לִפְנֵ֣י against lip̄·nê אָבִ֔יךָ your father , ’ā·ḇî·ḵā כִּ֥י that kî מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ he wants to take mə·ḇaq·qêš אֶת־ - ’eṯ- נַפְשִֽׁי׃ my life ?” nap̄·šî 1 Samuel 20:2 חָלִילָה֮ “ Far from it ! ” ḥā·lî·lāh וַיֹּ֨אמֶר Jonathan replied way·yō·mer ל֣וֹ . lōw לֹ֣א “ You will not lō תָמוּת֒ die . ṯā·mūṯ הִנֵּ֡ה Indeed hin·nêh לוֹ־ - , lō- אָבִ֜י my father ’ā·ḇî עָשָׂה does nothing , ʿå̄·śå̄h דָּבָ֣ר . . . dā·ḇār גָּד֗וֹל great gā·ḏō·wl א֚וֹ or ’ōw דָּבָ֣ר - dā·ḇār קָטֹ֔ן small , qā·ṭōn וְלֹ֥א without wə·lō יִגְלֶ֖ה telling yiḡ·leh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- אָזְנִ֑י me . ’ā·zə·nî וּמַדּוּעַ֩ So why ū·mad·dū·a‘ אָבִ֥י would he ’ā·ḇî יַסְתִּ֨יר hide yas·tîr הַזֶּ֖ה this haz·zeh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַדָּבָ֥ר matter had·dā·ḇār מִמֶּ֛נִּי from me ? mim·men·nî אֵ֥ין This cannot be true ’ên זֹֽאת׃ . . . ! ” zōṯ 1 Samuel 20:3 דָּוִ֗ד But David dā·wiḏ ע֜וֹד again ‘ō·wḏ וַיִּשָּׁבַ֨ע vowed way·yiš·šā·ḇa‘ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ . . . , way·yō·mer אָבִ֗יךָ “ Your father ’ā·ḇî·ḵā יָדֹ֨עַ knows very well yā·ḏō·a‘ יָדַ֜ע . . . yā·ḏa‘ כִּֽי־ that kî- מָצָ֤אתִי I have found mā·ṣā·ṯî חֵן֙ favor ḥên בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ in your eyes , bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā וַיֹּ֛אמֶר and he has said , way·yō·mer יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן ‘ Jonathan yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān אַל־ must not ’al- יֵֽדַע־ know yê·ḏa‘- זֹ֥את of this , zōṯ פֶּן־ or pen- יֵֽעָצֵ֑ב he will be grieved . ’ yê·‘ā·ṣêḇ וְאוּלָ֗ם As surely as wə·’ū·lām יְהוָה֙ YHWH Yah·weh חַי־ lives ḥay- נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ and as you nap̄·še·ḵā כִּ֣י . . . kî וְחֵ֣י yourself live , wə·ḥê כְפֶ֔שַׂע there is but a step ḵə·p̄e·śa‘ בֵּינִ֖י between me bê·nî וּבֵ֥ין and ū·ḇên הַמָּֽוֶת׃ death .” ham·mā·weṯ 1 Samuel 20:4 יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן Then Jonathan yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said way·yō·mer אֶל־ to ’el- דָּוִ֑ד David , dā·wiḏ מַה־ “ Whatever mah- נַפְשְׁךָ֖ you nap̄·šə·ḵā תֹּאמַ֥ר desire , tō·mar וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ I will do wə·’e·‘ĕ·śeh- לָּֽךְ׃פ for you .” lāḵ 1 Samuel 20:5 דָּוִ֜ד So David dā·wiḏ אֶל־ . . . ’el- וַיֹּ֨אמֶר told way·yō·mer יְהוֹנָתָ֗ן him , yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān הִֽנֵּה־ “ Look , hin·nêh- מָחָ֔ר tomorrow mā·ḥār חֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ is the New Moon , ḥō·ḏeš וְאָנֹכִ֛י and I am wə·’ā·nō·ḵî יָשֹׁב־ supposed to dine yā·šōḇ- אֵשֵׁ֥ב . . . ’ê·šêḇ לֶאֱכ֑וֹל . . . le·’ĕ·ḵō·wl עִם־ with ‘im- הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king . ham·me·leḵ וְשִׁלַּחְתַּ֙נִי֙ Instead, let me go wə·šil·laḥ·ta·nî וְנִסְתַּרְתִּ֣י and hide wə·nis·tar·tî בַשָּׂדֶ֔ה in the field ḇaś·śā·ḏeh עַ֖ד until ‘aḏ הַשְּׁלִשִֽׁית׃ the third haš·šə·li·šîṯ
