מַהֲלַ֖ךְ journey . ma·hă·laḵ Jonah 3:4 אֶחָ֑ד On the first ’e·ḥāḏ י֣וֹם day yō·wm מַהֲלַ֖ךְ of his journey , ma·hă·laḵ יוֹנָה֙ Jonah yō·w·nāh לָב֣וֹא . . . lā·ḇō·w וַיָּ֤חֶל set out way·yā·ḥel בָעִ֔יר into the city ḇā·‘îr וַיִּקְרָא֙ and proclaimed way·yiq·rā וַיֹּאמַ֔ר . . . , way·yō·mar אַרְבָּעִ֣ים “ Forty ’ar·bā·‘îm ע֚וֹד more ‘ō·wḏ י֔וֹם days yō·wm וְנִֽינְוֵ֖ה and Nineveh wə·nî·nə·wêh נֶהְפָּֽכֶת׃ will be overturned ! ” neh·pā·ḵeṯ Jonah 3:5 אַנְשֵׁ֥י vvv ’an·šê נִֽינְוֵ֖ה And the Ninevites nî·nə·wêh וַֽיַּאֲמִ֛ינוּ believed way·ya·’ă·mî·nū בֵּֽאלֹהִ֑ים God . bê·lō·hîm וַיִּקְרְאוּ־ They proclaimed way·yiq·rə·’ū- צוֹם֙ a fast ṣō·wm וַיִּלְבְּשׁ֣וּ and dressed way·yil·bə·šū שַׂקִּ֔ים in sackcloth , śaq·qîm מִגְּדוֹלָ֖ם from the greatest mig·gə·ḏō·w·lām וְעַד־ of them to wə·‘aḏ- קְטַנָּֽם׃ the least . qə·ṭan·nām Jonah 3:6 הַדָּבָר֙ When word had·dā·ḇār אֶל־ . . . ’el- וַיִּגַּ֤ע reached way·yig·ga‘ מֶ֣לֶך the king mɛ·lɛḵ נִֽינְוֵ֔ה of Nineveh , nî·nə·wêh וַיָּ֙קָם֙ he got up way·yā·qām מִכִּסְא֔וֹ from his throne , mik·kis·’ōw וַיַּעֲבֵ֥ר took off way·ya·‘ă·ḇêr אַדַּרְתּ֖וֹ his royal robe , ’ad·dar·tōw וַיְכַ֣ס covered [himself] way·ḵas שַׂ֔ק with sackcloth , śaq וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב and sat way·yê·šeḇ עַל־ . . . ‘al- מֵֽעָלָ֑יו in mê·‘ā·lāw הָאֵֽפֶר׃ ashes . hā·’ê·p̄er Jonah 3:7 וַיַּזְעֵ֗ק Then he issued a proclamation way·yaz·‘êq וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ . . . way·yō·mer בְּנִֽינְוֵ֔ה in Nineveh : bə·nî·nə·wêh מִטַּ֧עַם “ By the decree miṭ·ṭa·‘am הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ of the king ham·me·leḵ וּגְדֹלָ֖יו and his nobles ū·ḡə·ḏō·lāw לֵאמֹ֑ר . . . : lê·mōr אַֽל־ Let no ’al- הָאָדָ֨ם man hā·’ā·ḏām וְהַבְּהֵמָ֜ה or beast , wə·hab·bə·hê·māh הַבָּקָ֣ר herd hab·bā·qār וְהַצֹּ֗אן or flock , wə·haṣ·ṣōn יִטְעֲמוּ֙ taste yiṭ·‘ă·mū מְא֔וּמָה anything at all . mə·’ū·māh אַ֨ל־ They must not ’al- יִרְע֔וּ eat yir·‘ū יִשְׁתּֽוּ׃ or drink yiš·tū וּמַ֖יִם . . . . ū·ma·yim אַל־ . . . ’al- Jonah 3:8 הָֽאָדָם֙ Furthermore, let both man hā·’ā·ḏām וְהַבְּהֵמָ֔ה and beast wə·hab·bə·hê·māh וְיִתְכַּסּ֣וּ be covered wə·yiṯ·kas·sū שַׂקִּ֗ים with sackcloth , śaq·qîm וְיִקְרְא֥וּ and have everyone call out wə·yiq·rə·’ū בְּחָזְקָ֑ה earnestly bə·ḥā·zə·qāh אֶל־ to ’el- אֱלֹהִ֖ים God . ’ĕ·lō·hîm אִ֚ישׁ Let each one ’îš וְיָשֻׁ֗בוּ turn wə·yā·šu·ḇū וּמִן־ from ū·min- הָֽרָעָ֔ה his evil hā·rā·‘āh מִדַּרְכּ֣וֹ ways mid·dar·kōw הֶחָמָ֖ס and from the violence he·ḥā·mās אֲשֶׁ֥ר - ’ă·šer בְּכַפֵּיהֶֽם׃ in his hands . bə·ḵap·pê·hem Jonah 3:9 מִֽי־ Who mî- יוֹדֵ֣עַ knows ? yō·w·ḏê·a‘ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים God hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm יָשׁ֔וּב may turn yā·šūḇ וְנִחַ֖ם and relent ; wə·ni·ḥam וְשָׁ֛ב He may turn wə·šāḇ
