אֲדֹֽנֵיהֶ֗ם their lord , ’ă·ḏō·nê·hem כִּֽי־ “ Just because kî- שָׁלַ֥ח David has sent šā·laḥ לְךָ֖ you lə·ḵā מְנַֽחֲמִ֑ים comforters , mə·na·ḥă·mîm בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ do you really believe bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā דָּוִ֤ד he is dā·wiḏ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַֽמְכַבֵּ֨ד showing respect ham·ḵab·bêḏ אָבִ֙יךָ֙ for your father ? ’ā·ḇî·ḵā הֲ֠לוֹא Has not hă·lō·w דָּוִ֛ד David dā·wiḏ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- שָׁלַ֥ח [instead] sent šā·laḥ עֲבָדָ֖יו his servants ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ . . . ’ê·le·ḵā בַּעֲב֞וּר - ba·‘ă·ḇūr חֲק֤וֹר to explore ḥă·qō·wr אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הָעִיר֙ the city , hā·‘îr וּלְרַגְּלָ֣הּ spy it out , ū·lə·rag·gə·lāh וּלְהָפְכָ֔הּ and overthrow it ? ” ū·lə·hā·p̄ə·ḵāh 2 Samuel 10:4 חָנ֜וּן So Hanun ḥā·nūn אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיִּקַּ֨ח took way·yiq·qaḥ דָוִ֗ד David’s ḏā·wiḏ עַבְדֵ֣י servants , ‘aḇ·ḏê וַיְגַלַּח֙ shaved off way·ḡal·laḥ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- חֲצִ֣י half ḥă·ṣî זְקָנָ֔ם of each man’s beard , zə·qā·nām וַיִּכְרֹ֧ת cut off way·yiḵ·rōṯ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- מַדְוֵיהֶ֛ם their garments maḏ·wê·hem בַּחֵ֖צִי vvv ba·ḥê·ṣî עַ֣ד at ‘aḏ שְׁתֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם the hips , šə·ṯō·w·ṯê·hem וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃ and sent them away . way·šal·lə·ḥêm 2 Samuel 10:5 וַיַּגִּ֤דוּ When this was reported way·yag·gi·ḏū לְדָוִד֙ to David , lə·ḏā·wiḏ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח he sent messengers way·yiš·laḥ לִקְרָאתָ֔ם to meet [the men] , liq·rā·ṯām כִּֽי־ since kî- הָי֥וּ they had been hā·yū הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים . . . hā·’ă·nā·šîm מְאֹ֑ד thoroughly mə·’ōḏ נִכְלָמִ֣ים humiliated . niḵ·lā·mîm הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ The king ham·me·leḵ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר told them , way·yō·mer שְׁב֣וּ “ Stay šə·ḇū בִֽירֵח֔וֹ in Jericho ḇî·rê·ḥōw עַד־ until ‘aḏ- זְקַנְכֶ֖ם your beards zə·qan·ḵem יְצַמַּ֥ח have grown back , yə·ṣam·maḥ וְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃ and [then] return . ” wə·šaḇ·tem 2 Samuel 10:6 בְּנֵ֣י When the Ammonites bə·nê עַמּ֔וֹן . . . ‘am·mō·wn כִּ֥י . . . kî וַיִּרְאוּ֙ realized that way·yir·’ū נִבְאֲשׁ֖וּ they had become a stench niḇ·’ă·šū בְּדָוִ֑ד to David , bə·ḏā·wiḏ וַיִּשְׁלְח֣וּ . . . way·yiš·lə·ḥū בְנֵֽי־ they ḇə·nê- עַמּ֡וֹן . . . ‘am·mō·wn וַיִּשְׂכְּרוּ֩ hired way·yiś·kə·rū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- עֶשְׂרִ֥ים twenty ‘eś·rîm אֶ֙לֶף֙ thousand ’e·lep̄ אֲרַ֨ם Aramean ’ă·ram רַגְלִ֔י foot soldiers raḡ·lî בֵּית־ vvv bêṯ- רְח֜וֹב from Beth-rehob rə·ḥō·wḇ וְאֶת־ and wə·’eṯ- אֲרַ֣ם - ’ă·ram צוֹבָ֗א Zoba , ṣō·w·ḇā וְאֶת־ as well as wə·’eṯ- אֶ֣לֶף a thousand ’e·lep̄ אִ֔ישׁ men ’îš מֶ֤לֶךְ from the king me·leḵ מַֽעֲכָה֙ of Maacah ma·‘ă·ḵāh שְׁנֵים־ and twelve šə·nêm- עָשָׂ֥ר . . . ‘ā·śār אֶ֖לֶף . . . ’e·lep̄ אִֽישׁ׃ thousand ’îš וְאִ֣ישׁ men wə·’îš ט֔וֹב from Tob . ṭō·wḇ 2 Samuel 10:7 וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע On hearing this , way·yiš·ma‘ דָּוִ֑ד David dā·wiḏ
