Deuteronomy 25:2 וְהָיָ֛ה - wə·hā·yāh אִם־ If ’im- בִּ֥ן . . . bin הָרָשָׁ֑ע the guilty man hā·rā·šā‘ הַכּ֖וֹת deserves to be beaten , hak·kō·wṯ הַשֹּׁפֵט֙ the judge haš·šō·p̄êṭ וְהִפִּיל֤וֹ shall have him lie down wə·hip·pî·lōw וְהִכָּ֣הוּ and be flogged wə·hik·kā·hū לְפָנָ֔יו in his presence lə·p̄ā·nāw בְּמִסְפָּֽר׃ with the number bə·mis·pār כְּדֵ֥י of lashes kə·ḏê רִשְׁעָת֖וֹ his crime warrants . riš·‘ā·ṯōw Deuteronomy 25:3 יַכֶּ֖נּוּ He may receive yak·ken·nū לֹ֣א no lō יֹסִ֑יף more yō·sîp̄ אַרְבָּעִ֥ים than forty {lashes} , ’ar·bā·‘îm פֶּן־ lest pen- אָחִ֖יךָ your brother ’ā·ḥî·ḵā לְהַכֹּת֤וֹ be beaten lə·hak·kō·ṯōw יֹסִ֨יף any more yō·sîp̄ עַל־ than ‘al- אֵ֙לֶּה֙ that ’êl·leh מַכָּ֣ה . . . mak·kāh רַבָּ֔ה . . . rab·bāh וְנִקְלָ֥ה and be degraded wə·niq·lāh לְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ס in your sight . lə·‘ê·ne·ḵā Deuteronomy 25:4 לֹא־ Do not lō- תַחְסֹ֥ם muzzle ṯaḥ·sōm שׁ֖וֹר an ox šō·wr בְּדִישֽׁוֹ׃ס while it is treading out the grain . bə·ḏî·šōw Deuteronomy 25:5 כִּֽי־ When kî- אַחִ֜ים brothers ’a·ḥîm יֵשְׁב֨וּ dwell yê·šə·ḇū יַחְדָּ֗ו together yaḥ·dāw אַחַ֤ד and one ’a·ḥaḏ מֵהֶם֙ of them mê·hem וּמֵ֨ת dies ū·mêṯ אֵֽין־ without ’ên- ל֔וֹ lōw וּבֵ֣ן a son , ū·ḇên אֵֽשֶׁת־ the widow ’ê·šeṯ- הַמֵּ֛ת . . . ham·mêṯ לֹֽא־ must not lō- תִהְיֶ֧ה marry ṯih·yeh לְאִ֣ישׁ . . . lə·’îš זָ֑ר vvv zār הַח֖וּצָה outside [the family] . ha·ḥū·ṣāh יְבָמָהּ֙ Her husband’s brother yə·ḇā·māh וּלְקָחָ֥הּ is to take her ū·lə·qā·ḥāh ל֛וֹ as his lōw לְאִשָּׁ֖ה wife lə·’iš·šāh יָבֹ֣א vvv yā·ḇō עָלֶ֔יהָ vvv ‘ā·le·hā וְיִבְּמָֽהּ׃ and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law for her . wə·yib·bə·māh Deuteronomy 25:6 וְהָיָ֗ה - wə·hā·yāh הַבְּכוֹר֙ The first son hab·bə·ḵō·wr אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer תֵּלֵ֔ד she bears tê·lêḏ יָק֕וּם will carry yā·qūm עַל־ on ‘al- שֵׁ֥ם the name šêm הַמֵּ֑ת of the dead ham·mêṯ אָחִ֖יו brother , ’ā·ḥîw שְׁמ֖וֹ so that his name šə·mōw וְלֹֽא־ will not wə·lō- יִמָּחֶ֥ה be blotted out yim·mā·ḥeh מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ from Israel . mî·yiś·rā·’êl Deuteronomy 25:7 וְאִם־ But if wə·’im- הָאִ֔ישׁ the man hā·’îš לֹ֤א does not lō יַחְפֹּץ֙ want yaḥ·pōṣ לָקַ֖חַת to marry lā·qa·ḥaṯ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יְבִמְתּ֑וֹ his brother’s widow , yə·ḇim·tōw יְבִמְתּ֨וֹ she yə·ḇim·tōw וְעָלְתָה֩ is to go wə·‘ā·lə·ṯāh אֶל־ to ’el- הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים the elders haz·zə·qê·nîm הַשַּׁ֜עְרָה at the city gate haš·ša‘·rāh וְאָֽמְרָה֙ and say , wə·’ā·mə·rāh יְבָמִ֜י “ My husband’s brother yə·ḇā·mî מֵאֵ֨ין refuses mê·’ên
