָאִישׁ֙ the man hā·’îš וַיֹּ֤אמֶר answered . way·yō·mer שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ “ I heard them šā·ma‘·tî אֹֽמְרִ֔ים say , ’ō·mə·rîm נֵלְכָ֖ה ‘ Let us go nê·lə·ḵāh דֹּתָ֑יְנָה to Dothan . ’” dō·ṯā·yə·nāh יוֹסֵף֙ So Joseph yō·w·sêp̄ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ set out way·yê·leḵ אַחַ֣ר after ’a·ḥar אֶחָ֔יו his brothers ’e·ḥāw וַיִּמְצָאֵ֖ם and found them way·yim·ṣā·’êm בְּדֹתָֽן׃ at Dothan . bə·ḏō·ṯān Genesis 37:18 וַיִּרְא֥וּ Now [Joseph’s brothers] saw way·yir·’ū אֹת֖וֹ him ’ō·ṯōw מֵרָחֹ֑ק in the distance , mê·rā·ḥōq וּבְטֶ֙רֶם֙ and before ū·ḇə·ṭe·rem יִקְרַ֣ב he arrived , yiq·raḇ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם . . . ’ă·lê·hem וַיִּֽתְנַכְּל֥וּ they plotted way·yiṯ·nak·kə·lū אֹת֖וֹ - ’ō·ṯōw לַהֲמִיתֽוֹ׃ to kill him . la·hă·mî·ṯōw Genesis 37:19 הִנֵּ֗ה “ Here hin·nêh בָּֽא׃ comes bā הַלָּזֶ֖ה that hal·lā·zeh בַּ֛עַל dreamer ba·‘al הַחֲלֹמ֥וֹת . . . ! ” ha·ḥă·lō·mō·wṯ וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ they said way·yō·mə·rū אֶל־ to ’el- אִ֣ישׁ one ’îš אָחִ֑יו another . ’ā·ḥîw Genesis 37:20 לְכ֣וּ “ Come lə·ḵū וְעַתָּ֣ה׀ now , wə·‘at·tāh וְנַֽהַרְגֵ֗הוּ let us kill him wə·na·har·ḡê·hū וְנַשְׁלִכֵ֙הוּ֙ and throw him wə·naš·li·ḵê·hū בְּאַחַ֣ד into one bə·’a·ḥaḏ הַבֹּר֔וֹת of the pits . hab·bō·rō·wṯ וְאָמַ֕רְנוּ We can say wə·’ā·mar·nū רָעָ֖ה that a vicious rā·‘āh חַיָּ֥ה animal ḥay·yāh אֲכָלָ֑תְהוּ has devoured him . ’ă·ḵā·lā·ṯə·hū וְנִרְאֶ֕ה Then we shall see wə·nir·’eh מַה־ what mah- יִּהְי֖וּ becomes yih·yū חֲלֹמֹתָֽיו׃ of his dreams ! ” ḥă·lō·mō·ṯāw Genesis 37:21 רְאוּבֵ֔ן When Reuben rə·’ū·ḇên וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע heard [this] , way·yiš·ma‘ וַיַּצִּלֵ֖הוּ he tried to rescue [Joseph] way·yaṣ·ṣi·lê·hū מִיָּדָ֑ם from their hands . mî·yā·ḏām לֹ֥א “ Let us not lō נַכֶּ֖נּוּ take nak·ken·nū נָֽפֶשׁ׃ his life , ” nā·p̄eš וַיֹּ֕אמֶר he said . way·yō·mer Genesis 37:22 תִּשְׁפְּכוּ־ “ Do not shed tiš·pə·ḵū- דָם֒ [his] blood . ḏām הַשְׁלִ֣יכוּ Throw haš·lî·ḵū אֹת֗וֹ him ’ō·ṯōw אֶל־ into ’el- הַזֶּה֙ this haz·zeh אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer
