הַחֵ֔רֶם what was set apart . ha·ḥê·rem אַ֥ף So the anger ’ap̄ יְהוָ֖ה of YHWH Yah·weh וַיִּֽחַר־ burned way·yi·ḥar- בִּבְנֵ֥י against the Israelites biḇ·nê יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ . . . . yiś·rā·’êl Joshua 7:2 יְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ Meanwhile, Joshua yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ sent way·yiš·laḥ אֲנָשִׁ֜ים men ’ă·nā·šîm מִֽירִיח֗וֹ from Jericho mî·rî·ḥōw הָעַ֞י to Ai , hā·‘ay אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ’ă·šer עִם־ is near ‘im- בֵּ֥ית vvv bêṯ אָ֙וֶן֙ Beth-aven ’ā·wen מִקֶּ֣דֶם to the east miq·qe·ḏem לְבֵֽית־ vvv lə·ḇêṯ- אֵ֔ל of Bethel , ’êl וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and told them , way·yō·mer אֲלֵיהֶם֙ . . . ’ă·lê·hem לֵאמֹ֔ר . . . lê·mōr עֲל֖וּ “ Go up ‘ă·lū וְרַגְּל֣וּ and spy out wə·rag·gə·lū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הָאָ֑רֶץ the land . ” hā·’ā·reṣ הָאֲנָשִׁ֔ים So the men hā·’ă·nā·šîm וַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙ went up way·ya·‘ă·lū וַֽיְרַגְּל֖וּ and spied out way·rag·gə·lū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הָעָֽי׃ Ai . hā·‘āy Joshua 7:3 וַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּ On returning way·yā·šu·ḇū אֶל־ to ’el- יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ Joshua , yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ they reported way·yō·mə·rū אֵלָיו֮ . . . , ’ê·lāw אַל־ “ There is no need ’al- יַ֣עַל . . . ya·‘al כָּל־ to send all kāl- הָעָם֒ the people ; hā·‘ām כְּאַלְפַּ֣יִם two kə·’al·pa·yim אִ֗ישׁ - ’îš א֚וֹ or ’ōw כִּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת three kiš·lō·šeṯ אֲלָפִ֣ים thousand ’ă·lā·p̄îm אִ֔ישׁ men [are enough] ’îš יַעֲל֖וּ to go up ya·‘ă·lū וְיַכּ֣וּ and attack wə·yak·kū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הָעָ֑י Ai . hā·‘āy כִּ֥י Since kî הֵֽמָּה׃ the people of Ai hêm·māh מְעַ֖ט are so few , mə·‘aṭ אַל־ you need not ’al- תְּיַגַּע־ wear out tə·yag·ga‘- כָּל־ all kāl- הָעָ֔ם our people hā·‘ām שָׁ֙מָּה֙ there šām·māh אֶת־ - . ” ’eṯ- Joshua 7:4 כִּשְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת So about three kiš·lō·šeṯ אֲלָפִ֖ים thousand ’ă·lā·p̄îm אִ֑ישׁ men ’îš וַיַּעֲל֤וּ went up way·ya·‘ă·lū מִן־ . . . min- הָעָם֙ . . . hā·‘ām שָׁ֔מָּה . . . , šām·māh וַיָּנֻ֕סוּ but they fled way·yā·nu·sū לִפְנֵ֖י before lip̄·nê אַנְשֵׁ֥י the men ’an·šê הָעָֽי׃ of Ai . hā·‘āy Joshua 7:5 אִ֔ישׁ And the men ’îš הָעַ֗י of Ai hā·‘ay וַיַּכּ֨וּ struck down way·yak·kū מֵהֶ֜ם . . . mê·hem אַנְשֵׁ֣י . . . ’an·šê כִּשְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים about thirty-six of them , kiš·lō·šîm וְשִׁשָּׁה֙ . . . wə·šiš·šāh וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֞וּם chasing them way·yir·də·p̄ūm לִפְנֵ֤י from lip̄·nê הַשַּׁ֙עַר֙ the gate haš·ša·‘ar עַד־ as far as ‘aḏ- הַשְּׁבָרִ֔ים the quarries haš·šə·ḇā·rîm וַיַּכּ֖וּם and striking them down way·yak·kūm בַּמּוֹרָ֑ד on the slopes . bam·mō·w·rāḏ לְבַב־ So the hearts lə·ḇaḇ- הָעָ֖ם of the people hā·‘ām וַיִּמַּ֥ס melted way·yim·mas וַיְהִ֥י and became way·hî לְמָֽיִם׃ like water . lə·mā·yim
