לֶ֤חֶם bread — le·ḥem אִם־ provided that ’im- הַנְּעָרִ֖ים the young men han·nə·‘ā·rîm אַ֥ךְ - ’aḵ נִשְׁמְר֥וּ have kept themselves niš·mə·rū מֵאִשָּֽׁה׃פ from women . ” mê·’iš·šāh 1 Samuel 21:5 דָּוִ֨ד David dā·wiḏ וַיַּעַן֩ answered way·ya·‘an אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַכֹּהֵ֜ן - hak·kō·hên וַיֹּ֣אמֶר - way·yō·mer ל֗וֹ - lōw כִּ֣י , kî אִשָּׁ֤ה “ Women [have] ’iš·šāh אִם־ indeed ’im- עֲצֻֽרָה־ [been] kept ‘ă·ṣu·rāh- לָ֙נוּ֙ from us lā·nū כִּתְמ֣וֹל , kiṯ·mō·wl שִׁלְשֹׁ֔ם as is usual šil·šōm בְּצֵאתִ֕י when I set out . bə·ṣê·ṯî וַיִּהְי֥וּ And way·yih·yū כְלֵֽי־ the equipment ḵə·lê- הַנְּעָרִ֖ים of the young men han·nə·‘ā·rîm קֹ֑דֶשׁ is holy , qō·ḏeš וְהוּא֙ as it [is] wə·hū חֹ֔ל even on common ḥōl דֶּ֣רֶךְ missions , de·reḵ וְאַ֕ף and all the more wə·’ap̄ כִּ֥י at kî הַיּ֖וֹם this time hay·yō·wm יִקְדַּ֥שׁ yiq·daš בַּכֶּֽלִי׃ . ” bak·ke·lî 1 Samuel 21:6 הַכֹּהֵ֖ן So the priest hak·kō·hên וַיִּתֶּן־ gave way·yit·ten- ל֥וֹ him lōw קֹ֑דֶשׁ the consecrated [bread] , qō·ḏeš כִּי֩ since kî הָ֨יָה there was hā·yāh לֹא־ no lō- לֶ֗חֶם bread le·ḥem שָׁ֜ם there šām כִּֽי־ kî- אִם־ but ’im- לֶ֤חֶם the Bread le·ḥem הַפָּנִים֙ of the Presence , hap·pā·nîm הַמּֽוּסָרִים֙ which had been removed ham·mū·sā·rîm מִלִּפְנֵ֣י from before mil·lip̄·nê יְהוָ֔ה YHWH Yah·weh לָשׂוּם֙ and replaced with lā·śūm חֹ֔ם hot ḥōm לֶ֣חֶם bread le·ḥem בְּי֖וֹם on the day bə·yō·wm הִלָּקְחֽוֹ׃ it was taken away . hil·lā·qə·ḥōw 1 Samuel 21:7 אִישׁ֩ Now one ’îš שָׁא֜וּל of Saul’s šā·’ūl מֵעַבְדֵ֨י servants mê·‘aḇ·ḏê וְשָׁ֡ם was there wə·šām הַה֗וּא that ha·hū בַּיּ֣וֹם day , bay·yō·wm נֶעְצָר֙ detained ne‘·ṣār לִפְנֵ֣י before lip̄·nê יְהוָ֔ה YHWH . Yah·weh וּשְׁמ֖וֹ And his name [was] ū·šə·mōw דֹּאֵ֣ג Doeg dō·’êḡ הָאֲדֹמִ֑י the Edomite , hā·’ă·ḏō·mî אַבִּ֥יר the chief ’ab·bîr הָרֹעִ֖ים shepherd hā·rō·‘îm אֲשֶׁ֥ר for ’ă·šer לְשָׁאֽוּל׃ Saul . lə·šā·’ūl 1 Samuel 21:8 דָּוִד֙ Then David dā·wiḏ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר asked way·yō·mer לַאֲחִימֶ֔לֶךְ Ahimelech , la·’ă·ḥî·me·leḵ יֶשׁ־ “ Is there yeš- וְאִ֛ין not wə·’în חֲנִ֣ית a spear ḥă·nîṯ אוֹ־ or ’ōw- חָ֑רֶב sword ḥā·reḇ תַֽחַת־ on ṯa·ḥaṯ- יָדְךָ֖ hand yā·ḏə·ḵā פֹּ֥ה here ? pōh כִּ֣י For kî גַם־ - ḡam- לָקַ֣חְתִּי I have brought lā·qaḥ·tî לֹֽא־ neither lō- חַרְבִּ֤י my sword ḥar·bî וְגַם־ nor wə·ḡam- כֵּלַי֙ my weapons kê·lay בְיָדִ֔י with me , ḇə·yā·ḏî
