מֶ֣ה “ Why meh הָיָ֔ה were hā·yāh הָרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים the old hā·ri·šō·nîm הָי֥וּ . . . hā·yū שֶׁ֤הַיָּמִים֙ days še·hay·yā·mîm טוֹבִ֖ים better ṭō·w·ḇîm מֵאֵ֑לֶּה than these ? ” mê·’êl·leh כִּ֛י For kî לֹ֥א vvv lō מֵחָכְמָ֖ה it is unwise mê·ḥā·ḵə·māh שָׁאַ֥לְתָּ of you to ask šā·’al·tā עַל־ about ‘al- זֶֽה׃ this . zeh Ecclesiastes 7:11 חָכְמָ֖ה Wisdom , ḥāḵ·māh עִֽם־ like ‘im- נַחֲלָ֑ה an inheritance , na·ḥă·lāh טוֹבָ֥ה [is] good , ṭō·w·ḇāh וְיֹתֵ֖ר and it benefits wə·yō·ṯêr לְרֹאֵ֥י those who see lə·rō·’ê הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ the sun . haš·šā·meš Ecclesiastes 7:12 כִּ֛י For kî הַֽחָכְמָ֖ה wisdom ha·ḥā·ḵə·māh בְּצֵ֥ל - , bə·ṣêl הַכָּ֑סֶף like money , hak·kā·sep̄ בְּצֵ֣ל [is] a shelter , bə·ṣêl וְיִתְר֣וֹן and the advantage wə·yiṯ·rō·wn דַּ֔עַת of knowledge da·‘aṯ הַֽחָכְמָ֖ה is that wisdom ha·ḥā·ḵə·māh תְּחַיֶּ֥ה preserves the life tə·ḥay·yeh בְעָלֶֽיהָ׃ of its owner . ḇə·‘ā·le·hā Ecclesiastes 7:13 רְאֵ֖ה Consider rə·’êh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה the work ma·‘ă·śêh הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים of God : hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm כִּ֣י - kî מִ֤י Who mî יוּכַל֙ can yū·ḵal לְתַקֵּ֔ן straighten lə·ṯaq·qên אֵ֖ת - ’êṯ אֲשֶׁ֥ר what ’ă·šer עִוְּתֽוֹ׃ He has bent ? ‘iw·wə·ṯōw Ecclesiastes 7:14 בְּי֤וֹם In the day bə·yō·wm טוֹבָה֙ of prosperity , ṭō·w·ḇāh הֱיֵ֣ה be hĕ·yêh בְט֔וֹב joyful , ḇə·ṭō·wḇ וּבְי֥וֹם but in the day ū·ḇə·yō·wm רָעָ֖ה of adversity , rā·‘āh רְאֵ֑ה consider this rə·’êh גַּ֣ם . . . gam אֶת־ - : ’eṯ- הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים God hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm עָשָׂ֣ה has made ‘ā·śāh זֶ֤ה one [of these] zeh לְעֻמַּת־ along with lə·‘um·maṯ- זֶה֙ the other , zeh עַל־ so that ‘al- דִּבְרַ֗ת . . . diḇ·raṯ הָֽאָדָ֛ם a man hā·’ā·ḏām שֶׁלֹּ֨א cannot šel·lō יִמְצָ֧א discover yim·ṣā מְאֽוּמָה׃ anything mə·’ū·māh אַחֲרָ֖יו that will come after him . ’a·ḥă·rāw Ecclesiastes 7:15 אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הֶבְלִ֑י In my futile heḇ·lî בִּימֵ֣י life bî·mê רָאִ֖יתִי I have seen rā·’î·ṯî הַכֹּ֥ל both of these : hak·kōl יֵ֤שׁ - yêš צַדִּיק֙ A righteous man ṣad·dîq אֹבֵ֣ד perishing ’ō·ḇêḏ בְּצִדְק֔וֹ in his righteousness , bə·ṣiḏ·qōw וְיֵ֣שׁ [and] wə·yêš רָשָׁ֔ע a wicked man rā·šā‘ מַאֲרִ֖יךְ living long ma·’ă·rîḵ בְּרָעָתֽוֹ׃ in his wickedness . bə·rā·‘ā·ṯōw Ecclesiastes 7:16 אַל־ Do not ’al- תְּהִ֤י be tə·hî הַרְבֵּ֔ה overly har·bêh צַדִּיק֙ righteous , ṣad·dîq וְאַל־ and do not wə·’al- יוֹתֵ֑ר make yourself too yō·w·ṯêr תִּתְחַכַּ֖ם wise . tiṯ·ḥak·kam
