הַה֑וּא that ha·hū בַּיּ֣וֹם day bay·yō·wm וַתְּהִ֧י was wat·tə·hî עַד־ - ‘aḏ- מְאֹ֖ד vvv mə·’ōḏ קָשָׁ֥ה intense , qā·šāh אַבְנֵר֙ and Abner ’aḇ·nêr וְאַנְשֵׁ֣י and the men wə·’an·šê יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiś·rā·’êl וַיִּנָּ֤גֶף were defeated way·yin·nā·ḡep̄ לִפְנֵ֖י by lip̄·nê עַבְדֵ֥י the servants ‘aḇ·ḏê דָוִֽד׃ of David . ḏā·wiḏ 2 Samuel 2:18 שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ The three šə·lō·šāh בְּנֵ֣י sons bə·nê צְרוּיָ֔ה of Zeruiah ṣə·rū·yāh וַיִּֽהְיוּ־ were way·yih·yū- שָׁ֗ם there : šām יוֹאָ֥ב Joab , yō·w·’āḇ וַאֲבִישַׁ֖י Abishai , wa·’ă·ḇî·šay וַעֲשָׂהאֵ֑ל and Asahel . wa·‘ă·śā·h·’êl וַעֲשָׂהאֵל֙ Now Asahel wa·‘ă·śā·h·’êl קַ֣ל [was] fleet qal בְּרַגְלָ֔יו of foot bə·raḡ·lāw כְּאַחַ֥ד like a kə·’a·ḥaḏ בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃ wild baś·śā·ḏeh הַצְּבָיִ֖ם gazelle haṣ·ṣə·ḇā·yim אֲשֶׁ֥ר - , ’ă·šer 2 Samuel 2:19 עֲשָׂהאֵ֖ל and he ‘ă·śā·h·’êl אַחֲרֵ֣י . . . ’a·ḥă·rê וַיִּרְדֹּ֥ף chased way·yir·dōp̄ אַבְנֵ֑ר Abner , ’aḇ·nêr וְלֹֽא־ not wə·lō- נָטָ֣ה turning nā·ṭāh לָלֶ֗כֶת . . . lā·le·ḵeṯ עַל־ . . . ‘al- הַיָּמִין֙ to the right hay·yā·mîn וְעַֽל־ . . . wə·‘al- הַשְּׂמֹ֔אול or to the left haś·śə·mō·wl מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י . . . mê·’a·ḥă·rê אַבְנֵֽר׃ in his pursuit . ’aḇ·nêr 2 Samuel 2:20 אַבְנֵר֙ And Abner ’aḇ·nêr וַיִּ֤פֶן glanced way·yi·p̄en אַֽחֲרָ֔יו back ’a·ḥă·rāw וַיֹּ֕אמֶר and said , way·yō·mer זֶ֖ה “ Is that zeh הַאַתָּ֥ה you , ha·’at·tāh עֲשָׂהאֵ֑ל Asahel ? ” ‘ă·śā·h·’êl אָנֹֽכִי׃ “ It is , ” ’ā·nō·ḵî וַיֹּ֖אמֶר Asahel replied . way·yō·mer 2 Samuel 2:21 אַבְנֵ֗ר So Abner ’aḇ·nêr וַיֹּ֧אמֶר told way·yō·mer ל֣וֹ him , lōw נְטֵ֤ה “ Turn nə·ṭêh לְךָ֙ to lə·ḵā עַל־ your ‘al- יְמִֽינְךָ֙ right yə·mî·nə·ḵā א֣וֹ or ’ōw עַל־ to ‘al- שְׂמֹאלֶ֔ךָ your left , śə·mō·le·ḵā וֶאֱחֹ֣ז seize we·’ĕ·ḥōz לְךָ֗ lə·ḵā אֶחָד֙ one ’e·ḥāḏ מֵֽהַנְּעָרִ֔ים of the young men , mê·han·nə·‘ā·rîm וְקַח־ and take wə·qaḥ- חֲלִצָת֑וֹ his equipment ḥă·li·ṣā·ṯōw לְךָ֖ for yourself . ” lə·ḵā אֶת־ - ’eṯ- עֲשָׂהאֵ֔ל But Asahel ‘ă·śā·h·’êl אָבָ֣ה would ’ā·ḇāh וְלֹֽא־ not wə·lō- לָס֖וּר stop lā·sūr מֵאַחֲרָֽיו׃ chasing him . mê·’a·ḥă·rāw 2 Samuel 2:22 וַיֹּ֧סֶף Once again way·yō·sep̄ ע֣וֹד . . . , ‘ō·wḏ אַבְנֵ֗ר Abner ’aḇ·nêr לֵאמֹר֙ warned lê·mōr אֶל־ . . . ’el- עֲשָׂהאֵ֔ל Asahel , ‘ă·śā·h·’êl ס֥וּר “ Stop sūr לְךָ֖ lə·ḵā מֵאַֽחֲרָ֑י chasing me . mê·’a·ḥă·rāy לָ֤מָּה Why lām·māh אַכֶּ֙כָּה֙ should I strike ’ak·kek·kāh אַ֔רְצָה you to the ground ? ’ar·ṣāh
