בַיָּ֑עַר the forest , ḇay·yā·‘ar וַיְהִ֥י and there was way·hî דְבַ֖שׁ honey ḏə·ḇaš עַל־ on ‘al- פְּנֵ֥י the ground pə·nê הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ . . . . haś·śā·ḏeh 1 Samuel 14:26 הָעָם֙ And when [they] hā·‘ām וַיָּבֹ֤א entered way·yā·ḇō אֶל־ . . . ’el- הַיַּ֔עַר the forest hay·ya·‘ar וְהִנֵּ֖ה and saw wə·hin·nêh הֵ֣לֶךְ the flowing hê·leḵ דְּבָ֑שׁ honey , də·ḇāš וְאֵין־ not one of them wə·’ên- מַשִּׂ֤יג put maś·śîḡ יָדוֹ֙ his hand yā·ḏōw אֶל־ to ’el- פִּ֔יו his mouth , pîw כִּֽי־ because kî- הָעָ֖ם [they] hā·‘ām אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יָרֵ֥א feared yā·rê הַשְּׁבֻעָֽה׃ the oath . haš·šə·ḇu·‘āh 1 Samuel 14:27 וְיוֹנָתָ֣ן Jonathan, however , wə·yō·w·nā·ṯān לֹֽא־ had not lō- שָׁמַ֗ע heard that šā·ma‘ אָבִיו֮ his father ’ā·ḇîw אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הָעָם֒ {had charged} the people hā·‘ām בְּהַשְׁבִּ֣יעַ with the oath . bə·haš·bî·a‘ וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח So he reached out way·yiš·laḥ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- קְצֵ֤ה the end qə·ṣêh הַמַּטֶּה֙ of the staff ham·maṭ·ṭeh אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer בְּיָד֔וֹ in his hand , bə·yā·ḏōw וַיִּטְבֹּ֥ל dipped way·yiṭ·bōl אוֹתָ֖הּ - ’ō·w·ṯāh בְּיַעְרַ֣ת it into the honeycomb bə·ya‘·raṯ הַדְּבָ֑שׁ . . . , had·də·ḇāš וַיָּ֤שֶׁב and put way·yā·šeḇ יָדוֹ֙ his hand yā·ḏōw אֶל־ to ’el- פִּ֔יו his mouth ; pîw עֵינָֽיו׃ and his eyes ‘ê·nāw וַתָּרֹאנָה brightened . wat·tå̄·rō·nå̄h 1 Samuel 14:28 וַיַּעַן֩ Then way·ya·‘an אִ֨ישׁ one ’îš מֵֽהָעָ֜ם of the soldiers mê·hā·‘ām וַיֹּ֗אמֶר told him , way·yō·mer אָבִ֤יךָ “ Your father ’ā·ḇî·ḵā אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הָעָם֙ {bound} the troops hā·‘ām לֵאמֹ֔ר . . . lê·mōr הַשְׁבֵּעַ֩ with a solemn oath , haš·bê·a‘ הִשְׁבִּ֨יעַ saying , hiš·bî·a‘ אָר֥וּר ‘ Cursed [is] ’ā·rūr הָאִ֛ישׁ the man hā·’îš אֲשֶׁר־ who ’ă·šer- יֹ֥אכַל eats yō·ḵal לֶ֖חֶם food le·ḥem הַיּ֑וֹם today . ’ hay·yō·wm הָעָֽם׃ That is why the people hā·‘ām וַיָּ֖עַף are faint .” way·yā·‘ap̄ 1 Samuel 14:29 אָבִ֖י “ My father ’ā·ḇî אֶת־ - ’eṯ- עָכַ֥ר has brought trouble ‘ā·ḵar הָאָ֑רֶץ to the land , ” hā·’ā·reṣ יֽוֹנָתָ֔ן Jonathan yō·w·nā·ṯān וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ replied . way·yō·mer רְאוּ־ “ Just look rə·’ū- נָא֙ . . . nā כִּֽי־ at how kî- עֵינַ֔י my eyes ‘ê·nay אֹ֣רוּ have brightened ’ō·rū כִּ֣י because kî טָעַ֔מְתִּי I tasted ṭā·‘am·tî מְעַ֖ט a little mə·‘aṭ הַזֶּֽה׃ of this haz·zeh דְּבַ֥שׁ honey . də·ḇaš 1 Samuel 14:30 אַ֗ף How much better it would have been ’ap̄ כִּ֡י . . . kî לוּא֩ if lū הָעָ֔ם the troops hā·‘ām אָכֹ֨ל had eaten ’ā·ḵōl
