שָֽׁקֶר׃ to [these] lies šā·qer בְּדִבְרֵי־ . . . . ” bə·ḏiḇ·rê- Exodus 5:10 נֹגְשֵׂ֤י So the taskmasters nō·ḡə·śê וְשֹׁ֣טְרָ֔יו and foremen wə·šō·ṭə·rāw הָעָם֙ of the people hā·‘ām וַיֵּ֨צְא֜וּ went out way·yê·ṣə·’ū וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ and said way·yō·mə·rū אֶל־ to ’el- הָעָ֖ם them , hā·‘ām כֹּ֚ה “ This is what kōh אָמַ֣ר . . . ’ā·mar פַּרְעֹ֔ה Pharaoh par·‘ōh לֵאמֹ֑ר says : lê·mōr אֵינֶ֛נִּי ‘ I am no longer ’ê·nen·nî נֹתֵ֥ן giving nō·ṯên לָכֶ֖ם you lā·ḵem תֶּֽבֶן׃ straw . te·ḇen Exodus 5:11 אַתֶּ֗ם - ’at·tem לְכ֨וּ Go lə·ḵū קְח֤וּ and get qə·ḥū לָכֶם֙ your own lā·ḵem תֶּ֔בֶן straw te·ḇen מֵאֲשֶׁ֖ר wherever mê·’ă·šer תִּמְצָ֑אוּ you can find it ; tim·ṣā·’ū כִּ֣י but kî מֵעֲבֹדַתְכֶ֖ם your workload mê·‘ă·ḇō·ḏaṯ·ḵem אֵ֥ין will in no way ’ên דָּבָֽר׃ dā·ḇār נִגְרָ֛ע be reduced . ’” niḡ·rā‘ Exodus 5:12 הָעָ֖ם So the people hā·‘ām וַיָּ֥פֶץ scattered way·yā·p̄eṣ בְּכָל־ all over bə·ḵāl אֶ֣רֶץ the land ’e·reṣ מִצְרָ֑יִם of Egypt miṣ·rā·yim לְקֹשֵׁ֥שׁ to gather lə·qō·šêš קַ֖שׁ stubble qaš לַתֶּֽבֶן׃ for straw . lat·te·ḇen Exodus 5:13 וְהַנֹּגְשִׂ֖ים The taskmasters wə·han·nō·ḡə·śîm אָצִ֣ים kept pressing them , ’ā·ṣîm לֵאמֹ֑ר saying , lê·mōr כַּלּ֤וּ “ Fulfill kal·lū דְּבַר־ your quota də·ḇar- מַעֲשֵׂיכֶם֙ . . . ma·‘ă·śê·ḵem י֣וֹם each day yō·wm בְּיוֹמ֔וֹ . . . , bə·yō·w·mōw כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר just as you did when ka·’ă·šer הַתֶּֽבֶן׃ straw hat·te·ḇen בִּהְי֥וֹת was provided . ” bih·yō·wṯ Exodus 5:14 בְּנֵ֣י Then the Israelite bə·nê יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל . . . yiś·rā·’êl שֹֽׁטְרֵי֙ foremen , šō·ṭə·rê אֲשֶׁר־ whom ’ă·šer- פַרְעֹ֖ה Pharaoh’s p̄ar·‘ōh נֹגְשֵׂ֥י taskmasters nō·ḡə·śê שָׂ֣מוּ had set śā·mū עֲלֵהֶ֔ם over the people , ‘ă·lê·hem וַיֻּכּ֗וּ were beaten way·yuk·kū לֵאמֹ֑ר and asked , lê·mōr מַדּ֡וּעַ “ Why mad·dū·a‘ לֹא֩ have you not lō כִלִּיתֶ֨ם fulfilled ḵil·lî·ṯem חָקְכֶ֤ם your quota ḥā·qə·ḵem לִלְבֹּן֙ of bricks lil·bōn כִּתְמ֣וֹל yesterday kiṯ·mō·wl גַּם־ or today gam- הַיּֽוֹם׃ . . . , hay·yō·wm תְּמ֖וֹל as you did before tə·mō·wl גַּם־ . . . gam- שִׁלְשֹׁ֔ם . . . ? ” šil·šōm Exodus 5:15 בְּנֵ֣י So the Israelite bə·nê יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל . . . yiś·rā·’êl שֹֽׁטְרֵי֙ foremen šō·ṭə·rê וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ went way·yā·ḇō·’ū וַיִּצְעֲק֥וּ and appealed way·yiṣ·‘ă·qū אֶל־ to ’el- פַּרְעֹ֖ה Pharaoh : par·‘ōh לֵאמֹ֑ר . . . lê·mōr לָ֧מָּה “ Why lām·māh תַעֲשֶׂ֦ה are you treating ṯa·‘ă·śeh לַעֲבָדֶֽיךָ׃ your servants la·‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā כֹ֖ה this way ? ḵōh
