מֶ֥לֶךְ the king me·leḵ הָעַ֖י of Ai hā·‘ay חָ֑י alive ḥāy וַיַּקְרִ֥בוּ and brought way·yaq·ri·ḇū אֹת֖וֹ him ’ō·ṯōw אֶל־ to ’el- יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ Joshua . yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ Joshua 8:24 וַיְהִ֣י - way·hî יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל When Israel yiś·rā·’êl כְּכַלּ֣וֹת had finished kə·ḵal·lō·wṯ לַהֲרֹג֩ killing la·hă·rōḡ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- כָּל־ all kāl- יֹשְׁבֵ֨י the men yō·šə·ḇê הָעַ֜י of Ai hā·‘ay רְדָפ֣וּם who had pursued rə·ḏā·p̄ūm בּ֔וֹ them bōw בַּשָּׂדֶ֗ה into the field baś·śā·ḏeh בַּמִּדְבָּר֙ and wilderness , bam·miḏ·bār אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer כֻלָּ֛ם and when every ḵul·lām לְפִי־ . . . lə·p̄î- וַֽיִּפְּל֥וּ last one of them had fallen way·yip·pə·lū חֶ֖רֶב by the sword , ḥe·reḇ עַד־ . . . ‘aḏ- תֻּמָּ֑ם . . . tum·mām כָל־ all ḵāl יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ the Israelites yiś·rā·’êl וַיָּשֻׁ֤בוּ returned way·yā·šu·ḇū הָעַ֔י to Ai hā·‘ay וַיַּכּ֥וּ and put way·yak·kū אֹתָ֖הּ it ’ō·ṯāh לְפִי־ vvv lə·p̄î- חָֽרֶב׃ to the sword [as well] . ḥā·reḇ Joshua 8:25 וַיְהִי֩ - way·hî כָל־ A total ḵāl שְׁנֵ֥ים of twelve šə·nêm עָשָׂ֖ר . . . ‘ā·śār אָ֑לֶף thousand ’ā·lep̄ מֵאִ֣ישׁ men mê·’îš וְעַד־ and wə·‘aḏ- אִשָּׁ֔ה women ’iš·šāh הַנֹּ֨פְלִ֜ים fell han·nō·p̄ə·lîm הַהוּא֙ that ha·hū בַּיּ֤וֹם day — bay·yō·wm כֹּ֖ל all kōl אַנְשֵׁ֥י the people ’an·šê הָעָֽי׃ of Ai . hā·‘āy Joshua 8:26 וִיהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ Joshua wî·hō·wō·šu·a‘ לֹֽא־ did not lō- הֵשִׁ֣יב draw back hê·šîḇ יָד֔וֹ the hand yā·ḏōw אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ’ă·šer נָטָ֖ה held nā·ṭāh בַּכִּיד֑וֹן his battle lance bak·kî·ḏō·wn עַ֚ד until ‘aḏ אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer הֶחֱרִ֔ים he had devoted to destruction he·ḥĕ·rîm כָּל־ all kāl- יֹשְׁבֵ֥י who lived yō·šə·ḇê הָעָֽי׃ in Ai hā·‘āy אֵ֖ת - . ’êṯ Joshua 8:27 יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel yiś·rā·’êl בָּזְז֥וּ took bā·zə·zū לָהֶ֖ם for themselves lā·hem רַ֣ק only raq הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה the cattle hab·bə·hê·māh וּשְׁלַל֙ and plunder ū·šə·lal הַהִ֔יא of that ha·hî הָעִ֣יר city , hā·‘îr יְהוָ֔ה as YHWH Yah·weh כִּדְבַ֣ר vvv kiḏ·ḇar אֲשֶׁ֥ר vvv ’ă·šer צִוָּ֖ה had commanded ṣiw·wāh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ Joshua . yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ Joshua 8:28 יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ So Joshua yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיִּשְׂרֹ֥ף burned way·yiś·rōp̄ הָעָ֑י Ai hā·‘āy וַיְשִׂימֶ֤הָ and made it way·śî·me·hā עוֹלָם֙ a permanent ‘ō·w·lām תֵּל־ heap of ruins , têl- שְׁמָמָ֔ה a desolation šə·mā·māh עַ֖ד to ‘aḏ
