הַאַ֣ף “ Will You really ha·’ap̄ תִּסְפֶּ֔ה sweep away tis·peh צַדִּ֖יק the righteous ṣad·dîq עִם־ with ‘im- רָשָֽׁע׃ the wicked ? rā·šā‘ Genesis 18:24 אוּלַ֥י What if ’ū·lay יֵ֛שׁ there are yêš חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים fifty ḥă·miš·šîm צַדִּיקִ֖ם righteous ones ṣad·dî·qim בְּת֣וֹךְ in bə·ṯō·wḵ הָעִ֑יר the city ? hā·‘îr הַאַ֤ף Will You really ha·’ap̄ תִּסְפֶּה֙ sweep it away tis·peh וְלֹא־ and not wə·lō- תִשָּׂ֣א spare ṯiś·śā לַמָּק֔וֹם the place lam·mā·qō·wm לְמַ֛עַן for the sake of lə·ma·‘an חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים the fifty ḥă·miš·šîm הַצַּדִּיקִ֖ם righteous ones haṣ·ṣad·dî·qim אֲשֶׁ֥ר who ’ă·šer בְּקִרְבָּֽהּ׃ are there ? bə·qir·bāh Genesis 18:25 חָלִ֨לָה Far be it ḥā·li·lāh לְּךָ֜ from You lə·ḵā מֵעֲשֹׂ֣ת׀ to do mê·‘ă·śōṯ הַזֶּ֗ה such haz·zeh כַּדָּבָ֣ר a thing — kad·dā·ḇār לְהָמִ֤ית to kill lə·hā·mîṯ צַדִּיק֙ the righteous ṣad·dîq עִם־ with ‘im- רָשָׁ֔ע the wicked , rā·šā‘ כַצַּדִּ֖יק so that the righteous ḵaṣ·ṣad·dîq כָּרָשָׁ֑ע and the wicked kā·rā·šā‘ וְהָיָ֥ה are treated alike . wə·hā·yāh חָלִ֣לָה Far be it ḥā·li·lāh לָּ֔ךְ from You ! lāḵ לֹ֥א Will not lō הֲשֹׁפֵט֙ the Judge hă·šō·p̄êṭ כָּל־ of all kāl- הָאָ֔רֶץ the earth hā·’ā·reṣ יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה do ya·‘ă·śeh מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ what is right ? ” miš·pāṭ Genesis 18:26 יְהוָ֔ה So YHWH Yah·weh וַיֹּ֣אמֶר replied , way·yō·mer אִם־ “ If ’im- אֶמְצָ֥א I find ’em·ṣā חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים fifty ḥă·miš·šîm צַדִּיקִ֖ם righteous ones ṣad·dî·qim בְּת֣וֹךְ within bə·ṯō·wḵ הָעִ֑יר the city hā·‘îr בִסְדֹ֛ם of Sodom , ḇis·ḏōm בַּעֲבוּרָֽם׃ on their account ba·‘ă·ḇū·rām וְנָשָׂ֥אתִי I will spare wə·nā·śā·ṯî לְכָל־ the whole lə·ḵāl הַמָּק֖וֹם place . ” ham·mā·qō·wm Genesis 18:27 אַבְרָהָ֖ם Then Abraham ’aḇ·rā·hām וַיֹּאמַ֑ר vvv way·yō·mar וַיַּ֥עַן answered , way·ya·‘an הִנֵּה־ “ Now that hin·nêh- נָ֤א . . . nā הוֹאַ֙לְתִּי֙ I have ventured hō·w·’al·tî לְדַבֵּ֣ר to speak lə·ḏab·bêr אֶל־ to ’el- אֲדֹנָ֔י the Lord — ’ă·ḏō·nāy וְאָנֹכִ֖י though I wə·’ā·nō·ḵî עָפָ֥ר am but dust ‘ā·p̄ār וָאֵֽפֶר׃ and ashes — wā·’ê·p̄er Genesis 18:28 א֠וּלַי suppose ’ū·lay חֲמִשִּׁ֤ים the fifty ḥă·miš·šîm הַצַּדִּיקִם֙ righteous ones haṣ·ṣad·dî·qim יַחְסְר֞וּן lack yaḥ·sə·rūn חֲמִשָּׁ֔ה five . ḥă·miš·šāh הֲתַשְׁחִ֥ית Will You destroy hă·ṯaš·ḥîṯ כָּל־ the whole kāl- הָעִ֑יר city hā·‘îr בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה for the lack of five ? ” ba·ḥă·miš·šāh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ He replied , way·yō·mer אִם־ “ If ’im- אֶמְצָ֣א I find ’em·ṣā אַרְבָּעִ֖ים forty-five ’ar·bā·‘îm וַחֲמִשָּֽׁה׃ . . . wa·ḥă·miš·šāh שָׁ֔ם there , šām לֹ֣א I will not lō אַשְׁחִ֔ית destroy [it] . ” ’aš·ḥîṯ
