יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל . . . yiś·rā·’êl רִ֣יב׀ quarreled , rîḇ וְעַ֨ל and because wə·‘al נַסֹּתָ֤ם they tested nas·sō·ṯām אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יְהוָה֙ YHWH , Yah·weh לֵאמֹ֔ר saying , lê·mōr הֲיֵ֧שׁ “ Is hă·yêš יְהוָ֛ה YHWH Yah·weh בְּקִרְבֵּ֖נוּ among us bə·qir·bê·nū אִם־ or ’im- אָֽיִן׃פ not ? ” ’ā·yin Exodus 17:8 עֲמָלֵ֑ק After this, the Amalekites ‘ă·mā·lêq וַיָּבֹ֖א came way·yā·ḇō וַיִּלָּ֥חֶם and attacked way·yil·lā·ḥem עִם־ . . . ‘im- יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל the Israelites yiś·rā·’êl בִּרְפִידִֽם׃ at Rephidim . bir·p̄î·ḏim Exodus 17:9 מֹשֶׁ֤ה So Moses mō·šeh וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said way·yō·mer אֶל־ to ’el- יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ Joshua , yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ בְּחַר־ “ Choose bə·ḥar- לָ֣נוּ vvv lā·nū אֲנָשִׁ֔ים some of our men ’ă·nā·šîm וְצֵ֖א and go out wə·ṣê הִלָּחֵ֣ם to fight hil·lā·ḥêm בַּעֲמָלֵ֑ק the Amalekites . ba·‘ă·mā·lêq מָחָ֗ר Tomorrow mā·ḥār אָנֹכִ֤י I ’ā·nō·ḵî נִצָּב֙ will stand niṣ·ṣāḇ עַל־ on ‘al- רֹ֣אשׁ the hilltop rōš הַגִּבְעָ֔ה . . . hag·giḇ·‘āh וּמַטֵּ֥ה with the staff ū·maṭ·ṭêh הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים of God hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm בְּיָדִֽי׃ in my hand . ” bə·yā·ḏî Exodus 17:10 יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ Joshua yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ וַיַּ֣עַשׂ did way·ya·‘aś כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר as ka·’ă·šer מֹשֶׁ֔ה Moses mō·šeh אָֽמַר־ had instructed ’ā·mar- לוֹ֙ him lōw לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם and fought lə·hil·lā·ḥêm בַּעֲמָלֵ֑ק against the Amalekites , ba·‘ă·mā·lêq וּמֹשֶׁה֙ while Moses , ū·mō·šeh אַהֲרֹ֣ן Aaron , ’a·hă·rōn וְח֔וּר and Hur wə·ḥūr עָל֖וּ went up ‘ā·lū רֹ֥אשׁ to the top rōš הַגִּבְעָֽה׃ of the hill . hag·giḇ·‘āh Exodus 17:11 וְהָיָ֗ה - wə·hā·yāh כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר As long as ka·’ă·šer מֹשֶׁ֛ה Moses mō·šeh יָרִ֥ים held up yā·rîm יָד֖וֹ his hands , yā·ḏōw יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel yiś·rā·’êl וְגָבַ֣ר prevailed ; wə·ḡā·ḇar וְכַאֲשֶׁ֥ר but when wə·ḵa·’ă·šer יָנִ֛יחַ he lowered yā·nî·aḥ יָד֖וֹ [them] , yā·ḏōw עֲמָלֵֽק׃ Amalek ‘ă·mā·lêq וְגָבַ֥ר prevailed . wə·ḡā·ḇar Exodus 17:12 מֹשֶׁה֙ When Moses’ mō·šeh וִידֵ֤י hands wî·ḏê כְּבֵדִ֔ים grew heavy , kə·ḇê·ḏîm וַיִּקְחוּ־ they took way·yiq·ḥū- אֶ֛בֶן a stone ’e·ḇen וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ and put way·yā·śî·mū תַחְתָּ֖יו it under him , ṯaḥ·tāw וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב and he sat way·yê·šeḇ עָלֶ֑יהָ on it . ‘ā·le·hā וְאַהֲרֹ֨ן Then Aaron wə·’a·hă·rōn וְח֜וּר and Hur wə·ḥūr תָּֽמְכ֣וּ held tā·mə·ḵū בְיָדָ֗יו his hands up , ḇə·yā·ḏāw מִזֶּ֤ה one miz·zeh אֶחָד֙ on each ’e·ḥāḏ וּמִזֶּ֣ה . . . ū·miz·zeh אֶחָ֔ד side , ’e·ḥāḏ יָדָ֛יו so that his hands yā·ḏāw וַיְהִ֥י remained way·hî אֱמוּנָ֖ה steady ’ĕ·mū·nāh עַד־ until ‘aḏ- הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ the sun haš·šā·meš
