לָעִ֑יר of the city . lā·‘îr הַה֖וּא And that ha·hū בַּלַּ֥יְלָה night bal·lay·lāh יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ Joshua yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ went way·yê·leḵ בְּת֥וֹךְ into bə·ṯō·wḵ הָעֵֽמֶק׃ the valley . hā·‘ê·meq Joshua 8:14 וַיְהִ֞י - way·hî מֶֽלֶךְ־ When the king me·leḵ- הָעַ֗י of Ai hā·‘ay כִּרְא֣וֹת saw [the Israelites] , kir·’ō·wṯ וַֽיְמַהֲר֡וּ he hurried way·ma·hă·rū וַיֵּצְא֣וּ out way·yê·ṣə·’ū וַיַּשְׁכִּ֡ימוּ early in the morning way·yaš·kî·mū אַנְשֵֽׁי־ with the men ’an·šê- הָעִ֣יר of the city hā·‘îr ה֧וּא - hū וְכָל־ - wə·ḵāl עַמּ֛וֹ - ‘am·mōw לִקְרַֽאת־ to engage liq·raṯ- יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל [them] yiś·rā·’êl לַֽמִּלְחָמָ֞ה in battle lam·mil·ḥā·māh לַמּוֹעֵ֖ד at an appointed place lam·mō·w·‘êḏ לִפְנֵ֣י overlooking lip̄·nê הָֽעֲרָבָ֑ה the Arabah . hā·‘ă·rā·ḇāh וְהוּא֙ But he wə·hū לֹ֣א did not lō יָדַ֔ע know yā·ḏa‘ כִּֽי־ that kî- אֹרֵ֥ב an ambush ’ō·rêḇ ל֖וֹ [had been set up] against him lōw מֵאַחֲרֵ֥י behind mê·’a·ḥă·rê הָעִֽיר׃ the city . hā·‘îr Joshua 8:15 יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ Joshua yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ וְכָל־ and all wə·ḵāl יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiś·rā·’êl וַיִּנָּֽגְע֛וּ let themselves be beaten back way·yin·nā·ḡə·‘ū לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם before them , lip̄·nê·hem וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ and they fled way·yā·nu·sū דֶּ֥רֶךְ toward de·reḵ הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ the wilderness . ham·miḏ·bār Joshua 8:16 כָּל־ Then all kāl- הָעָם֙ the men hā·‘ām בָּעִיר [of Ai] bå̄·ʿīr אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer וַיִּזָּעֲק֗וּ were summoned way·yiz·zā·‘ă·qū לִרְדֹּ֖ף to pursue them , lir·dōp̄ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם . . . ’a·ḥă·rê·hem וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙ and they followed way·yir·də·p̄ū אַחֲרֵ֣י . . . ’a·ḥă·rê יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ Joshua yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ וַיִּנָּתְק֖וּ and were drawn away way·yin·nā·ṯə·qū מִן־ from min- הָעִֽיר׃ the city . hā·‘îr Joshua 8:17 וְלֹֽא־ Not wə·lō- אִ֗ישׁ a man ’îš נִשְׁאַ֣ר was left niš·’ar בָּעַי֙ in Ai bā·‘ay וּבֵ֣ית vvv ū·ḇêṯ אֵ֔ל or Bethel ’êl אֲשֶׁ֥ר who ’ă·šer לֹֽא־ did not lō- יָצְא֖וּ go out yā·ṣə·’ū אַחֲרֵ֣י after ’a·ḥă·rê יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel , yiś·rā·’êl וַיַּעַזְב֤וּ leaving way·ya·‘az·ḇū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הָעִיר֙ the city hā·‘îr פְּתוּחָ֔ה wide open pə·ṯū·ḥāh וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ while they pursued way·yir·də·p̄ū אַחֲרֵ֥י . . . ’a·ḥă·rê יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ Israel . yiś·rā·’êl Joshua 8:18 יְהוָ֜ה Then YHWH Yah·weh וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said way·yō·mer אֶל־ to ’el- יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ Joshua , yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ נְ֠טֵה “ Hold out nə·ṭêh בַּכִּיד֤וֹן your battle lance bak·kî·ḏō·wn אֲשֶׁר־ - ’ă·šer- בְּיָֽדְךָ֙ - bə·yā·ḏə·ḵā אֶל־ toward ’el- הָעַ֔י Ai , hā·‘ay כִּ֥י for kî בְיָדְךָ֖ into your hand ḇə·yā·ḏə·ḵā אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה I will deliver [the city] . ” ’et·tə·nen·nāh
