ק֣וֹל . . . qō·wl הַזֹּ֖את this haz·zōṯ הַגְּדוֹלָ֛ה loud hag·gə·ḏō·w·lāh הַתְּרוּעָ֧ה shouting hat·tə·rū·‘āh בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה in the camp bə·ma·ḥă·nêh הָעִבְרִ֑ים of the Hebrews ? ” hā·‘iḇ·rîm וַיֵּ֣דְע֔וּ And when they realized way·yê·ḏə·‘ū כִּ֚י that kî אֲר֣וֹן the ark ’ă·rō·wn יְהוָ֔ה of YHWH Yah·weh בָּ֖א had entered bā אֶל־ . . . ’el- הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ the camp , ham·ma·ḥă·neh 1 Samuel 4:7 הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים the Philistines hap·pə·liš·tîm וַיִּֽרְאוּ֙ were afraid way·yir·’ū כִּ֣י - . kî אֱלֹהִ֖ים “ The gods ’ĕ·lō·hîm בָּ֥א have entered bā אֶל־ . . . ’el- הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה their camp ! ” ham·ma·ḥă·neh וַיֹּאמְרוּ֙ . . . way·yō·mə·rū אָמְר֔וּ they said . ’ā·mə·rū א֣וֹי “ Woe ’ō·w לָ֔נוּ to us , lā·nū כִּ֣י for kî לֹ֥א nothing lō כָּזֹ֖את like this kā·zōṯ הָיְתָ֛ה has happened hā·yə·ṯāh אֶתְמ֥וֹל before ’eṯ·mō·wl שִׁלְשֹֽׁם׃ . . . . šil·šōm 1 Samuel 4:8 א֣וֹי Woe ’ō·w לָ֔נוּ to us ! lā·nū מִ֣י Who mî יַצִּילֵ֔נוּ will deliver us yaṣ·ṣî·lê·nū מִיַּ֛ד from the hand mî·yaḏ הָאֵ֑לֶּה of these hā·’êl·leh הָאַדִּירִ֖ים mighty hā·’ad·dî·rîm הָאֱלֹהִ֥ים gods ? hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm אֵ֧לֶּה These ’êl·leh הֵ֣ם . . . hêm הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים are the gods hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm הַמַּכִּ֧ים who struck ham·mak·kîm אֶת־ - ’eṯ- מִצְרַ֛יִם the Egyptians miṣ·ra·yim בְּכָל־ with all kinds bə·ḵāl מַכָּ֖ה of plagues mak·kāh בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ in the wilderness . bam·miḏ·bār 1 Samuel 4:9 הִֽתְחַזְּק֞וּ Take courage hiṯ·ḥaz·zə·qū וִֽהְי֤וּ and be wih·yū לַֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ men , la·’ă·nā·šîm פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים O Philistines ! pə·liš·tîm פֶּ֚ן Otherwise , pen תַּעַבְד֣וּ you will serve ta·‘aḇ·ḏū לָעִבְרִ֔ים the Hebrews lā·‘iḇ·rîm כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר just as ka·’ă·šer עָבְד֖וּ they served ‘ā·ḇə·ḏū לָכֶ֑ם you . lā·ḵem וִהְיִיתֶ֥ם Now be wih·yî·ṯem לַאֲנָשִׁ֖ים men la·’ă·nā·šîm וְנִלְחַמְתֶּֽם׃ and fight !” wə·nil·ḥam·tem 1 Samuel 4:10 פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים So the Philistines p̄ə·liš·tîm וַיִּלָּחֲמ֣וּ fought , way·yil·lā·ḥă·mū יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ and Israel yiś·rā·’êl וַיִּנָּ֤גֶף was defeated , way·yin·nā·ḡep̄ אִ֣ישׁ and each man ’îš וַיָּנֻ֙סוּ֙ fled way·yā·nu·sū לְאֹהָלָ֔יו to his tent . lə·’ō·hā·lāw הַמַּכָּ֖ה The slaughter ham·mak·kāh וַתְּהִ֥י was wat·tə·hî מְאֹ֑ד very mə·’ōḏ גְּדוֹלָ֣ה great — gə·ḏō·w·lāh שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים thirty šə·lō·šîm אֶ֖לֶף thousand ’e·lep̄ רַגְלִֽי׃ foot soldiers raḡ·lî מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel mî·yiś·rā·’êl וַיִּפֹּל֙ fell . way·yip·pōl 1 Samuel 4:11 וַאֲר֥וֹן The ark wa·’ă·rō·wn אֱלֹהִ֖ים of God ’ĕ·lō·hîm נִלְקָ֑ח was captured , nil·qāḥ עֵלִי֙ and Eli’s ‘ê·lî וּשְׁנֵ֤י two ū·šə·nê בְנֵֽי־ sons , ḇə·nê- חָפְנִ֖י Hophni ḥā·p̄ə·nî וּפִֽינְחָֽס׃ and Phinehas , ū·p̄î·nə·ḥās מֵ֔תוּ died . mê·ṯū
