1 Samuel 4:12 הַה֑וּא That same ha·hū בַּיּ֣וֹם day bay·yō·wm בִּנְיָמִן֙ a Benjamite bin·yā·min אִישׁ־ . . . ’îš- וַיָּ֤רָץ ran way·yā·rāṣ מֵהַמַּ֣עֲרָכָ֔ה from the battle line mê·ham·ma·‘ă·rā·ḵāh וַיָּבֹ֥א all the way way·yā·ḇō שִׁלֹ֖ה to Shiloh , ši·lōh וּמַדָּ֣יו with his clothes ū·mad·dāw קְרֻעִ֔ים torn qə·ru·‘îm וַאֲדָמָ֖ה and dirt wa·’ă·ḏā·māh עַל־ on ‘al- רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ his head . rō·šōw 1 Samuel 4:13 וַיָּב֗וֹא When he arrived , way·yā·ḇō·w וְהִנֵּ֣ה there wə·hin·nêh עֵ֠לִי was Eli , ‘ê·lî יֹשֵׁ֨ב sitting yō·šêḇ עַֽל־ on ‘al- הַכִּסֵּ֜א his chair hak·kis·sê יַךְ beside yaḵ דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ the road de·reḵ מְצַפֶּ֔ה [and] watching , mə·ṣap·peh כִּֽי־ because kî- לִבּוֹ֙ his heart lib·bōw הָיָ֤ה vvv hā·yāh חָרֵ֔ד trembled ḥā·rêḏ עַ֖ל for ‘al אֲר֣וֹן the ark ’ă·rō·wn הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים of God . hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm וְהָאִ֗ישׁ When the man wə·hā·’îš בָּ֚א entered bā בָּעִ֔יר the city bā·‘îr לְהַגִּ֣יד to give a report , lə·hag·gîḏ כָּל־ the whole kāl- הָעִֽיר׃ city hā·‘îr וַתִּזְעַ֖ק cried out . wat·tiz·‘aq 1 Samuel 4:14 עֵלִי֙ Eli ‘ê·lî אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע heard way·yiš·ma‘ ק֣וֹל the outcry qō·wl הַצְּעָקָ֔ה . . . haṣ·ṣə·‘ā·qāh וַיֹּ֕אמֶר and asked , way·yō·mer מֶ֛ה “ Why meh ק֥וֹל . . . qō·wl הַזֶּ֑ה this haz·zeh הֶהָמ֖וֹן commotion ? ” he·hā·mō·wn וְהָאִ֣ישׁ So the man wə·hā·’îš מִהַ֔ר hurried over mi·har וַיָּבֹ֖א . . . way·yā·ḇō וַיַּגֵּ֥ד and reported way·yag·gêḏ לְעֵלִֽי׃ to Eli . lə·‘ê·lî 1 Samuel 4:15 וְעֵלִ֕י Now Eli wə·‘ê·lî תִּשְׁעִ֥ים was ninety-eight tiš·‘îm וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה . . . ū·šə·mō·neh בֶּן־ years old ben- שָׁנָ֑ה . . . , šā·nāh וְעֵינָ֣יו and his gaze wə·‘ê·nāw קָ֔מָה was fixed qā·māh וְלֹ֥א because he could not wə·lō יָכ֖וֹל . . . yā·ḵō·wl לִרְאֽוֹת׃ see . lir·’ō·wṯ 1 Samuel 4:16 אָֽנֹכִי֙ “ I ’ā·nō·ḵî הַבָּ֣א have just come hab·bā מִן־ from min- הַמַּעֲרָכָ֔ה the battle , ” ham·ma·‘ă·rā·ḵāh הָאִ֜ישׁ the man hā·’îš וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said way·yō·mer אֶל־ to ’el- עֵלִ֗י Eli . ‘ê·lî וַאֲנִ֕י “ I wa·’ă·nî נַ֣סְתִּי fled nas·tî מִן־ from min- הַמַּעֲרָכָ֖ה there today ham·ma·‘ă·rā·ḵāh הַיּ֑וֹם . . . .” hay·yō·wm מֶֽה־ “ What meh- הָיָ֥ה happened hā·yāh הַדָּבָ֖ר . . . , had·dā·ḇār בְּנִֽי׃ my son ?” bə·nî וַיֹּ֛אמֶר Eli asked . way·yō·mer 1 Samuel 4:17 הַֽמְבַשֵּׂ֜ר The messenger ham·ḇaś·śêr וַיֹּ֗אמֶר . . . way·yō·mer וַיַּ֨עַן answered , way·ya·‘an
