Proverbs 17:1 ט֤וֹב Better ṭō·wḇ חֲ֭רֵבָה a dry ḥă·rê·ḇāh פַּ֣ת morsel paṯ וְשַׁלְוָה־ in quietness wə·šal·wāh- בָ֑הּ ḇāh מִ֝בַּ֗יִת than a house mib·ba·yiṯ מָלֵ֥א full of mā·lê זִבְחֵי־ feasting ziḇ·ḥê- רִֽיב׃ with strife . rîḇ Proverbs 17:2 מַשְׂכִּ֗יל A wise maś·kîl עֶֽבֶד־ servant ‘e·ḇeḏ- יִ֭מְשֹׁל will rule over yim·šōl מֵבִ֑ישׁ a disgraceful mê·ḇîš בְּבֵ֣ן son bə·ḇên יַחֲלֹ֥ק and share ya·ḥă·lōq נַחֲלָֽה׃ his inheritance na·ḥă·lāh וּבְת֥וֹךְ as one of ū·ḇə·ṯō·wḵ אַ֝חִ֗ים the brothers . ’a·ḥîm Proverbs 17:3 מַצְרֵ֣ף A crucible maṣ·rêp̄ לַ֭כֶּסֶף for silver lak·ke·sep̄ וְכ֣וּר and a furnace wə·ḵūr לַזָּהָ֑ב for gold , laz·zā·hāḇ יְהוָֽה׃ but YHWH Yah·weh וּבֹחֵ֖ן is the tester ū·ḇō·ḥên לִבּ֣וֹת of hearts . lib·bō·wṯ Proverbs 17:4 מֵ֭רַע A wicked man mê·ra‘ מַקְשִׁ֣יב listens maq·šîḇ עַל־ to ‘al- אָ֑וֶן evil ’ā·wen שְׂפַת־ lips ; śə·p̄aṯ- שֶׁ֥קֶר a liar še·qer מֵ֝זִין gives ear mê·zîn עַל־ to ‘al- הַוֺּֽת׃ a destructive haw·wōṯ לְשׁ֥וֹן tongue . lə·šō·wn Proverbs 17:5 לֹעֵ֣ג He who mocks lō·‘êḡ לָ֭רָשׁ the poor lā·rāš חֵרֵ֣ף insults ḥê·rêp̄ עֹשֵׂ֑הוּ their Maker ; ‘ō·śê·hū שָׂמֵ֥חַ whoever gloats śā·mê·aḥ לְ֝אֵ֗יד over calamity lə·’êḏ לֹ֣א will not lō יִנָּקֶֽה׃ go unpunished . yin·nā·qeh Proverbs 17:6 בְּנֵ֣י Grandchildren bə·nê בָנִ֑ים . . . ḇā·nîm עֲטֶ֣רֶת are the crown ‘ă·ṭe·reṯ זְ֭קֵנִים of the aged , zə·qê·nîm וְתִפְאֶ֖רֶת and the glory wə·ṯip̄·’e·reṯ בָּנִ֣ים of a son bā·nîm אֲבוֹתָֽם׃ is his father . ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām Proverbs 17:7 יֶ֑תֶר Eloquent ye·ṯer שְׂפַת־ words śə·p̄aṯ- לֹא־ are unfit lō- נָאוָ֣ה . . . nā·wāh לְנָבָ֣ל for a fool ; lə·nā·ḇāl אַ֝֗ף how much worse ’ap̄ כִּֽי־ . . . kî- שָֽׁקֶר׃ are lying šā·qer שְׂפַת־ lips śə·p̄aṯ- לְנָדִ֥יב to a ruler ! lə·nā·ḏîḇ Proverbs 17:8 הַ֭שֹּׁחַד A bribe haš·šō·ḥaḏ חֵ֣ן is a charm ḥên אֶֽבֶן־ . . . ’e·ḇen- בְּעֵינֵ֣י to bə·‘ê·nê בְעָלָ֑יו its giver ; ḇə·‘ā·lāw אֶֽל־ wherever ’el- כָּל־ . . . kāl- אֲשֶׁ֖ר - ’ă·šer יִפְנֶ֣ה he turns , yip̄·neh יַשְׂכִּֽיל׃ he succeeds . yaś·kîl Proverbs 17:9 מְֽכַסֶּה־ Whoever conceals mə·ḵas·seh- פֶּ֭שַׁע an offense pe·ša‘ מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ promotes mə·ḇaq·qêš אַהֲבָ֑ה love , ’a·hă·ḇāh וְשֹׁנֶ֥ה but he who brings it up wə·šō·neh בְ֝דָבָ֗ר . . . ḇə·ḏā·ḇār
