וַיֹּ֤אמֶר replied . way·yō·mer לָהֶם֙ lā·hem מַה־ “ Why mah- תְּנַסּ֖וּן do you test tə·nas·sūn אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יְהוָֽה׃ YHWH ? ” Yah·weh Exodus 17:3 הָעָם֙ But the people hā·‘ām וַיִּצְמָ֨א thirsted way·yiṣ·mā לַמַּ֔יִם for water lam·ma·yim שָׁ֤ם there , šām וַיָּ֥לֶן and they grumbled way·yā·len הָעָ֖ם . . . hā·‘ām עַל־ against ‘al- מֹשֶׁ֑ה Moses mō·šeh וַיֹּ֗אמֶר . . . : way·yō·mer לָ֤מָּה “ Why lām·māh זֶּה֙ - zeh הֶעֱלִיתָ֣נוּ have you brought us he·‘ĕ·lî·ṯā·nū מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם out of Egypt — mim·miṣ·ra·yim לְהָמִ֥ית to make lə·hā·mîṯ אֹתִ֛י us ’ō·ṯî וְאֶת־ and wə·’eṯ- בָּנַ֥י our children bā·nay וְאֶת־ - wə·’eṯ- מִקְנַ֖י and livestock miq·nay בַּצָּמָֽא׃ {die} of thirst ? ” baṣ·ṣā·mā Exodus 17:4 מֹשֶׁה֙ Then Moses mō·šeh וַיִּצְעַ֤ק cried out way·yiṣ·‘aq אֶל־ to ’el- יְהוָ֣ה YHWH , Yah·weh לֵאמֹ֔ר . . . lê·mōr מָ֥ה “ What māh אֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה should I do ’e·‘ĕ·śeh הַזֶּ֑ה with these haz·zeh לָעָ֣ם people ? lā·‘ām ע֥וֹד A little more ‘ō·wḏ מְעַ֖ט . . . mə·‘aṭ וּסְקָלֻֽנִי׃ and they will stone me ! ” ū·sə·qā·lu·nî Exodus 17:5 יְהוָ֜ה And YHWH Yah·weh וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said way·yō·mer אֶל־ to ’el- מֹשֶׁ֗ה Moses , mō·šeh עֲבֹר֙ “ Walk on ‘ă·ḇōr לִפְנֵ֣י ahead of lip̄·nê הָעָ֔ם the people hā·‘ām וְקַ֥ח and take wə·qaḥ מִזִּקְנֵ֣י some of the elders miz·ziq·nê יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel yiś·rā·’êl אִתְּךָ֖ with you . ’it·tə·ḵā קַ֥ח Take along qaḥ בְּיָדְךָ֖ in your hand bə·yā·ḏə·ḵā וּמַטְּךָ֗ the staff ū·maṭ·ṭə·ḵā אֲשֶׁ֨ר with which ’ă·šer הִכִּ֤יתָ you struck hik·kî·ṯā בּוֹ֙ bōw אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַיְאֹ֔ר the Nile , hay·’ōr וְהָלָֽכְתָּ׃ and go . wə·hā·lā·ḵə·tā Exodus 17:6 הִנְנִ֣י Behold , hin·nî עֹמֵד֩ I will stand ‘ō·mêḏ שָּׁ֥ם׀ there šām לְפָנֶ֨יךָ before lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā עַֽל־ you ‘al- הַצּוּר֮ by the rock haṣ·ṣūr בְּחֹרֵב֒ at Horeb . bə·ḥō·rêḇ וְהִכִּ֣יתָ And when you strike wə·hik·kî·ṯā בַצּ֗וּר the rock , ḇaṣ·ṣūr מַ֖יִם water ma·yim וְיָצְא֥וּ will come out wə·yā·ṣə·’ū מִמֶּ֛נּוּ of it mim·men·nū הָעָ֑ם for the people hā·‘ām וְשָׁתָ֣ה to drink . ” wə·šā·ṯāh מֹשֶׁ֔ה So Moses mō·šeh וַיַּ֤עַשׂ did way·ya·‘aś כֵּן֙ this kên לְעֵינֵ֖י in the sight lə·‘ê·nê זִקְנֵ֥י of the elders ziq·nê יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel . yiś·rā·’êl Exodus 17:7 וַיִּקְרָא֙ He named way·yiq·rā שֵׁ֣ם . . . šêm הַמָּק֔וֹם the place ham·mā·qō·wm מַסָּ֖ה Massah mas·sāh וּמְרִיבָ֑ה and Meribah ū·mə·rî·ḇāh עַל־ because ‘al- בְּנֵ֣י the Israelites bə·nê
