מִנְחָ֑ה gifts ; min·ḥāh וַיְהִ֖י but [Saul] remained way·hî כְּמַחֲרִֽישׁ׃פ silent [about it] . kə·ma·ḥă·rîš 1 Samuel 11:1 נָחָשׁ֙ Soon Nahash nā·ḥāš הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֔י the Ammonite hā·‘am·mō·w·nî וַיַּ֗עַל came up way·ya·‘al וַיִּ֖חַן and laid siege way·yi·ḥan עַל־ to ‘al- יָבֵ֣שׁ Jabesh-gilead . yā·ḇêš גִּלְעָ֑ד . . . gil·‘āḏ כָּל־ All kāl- אַנְשֵׁ֤י the men ’an·šê יָבֵישׁ֙ of Jabesh yā·ḇêš וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ said way·yō·mə·rū אֶל־ to ’el- נָחָ֔שׁ him , nā·ḥāš כְּרָת־ “ Make kə·rāṯ- בְרִ֖ית a treaty ḇə·rîṯ לָ֥נוּ with us , lā·nū וְנַעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃ and we will serve you .” wə·na·‘aḇ·ḏe·kā 1 Samuel 11:2 נָחָשׁ֙ But Nahash nā·ḥāš הָעַמּוֹנִ֔י the Ammonite hā·‘am·mō·w·nî וַיֹּ֣אמֶר replied , way·yō·mer אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם . . . ’ă·lê·hem אֶכְרֹ֣ת “ I will make [a treaty] ’eḵ·rōṯ לָכֶ֔ם with you lā·ḵem בְּזֹאת֙ on one [condition] , bə·zōṯ בִּנְק֥וֹר that I may put out bin·qō·wr לָכֶ֖ם vvv lā·ḵem כָּל־ everyone’s kāl- יָמִ֑ין right yā·mîn עֵ֣ין eye ‘ên וְשַׂמְתִּ֥יהָ and bring wə·śam·tî·hā חֶרְפָּ֖ה reproach ḥer·pāh עַל־ upon ‘al- כָּל־ all kāl- יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel .” yiś·rā·’êl 1 Samuel 11:3 הֶ֤רֶף “ Hold off he·rep̄ לָ֙נוּ֙ for lā·nū שִׁבְעַ֣ת seven šiḇ·‘aṯ יָמִ֔ים days , ” yā·mîm וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ replied way·yō·mə·rū אֵלָ֜יו - ’ê·lāw זִקְנֵ֣י the elders ziq·nê יָבֵ֗ישׁ of Jabesh , yā·ḇêš וְנִשְׁלְחָה֙ “ and let us send wə·niš·lə·ḥāh מַלְאָכִ֔ים messengers mal·’ā·ḵîm בְּכֹ֖ל throughout bə·ḵōl גְּב֣וּל - gə·ḇūl יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel . yiś·rā·’êl וְאִם־ If wə·’im- אֵ֥ין [there is] no one ’ên מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ to save mō·wō·šî·a‘ אֹתָ֖נוּ us , ’ō·ṯā·nū וְיָצָ֥אנוּ we will surrender wə·yā·ṣā·nū אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ to you .” ’ê·le·ḵā 1 Samuel 11:4 הַמַּלְאָכִים֙ When the messengers ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ came way·yā·ḇō·’ū גִּבְעַ֣ת to Gibeah giḇ·‘aṯ שָׁא֔וּל of Saul šā·’ūl וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ and relayed way·ḏab·bə·rū הַדְּבָרִ֖ים these words had·də·ḇā·rîm בְּאָזְנֵ֣י in the hearing bə·’ā·zə·nê הָעָ֑ם of the people , hā·‘ām כָל־ they all ḵāl הָעָ֛ם . . . hā·‘ām אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃ wept way·yiḇ·kū וַיִּשְׂא֧וּ aloud way·yiś·’ū קוֹלָ֖ם . . . . qō·w·lām 1 Samuel 11:5 וְהִנֵּ֣ה Just then wə·hin·nêh שָׁא֗וּל Saul šā·’ūl בָּ֣א was returning bā מִן־ from min- הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה the field , haś·śā·ḏeh אַחֲרֵ֤י behind ’a·ḥă·rê הַבָּקָר֙ his oxen . hab·bā·qār מַה־ “ What [troubles] mah- לָּעָ֖ם the people ? ” lā·‘ām וַיֹּ֣אמֶר asked way·yō·mer שָׁא֔וּל Saul . šā·’ūl כִּ֣י “ Why kî יִבְכּ֑וּ are they weeping ? ” yiḇ·kū וַיְסַ֨פְּרוּ־ And they relayed way·sap·pə·rū- ל֔וֹ to him lōw
