עֵשָׂ֔ו Esau , ‘ê·śāw אָנֹכִ֥י “ I am ’ā·nō·ḵî הוֹלֵ֖ךְ about to die hō·w·lêḵ לָמ֑וּת . . . , lā·mūṯ וְלָמָּה־ so what good wə·lām·māh- זֶּ֥ה . . . zeh בְּכֹרָֽה׃ is a birthright bə·ḵō·rāh לִ֖י to me ? ” lî Genesis 25:33 הִשָּׁ֤בְעָה “ Swear to me first hiš·šā·ḇə·‘āh לִּי֙ lî כַּיּ֔וֹם - , ” kay·yō·wm יַעֲקֹ֗ב Jacob ya·‘ă·qōḇ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said . way·yō·mer וַיִּשָּׁבַ֖ע So [Esau] swore way·yiš·šā·ḇa‘ ל֑וֹ to [Jacob] lōw וַיִּמְכֹּ֥ר and sold way·yim·kōr אֶת־ - ’eṯ- לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃ him lə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ בְּכֹרָת֖וֹ the birthright . bə·ḵō·rā·ṯōw Genesis 25:34 וְיַעֲקֹ֞ב Then Jacob wə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ נָתַ֣ן gave nā·ṯan לֶ֚חֶם some bread le·ḥem עֲדָשִׁ֔ים and lentil ‘ă·ḏā·šîm וּנְזִ֣יד stew ū·nə·zîḏ לְעֵשָׂ֗ו to Esau , lə·‘ê·śāw וַיֹּ֣אכַל [who] ate way·yō·ḵal וַיֵּ֔שְׁתְּ and drank way·yê·šət וַיָּ֖קָם and then got up way·yā·qām וַיֵּלַ֑ךְ and went away . way·yê·laḵ עֵשָׂ֖ו Thus Esau ‘ê·śāw אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיִּ֥בֶז despised way·yi·ḇez הַבְּכֹרָֽה׃ס his birthright . hab·bə·ḵō·rāh Genesis 26:1 וַיְהִ֤י Now there was way·hî רָעָב֙ another famine rā·‘āḇ בָּאָ֔רֶץ in the land , bā·’ā·reṣ מִלְּבַד֙ subsequent to mil·lə·ḇaḏ הָרָעָ֣ב the [one] hā·rā·‘āḇ הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן . . . hā·ri·šō·wn אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ’ă·šer הָיָ֖ה had occurred hā·yāh אַבְרָהָ֑ם in Abraham’s ’aḇ·rā·hām בִּימֵ֣י time . bî·mê יִצְחָ֛ק And Isaac yiṣ·ḥāq וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ went way·yê·leḵ אֶל־ to ’el- אֲבִימֶּ֥לֶךְ Abimelech ʾă·ḇīm·mɛ·lɛḵ מֶֽלֶךְ־ king me·leḵ- פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים of the Philistines pə·liš·tîm גְּרָֽרָה׃ at Gerar . gə·rā·rāh Genesis 26:2 יְהוָ֔ה YHWH Yah·weh וַיֵּרָ֤א appeared way·yê·rā אֵלָיו֙ to ’ê·lāw וַיֹּ֖אמֶר [Isaac] and said , way·yō·mer אַל־ “ Do not ’al- תֵּרֵ֣ד go down tê·rêḏ מִצְרָ֑יְמָה to Egypt . miṣ·rā·yə·māh שְׁכֹ֣ן Settle šə·ḵōn בָּאָ֔רֶץ in the land bā·’ā·reṣ אֲשֶׁ֖ר where ’ă·šer אֹמַ֥ר I tell you . ’ō·mar אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ . . . ’ê·le·ḵā Genesis 26:3 גּ֚וּר Stay gūr הַזֹּ֔את in this haz·zōṯ בָּאָ֣רֶץ land {as a foreigner} , bā·’ā·reṣ וְאֶֽהְיֶ֥ה and I will be wə·’eh·yeh עִמְּךָ֖ with ‘im·mə·ḵā וַאֲבָרְכֶ֑ךָּ you and bless you . wa·’ă·ḇā·rə·ḵe·kā כִּֽי־ For kî- אֶתֵּן֙ I will give ’et·tên אֶת־ - ’eṯ- כָּל־ all kāl- הָאֵ֔ל these hā·’êl הָֽאֲרָצֹ֣ת lands hā·’ă·rā·ṣōṯ לְךָ֣ to you lə·ḵā וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֗ and your offspring , ū·lə·zar·‘ă·ḵā וַהֲקִֽמֹתִי֙ and I will confirm wa·hă·qi·mō·ṯî אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַשְּׁבֻעָ֔ה the oath haš·šə·ḇu·‘āh אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ’ă·šer נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי I swore niš·ba‘·tî אָבִֽיךָ׃ to your father ’ā·ḇî·ḵā לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם Abraham . lə·’aḇ·rā·hām
