וְעָיֵ֥ף exhausted , wə·‘ā·yêp̄ וְצָמֵ֖א and thirsty wə·ṣā·mê בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ in the wilderness . ” bam·miḏ·bār 2 Samuel 18:1 דָּוִ֔ד Then David dā·wiḏ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיִּפְקֹ֣ד reviewed way·yip̄·qōḏ הָעָ֖ם his troops hā·‘ām אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer אִתּ֑וֹ - ’it·tōw וַיָּ֣שֶׂם and appointed way·yā·śem עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם over them ‘ă·lê·hem שָׂרֵ֥י commanders śā·rê מֵאֽוֹת׃ of hundreds mê·’ō·wṯ אֲלָפִ֖ים and of thousands ’ă·lā·p̄îm וְשָׂרֵ֥י . . . . wə·śā·rê 2 Samuel 18:2 דָּוִ֜ד He dā·wiḏ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיְשַׁלַּ֨ח sent out way·šal·laḥ הָעָ֗ם the troops , hā·‘ām הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֤ית a third haš·šə·li·šîṯ בְּיַד־ . . . bə·yaḏ- יוֹאָב֙ under Joab , yō·w·’āḇ וְ֠הַשְּׁלִשִׁית a third wə·haš·šə·li·šîṯ בְּיַ֨ד . . . bə·yaḏ יוֹאָ֔ב under Joab’s yō·w·’āḇ אֲחִ֣י brother ’ă·ḥî אֲבִישַׁ֤י Abishai ’ă·ḇî·šay בֶּן־ son ben- צְרוּיָה֙ of Zeruiah , ṣə·rū·yāh וְהַ֨שְּׁלִשִׁ֔ת and a third wə·haš·šə·li·šiṯ בְּיַ֖ד . . . bə·yaḏ אִתַּ֣י under Ittai ’it·tay הַגִּתִּ֑יס the Gittite . hag·git·tīs הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ And the king ham·me·leḵ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said way·yō·mer אֶל־ to ’el- הָעָ֔ם the troops , hā·‘ām אֲנִ֖י “ I ’ă·nî יָצֹ֥א will surely march out yā·ṣō אֵצֵ֛א . . . ’ê·ṣê עִמָּכֶֽם׃ with you ‘im·mā·ḵem גַּם־ as well . ” gam- 2 Samuel 18:3 הָעָ֜ם But the people hā·‘ām וַיֹּ֨אמֶר pleaded , way·yō·mer לֹ֣א “ You must not lō תֵצֵ֗א go out ! ṯê·ṣê כִּי֩ For kî אִם־ if ’im- נֹ֨ס we have to flee nōs נָנ֜וּס . . . , nā·nūs לֹא־ vvv lō- יָשִׂ֧ימוּ they will pay no attention yā·śî·mū לֵ֗ב . . . lêḇ אֵלֵ֣ינוּ to us . ’ê·lê·nū וְאִם־ Even if wə·’im- חֶצְיֵ֙נוּ֙ half of us ḥeṣ·yê·nū יָמֻ֤תוּ die , yā·mu·ṯū לֹֽא־ they will not lō- יָשִׂ֤ימוּ care yā·śî·mū לֵ֔ב . . . lêḇ אֵלֵ֙ינוּ֙ - ; ’ê·lê·nū כִּֽי־ but kî- עַתָּ֥ה - ‘at·tāh כָמֹ֖נוּ [you are] worth ḵā·mō·nū עֲשָׂרָ֣ה ten ‘ă·śā·rāh אֲלָפִ֑ים thousand of us . ’ă·lā·p̄îm ט֔וֹב It is better ṭō·wḇ וְעַתָּ֣ה for now wə·‘at·tāh כִּי־ . . . kî- תִֽהְיֶה־ . . . ṯih·yeh- לַעְזִיר׃ס if you support laʿ·zīr לָּ֥נוּ us lā·nū מֵעִ֖יר from the city . ” mê·‘îr 2 Samuel 18:4 אֶעֱשֶׂ֑ה “ I will do ’e·‘ĕ·śeh אֲשֶׁר־ whatever ’ă·šer- יִיטַ֥ב seems best yî·ṭaḇ בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֖ם to you , ” bə·‘ê·nê·ḵem הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king ham·me·leḵ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר replied way·yō·mer אֲלֵיהֶם֙ - . ’ă·lê·hem הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ So he ham·me·leḵ וַיַּעֲמֹ֤ד stood way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ אֶל־ beside ’el- יַ֣ד . . . yaḏ הַשַּׁ֔עַר the gate , haš·ša·‘ar וְכָל־ while all wə·ḵāl הָעָם֙ the troops hā·‘ām יָֽצְא֔וּ marched out yā·ṣə·’ū
