אֲר֣וֹן the ark ’ă·rō·wn הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm הִלָּקַח֙ had been captured hil·lā·qaḥ וְאֶל־ [and] wə·’el- חָמִ֖יהָ her father-in-law ḥā·mî·hā וְאִישָֽׁהּ׃ and her husband had been killed . wə·’î·šāh 1 Samuel 4:22 כָב֖וֹד “ The glory ḵā·ḇō·wḏ גָּלָ֥ה has departed gā·lāh מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל from Israel , ” mî·yiś·rā·’êl וַתֹּ֕אמֶר she said , wat·tō·mer כִּ֥י “ for kî אֲר֥וֹן the ark ’ă·rō·wn הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃פ of God hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm נִלְקַ֖ח has been captured .” nil·qaḥ 1 Samuel 5:1 וּפְלִשְׁתִּים֙ After the Philistines ū·p̄ə·liš·tîm לָֽקְח֔וּ had captured lā·qə·ḥū אֵ֖ת - ’êṯ אֲר֣וֹן the ark ’ă·rō·wn הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים of God , hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm וַיְבִאֻ֛הוּ they took it way·ḇi·’u·hū מֵאֶ֥בֶן from mê·’e·ḇen הָעֵ֖זֶר Ebenezer hā·‘ê·zer אַשְׁדּֽוֹדָה׃ to Ashdod , ’aš·dō·w·ḏāh 1 Samuel 5:2 וַיִּקְח֤וּ - way·yiq·ḥū פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ - p̄ə·liš·tîm אֶת־ - ’eṯ- אֲר֣וֹן - ’ă·rō·wn הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים . . . hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ carried it into way·yā·ḇî·’ū אֹת֖וֹ - ’ō·ṯōw בֵּ֣ית the temple bêṯ דָּג֑וֹן of Dagon , dā·ḡō·wn וַיַּצִּ֥יגוּ and set way·yaṣ·ṣî·ḡū אֹת֖וֹ it ’ō·ṯōw אֵ֥צֶל beside ’ê·ṣel דָּגֽוֹן׃ [his statue] . dā·ḡō·wn 1 Samuel 5:3 אַשְׁדּוֹדִים֙ When the people of Ashdod ’aš·dō·w·ḏîm וַיַּשְׁכִּ֤מוּ got up early way·yaš·ki·mū מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת the next morning , mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ וְהִנֵּ֣ה there wə·hin·nêh דָג֗וֹן was Dagon , ḏā·ḡō·wn נֹפֵ֤ל fallen nō·p̄êl לְפָנָיו֙ on his face lə·p̄ā·nāw אַ֔רְצָה . . . ’ar·ṣāh לִפְנֵ֖י before lip̄·nê אֲר֣וֹן the ark ’ă·rō·wn יְהוָ֑ה of YHWH . Yah·weh וַיִּקְחוּ֙ So they took way·yiq·ḥū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- דָּג֔וֹן Dagon dā·ḡō·wn וַיָּשִׁ֥בוּ and returned way·yā·ši·ḇū אֹת֖וֹ him ’ō·ṯōw לִמְקוֹמֽוֹ׃ to his place . lim·qō·w·mōw 1 Samuel 5:4 וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּ But when they got up early way·yaš·ki·mū מִֽמָּחֳרָת֒ the next mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ בַבֹּקֶר֮ morning , ḇab·bō·qer וְהִנֵּ֣ה there wə·hin·nêh דָג֗וֹן was Dagon , ḏā·ḡō·wn נֹפֵ֤ל fallen nō·p̄êl לְפָנָיו֙ on his face lə·p̄ā·nāw אַ֔רְצָה . . . ’ar·ṣāh לִפְנֵ֖י before lip̄·nê אֲר֣וֹן the ark ’ă·rō·wn יְהוָ֑ה of YHWH , Yah·weh וְרֹ֨אשׁ with [his] head wə·rōš דָּג֜וֹן . . . dā·ḡō·wn וּשְׁתֵּ֣י׀ - ū·šə·tê כַּפּ֣וֹת [and] kap·pō·wṯ יָדָ֗יו his hands yā·ḏāw כְּרֻתוֹת֙ broken off kə·ru·ṯō·wṯ אֶל־ and lying on ’el- הַמִּפְתָּ֔ן the threshold . ham·mip̄·tān רַ֥ק Only raq דָּג֖וֹן [the torso] dā·ḡō·wn נִשְׁאַ֥ר remained niš·’ar עָלָֽיו׃ . . . . ‘ā·lāw 1 Samuel 5:5 עַל־ That is why ‘al- כֵּ֡ן . . . , kên עַ֖ד to ‘aḏ הַזֶּֽה׃ס this haz·zeh הַיּ֥וֹם day , hay·yō·wm כֹהֲנֵ֨י the priests ḵō·hă·nê
