וַיְתַו he scratched way·ṯaw עַל־ on ‘al- דַּלְת֣וֹת the doors dal·ṯō·wṯ הַשַּׁ֔עַר of the gate haš·ša·‘ar רִיר֖וֹ and let his saliva rî·rōw וַיּ֥וֹרֶד run way·yō·w·reḏ אֶל־ down ’el- זְקָנֽוֹ׃ his beard . zə·qā·nōw 1 Samuel 21:14 אָכִ֖ישׁ Then Achish ’ā·ḵîš וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said way·yō·mer אֶל־ to ’el- עֲבָדָ֑יו his servants , ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw הִנֵּ֤ה “ Look , hin·nêh תִרְאוּ֙ you can see [that] ṯir·’ū אִ֣ישׁ the man ’îš מִשְׁתַּגֵּ֔עַ is insane ! miš·tag·gê·a‘ לָ֛מָּה Why lām·māh תָּבִ֥יאוּ have you brought tā·ḇî·’ū אֹת֖וֹ him ’ō·ṯōw אֵלָֽי׃ to me ? ’ê·lāy 1 Samuel 21:15 אָ֔נִי Am I ’ā·nî חֲסַ֤ר in need of ḥă·sar מְשֻׁגָּעִים֙ madmen , mə·šug·gā·‘îm כִּי־ that kî- הֲבֵאתֶ֣ם you have brought hă·ḇê·ṯem אֶת־ - ’eṯ- זֶ֔ה this man zeh לְהִשְׁתַּגֵּ֖עַ to rave lə·hiš·tag·gê·a‘ עָלָ֑י in my presence ? ‘ā·lāy הֲזֶ֖ה Must this [man] hă·zeh יָב֥וֹא come yā·ḇō·w אֶל־ into ’el- בֵּיתִֽי׃ס my house ? ” bê·ṯî 1 Samuel 22:1 דָּוִד֙ So David dā·wiḏ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ left way·yê·leḵ מִשָּׁ֔ם [Gath] miš·šām וַיִּמָּלֵ֖ט and took refuge way·yim·mā·lêṭ אֶל־ in ’el- מְעָרַ֣ת the cave mə·‘ā·raṯ עֲדֻלָּ֑ם of Adullam . ‘ă·ḏul·lām אֶחָיו֙ When his brothers ’e·ḥāw וְכָל־ and the rest of wə·ḵāl אָבִ֔יו his father’s ’ā·ḇîw בֵּ֣ית household bêṯ וַיִּשְׁמְע֤וּ heard about it , way·yiš·mə·‘ū וַיֵּרְד֥וּ they went down way·yê·rə·ḏū אֵלָ֖יו to him ’ê·lāw שָֽׁמָּה׃ there . šām·māh 1 Samuel 22:2 כָּל־ And all kāl- אִ֨ישׁ ’îš מָצ֜וֹק who were distressed mā·ṣō·wq וְכָל־ [or] wə·ḵāl אִ֨ישׁ - ’îš אֲשֶׁר־ - ’ă·šer- ל֤וֹ lōw נֹשֶׁא֙ indebted nō·še וְכָל־ . . . wə·ḵāl אִ֣ישׁ . . . ’îš מַר־ or discontented mar- נֶ֔פֶשׁ . . . ne·p̄eš וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֣וּ rallied way·yiṯ·qab·bə·ṣū אֵ֠לָיו around him , ’ê·lāw וַיְהִ֥י and he became way·hî עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם their ‘ă·lê·hem לְשָׂ֑ר leader . lə·śār כְּאַרְבַּ֥ע About four kə·’ar·ba‘ מֵא֖וֹת hundred mê·’ō·wṯ אִֽישׁ׃ men ’îš וַיִּהְי֣וּ were way·yih·yū עִמּ֔וֹ with him . ‘im·mōw 1 Samuel 22:3 מִשָּׁ֖ם From there miš·šām דָּוִ֛ד David dā·wiḏ וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ went way·yê·leḵ מִצְפֵּ֣ה to Mizpeh miṣ·pêh מוֹאָ֑ב of Moab , mō·w·’āḇ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ where he said way·yō·mer אֶל־ to ’el- מֶ֣לֶךְ the king me·leḵ מוֹאָ֗ב of Moab , mō·w·’āḇ נָ֞א “ Please nā אָבִ֤י let my father ’ā·ḇî וְאִמִּי֙ and mother wə·’im·mî יֵֽצֵא־ stay yê·ṣê- אִתְּכֶ֔ם with you ’it·tə·ḵem עַ֚ד until ‘aḏ
