בִהְי֨וֹת . . . ḇih·yō·wṯ הַיֶּ֜לֶד while the child hay·ye·leḏ חַ֗י was alive , ḥay דִּבַּ֤רְנוּ we spoke dib·bar·nū אֵלָיו֙ to him , ’ê·lāw וְלֹא־ and he would not wə·lō- שָׁמַ֣ע listen to us . šā·ma‘ בְּקוֹלֵ֔נוּ . . . bə·qō·w·lê·nū וְאֵ֨יךְ So how wə·’êḵ נֹאמַ֥ר can we tell nō·mar אֵלָ֛יו him ’ê·lāw הַיֶּ֖לֶד the child hay·ye·leḏ מֵ֥ת is dead ? mêṯ וְעָשָׂ֥ה He may even harm himself wə·‘ā·śāh רָעָֽה׃ . . . . ” rā·‘āh 2 Samuel 12:19 דָּוִ֗ד When David dā·wiḏ וַיַּ֣רְא saw way·yar כִּ֤י that kî עֲבָדָיו֙ his servants ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw מִֽתְלַחֲשִׁ֔ים were whispering to one another , miṯ·la·ḥă·šîm דָּוִ֖ד he dā·wiḏ וַיָּ֥בֶן perceived way·yā·ḇen כִּ֣י that kî הַיָּ֑לֶד the child hay·yā·leḏ מֵ֣ת was dead . mêṯ דָּוִ֧ד So he dā·wiḏ אֶל־ . . . ’el- וַיֹּ֨אמֶר asked way·yō·mer עֲבָדָ֛יו his servants , ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw הַיֶּ֖לֶד “ Is the child hay·ye·leḏ הֲמֵ֥ת dead ? ” hă·mêṯ מֵֽת׃ “ He is dead , ” mêṯ וַיֹּ֥אמְרוּ they replied . way·yō·mə·rū 2 Samuel 12:20 דָּוִ֨ד Then David dā·wiḏ וַיָּקָם֩ got up way·yā·qām מֵהָאָ֜רֶץ from the ground , mê·hā·’ā·reṣ וַיִּרְחַ֣ץ washed way·yir·ḥaṣ וַיָּ֗סֶךְ and anointed himself , way·yā·seḵ וַיְחַלֵּף֙ changed way·ḥal·lêp̄ שִׂמְלָתוֹ his clothes , śim·lå̄·ṯō וַיָּבֹ֥א and went into way·yā·ḇō בֵית־ the house ḇêṯ- יְהוָ֖ה of YHWH Yah·weh וַיִּשְׁתָּ֑חוּ and worshiped . way·yiš·tā·ḥū וַיָּבֹא֙ Then he went way·yā·ḇō אֶל־ to ’el- בֵּית֔וֹ his own house , bê·ṯōw וַיִּשְׁאַ֕ל and at his request way·yiš·’al וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ they set way·yā·śî·mū לֶ֖חֶם food le·ḥem ל֛וֹ before him , lōw וַיֹּאכַֽל׃ and he ate . way·yō·ḵal 2 Samuel 12:21 מָֽה־ “ What [is] māh- הַדָּבָ֥ר had·dā·ḇār הַזֶּ֖ה this haz·zeh אֲשֶׁ֣ר ’ă·šer עָשִׂ֑יתָה you have done ? ” ‘ā·śî·ṯāh עֲבָדָיו֙ his servants ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw אֵלָ֔יו . . . ’ê·lāw וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ asked . way·yō·mə·rū בַּעֲב֞וּר “ While ba·‘ă·ḇūr הַיֶּ֤לֶד the child hay·ye·leḏ חַי֙ was alive , ḥay צַ֣מְתָּ you fasted ṣam·tā וַתֵּ֔בְךְּ and wept , wat·tê·ḇək וְכַֽאֲשֶׁר֙ but when wə·ḵa·’ă·šer הַיֶּ֔לֶד he hay·ye·leḏ מֵ֣ת died , mêṯ קַ֖מְתָּ you got up qam·tā וַתֹּ֥אכַל and ate wat·tō·ḵal לָֽחֶם׃ . . . . ” lā·ḥem 2 Samuel 12:22 וַיֹּ֕אמֶר [David] answered , way·yō·mer בְּעוֹד֙ “ While bə·‘ō·wḏ הַיֶּ֣לֶד the child hay·ye·leḏ חַ֔י was alive , ḥay צַ֖מְתִּי I fasted ṣam·tî וָֽאֶבְכֶּ֑ה and wept , wā·’eḇ·keh כִּ֤י for kî אָמַ֙רְתִּי֙ I said , ’ā·mar·tî מִ֣י ‘ Who mî יוֹדֵ֔עַ knows ? yō·w·ḏê·a‘ יְהוָ֖ה YHWH Yah·weh יְחָנַּנִי may be gracious yə·ḥå̄n·na·nī הַיָּֽלֶד׃ to me hay·yā·leḏ וְחַ֥י and let him live . ’ wə·ḥay
