ה֥וּא . . . hū וַאֲנָשָֽׁיו׃פ and his men wa·’ă·nā·šāw הִתְהַלֶּךְ־ had roamed . hiṯ·hal·leḵ- שָׁ֥ם . . . šām 1 Samuel 31:1 וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים Now the Philistines ū·p̄ə·liš·tîm נִלְחָמִ֣ים fought nil·ḥā·mîm בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל against Israel , bə·yiś·rā·’êl אַנְשֵׁ֤י and the men ’an·šê יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiś·rā·’êl וַיָּנֻ֜סוּ fled way·yā·nu·sū מִפְּנֵ֣י before mip·pə·nê פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים them , p̄ə·liš·tîm וַיִּפְּל֥וּ and [many] fell way·yip·pə·lū חֲלָלִ֖ים slain ḥă·lā·lîm בְּהַ֥ר on Mount bə·har הַגִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃ Gilboa . hag·gil·bō·a‘ 1 Samuel 31:2 פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים The Philistines p̄ə·liš·tîm אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיַּדְבְּק֣וּ followed hard after way·yaḏ·bə·qū שָׁא֖וּל Saul šā·’ūl וְאֶת־ - wə·’eṯ- בָּנָ֑יו and his sons , bā·nāw וַיַּכּ֣וּ and they killed way·yak·kū פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים . . . p̄ə·liš·tîm אֶת־ - ’eṯ- שָׁאֽוּל׃ Saul’s šā·’ūl בְּנֵ֥י sons bə·nê יְהוֹנָתָ֧ן Jonathan , yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān וְאֶת־ - wə·’eṯ- אֲבִינָדָ֛ב Abinadab , ’ă·ḇî·nā·ḏāḇ וְאֶת־ and wə·’eṯ- מַלְכִּי־ - mal·kî- שׁ֖וּעַ Malchishua . šū·a‘ 1 Samuel 31:3 הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ When the battle ham·mil·ḥā·māh וַתִּכְבַּ֤ד intensified wat·tiḵ·baḏ אֶל־ against ’el- שָׁא֔וּל Saul , šā·’ūl הַמּוֹרִ֖ים the archers ham·mō·w·rîm אֲנָשִׁ֣ים . . . ’ă·nā·šîm בַּקָּ֑שֶׁת . . . baq·qā·šeṯ וַיִּמְצָאֻ֥הוּ overtook him way·yim·ṣā·’u·hū מֵהַמּוֹרִֽים׃ - mê·ham·mō·w·rîm וַיָּ֥חֶל and wounded him way·yā·ḥel מְאֹ֖ד critically . mə·’ōḏ 1 Samuel 31:4 שָׁאוּל֩ Then Saul šā·’ūl וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said way·yō·mer לְנֹשֵׂ֨א to his armor-bearer lə·nō·śê כֵלָ֜יו . . . , ḵê·lāw שְׁלֹ֥ף “ Draw šə·lōp̄ חַרְבְּךָ֣׀ your sword ḥar·bə·ḵā וְדָקְרֵ֣נִי and run it through me wə·ḏā·qə·rê·nî בָ֗הּ , ḇāh פֶּן־ or pen- הָאֵ֤לֶּה these hā·’êl·leh הָעֲרֵלִ֨ים uncircumcised men hā·‘ă·rê·lîm יָ֠בוֹאוּ will come yā·ḇō·w·’ū וּדְקָרֻ֙נִי֙ and run me through ū·ḏə·qā·ru·nî וְהִתְעַלְּלוּ־ and torture wə·hiṯ·‘al·lə·lū- בִ֔י me ! ” ḇî נֹשֵׂ֣א But his armor-bearer nō·śê כֵלָ֔יו . . . ḵê·lāw כִּ֥י - kî יָרֵ֖א was terrified yā·rê מְאֹ֑ד . . . mə·’ōḏ וְלֹ֤א and refused wə·lō אָבָה֙ to do it . ’ā·ḇāh שָׁאוּל֙ So Saul šā·’ūl אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיִּקַּ֤ח took way·yiq·qaḥ הַחֶ֔רֶב his own sword ha·ḥe·reḇ וַיִּפֹּ֖ל and fell way·yip·pōl עָלֶֽיהָ׃ on it . ‘ā·le·hā 1 Samuel 31:5 נֹשֵֽׂא־ When his armor-bearer nō·śê- כֵלָ֖יו . . . ḵê·lāw וַיַּ֥רְא saw way·yar כִּ֣י that kî שָׁא֑וּל Saul šā·’ūl מֵ֣ת was dead , mêṯ ה֛וּא he hū גַּם־ too gam- וַיִּפֹּ֥ל fell way·yip·pōl עַל־ on ‘al- חַרְבּ֖וֹ his own sword ḥar·bōw וַיָּ֥מָת and died way·yā·māṯ עִמּֽוֹ׃ with him . ‘im·mōw
