אֲשֶׁר֩ ’ă·šer בְּעֵ֨בֶר vvv bə·‘ê·ḇer יָ֗מָּה west of yām·māh הַיַּרְדֵּ֜ן the Jordan hay·yar·dên וְכָל־ and all wə·ḵāl הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ the Canaanite hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer מַלְכֵ֤י kings mal·ḵê עַל־ along ‘al- הַיָּ֔ם the coast hay·yām אֵ֠ת - ’êṯ כִשְׁמֹ֣עַ heard ḵiš·mō·a‘ אֲשֶׁר־ how ’ă·šer- יְהוָ֜ה YHWH Yah·weh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הוֹבִ֨ישׁ had dried up hō·w·ḇîš מֵ֧י the waters mê הַיַּרְדֵּ֛ן of the Jordan hay·yar·dên מִפְּנֵ֥י before mip·pə·nê בְנֵֽי־ the Israelites ḇə·nê- יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל . . . yiś·rā·’êl עַד־ until ‘aḏ- עָבְרָנוּ they had crossed over , ʿå̄·ḇə·rå̄·nū לְבָבָ֗ם their hearts lə·ḇā·ḇām וַיִּמַּ֣ס melted way·yim·mas ר֔וּחַ and their spirits rū·aḥ וְלֹא־ failed wə·lō- הָ֨יָה . . . hā·yāh בָ֥ם ḇām עוֹד֙ - ‘ō·wḏ מִפְּנֵ֖י for fear of mip·pə·nê בְּנֵֽי־ the Israelites bə·nê- יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס . . . . yiś·rā·’êl Joshua 5:2 הַהִ֗יא At that ha·hî בָּעֵ֣ת time bā·‘êṯ יְהוָה֙ YHWH Yah·weh אָמַ֤ר said ’ā·mar אֶל־ to ’el- יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ Joshua , yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ עֲשֵׂ֥ה “ Make ‘ă·śêh לְךָ֖ lə·ḵā צֻרִ֑ים flint ṣu·rîm חַֽרְב֣וֹת knives ḥar·ḇō·wṯ מֹ֥ל and circumcise mōl אֶת־ - ’eṯ- בְּנֵֽי־ the sons bə·nê- יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiś·rā·’êl וְשׁ֛וּב once again wə·šūḇ שֵׁנִֽית׃ . . . . ” šê·nîṯ Joshua 5:3 יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ So Joshua yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ וַיַּעַשׂ־ made way·ya·‘aś- ל֥וֹ lōw צֻרִ֑ים flint ṣu·rîm חַֽרְב֣וֹת knives ḥar·ḇō·wṯ וַיָּ֙מָל֙ and circumcised way·yā·māl אֶת־ - ’eṯ- בְּנֵ֣י the sons bə·nê יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiś·rā·’êl אֶל־ at ’el- גִּבְעַ֖ת Gibeath-haaraloth giḇ·‘aṯ הָעֲרָלֽוֹת׃ . . . . hā·‘ă·rā·lō·wṯ Joshua 5:4 וְזֶ֥ה Now this wə·zeh הַדָּבָ֖ר is why had·dā·ḇār אֲשֶׁר־ - ’ă·šer- יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ Joshua yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ מָ֣ל circumcised them : māl כָּל־ All kāl- הָעָ֣ם those hā·‘ām הַיֹּצֵא֩ who came out hay·yō·ṣê מִמִּצְרַ֨יִם of Egypt — mim·miṣ·ra·yim הַזְּכָרִ֜ים - haz·zə·ḵā·rîm כֹּ֣ל׀ all kōl אַנְשֵׁ֣י the men ’an·šê הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה of war — ham·mil·ḥā·māh מֵ֤תוּ had died mê·ṯū בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ on the journey bad·de·reḵ בַמִּדְבָּר֙ in the wilderness ḇam·miḏ·bār בְּצֵאתָ֖ם after they had left bə·ṣê·ṯām מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ Egypt . mim·miṣ·rā·yim Joshua 5:5 כִּֽי־ Though kî- כָּל־ all kāl- הָעָ֖ם . . . hā·‘ām הַיֹּֽצְאִ֑ים who had come out hay·yō·ṣə·’îm הָי֔וּ were hā·yū מֻלִ֣ים circumcised , mu·lîm וְכָל־ none wə·ḵāl לֹא־ . . . lō- הָ֠עָם of those hā·‘ām
