אֲשֶׁ֨ר whose ’ă·šer שֵׁ֤ם names were šêm שִׁפְרָ֔ה Shiphrah šip̄·rāh וְשֵׁ֥ם . . . wə·šêm הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית and haš·šê·nîṯ פּוּעָֽה׃ Puah , pū·‘āh Exodus 1:16 וַיֹּ֗אמֶר - way·yō·mer הָֽעִבְרִיּ֔וֹת “ When you help the Hebrew hā·‘iḇ·rî·yō·wṯ בְּיַלֶּדְכֶן֙ women give birth , bə·yal·leḏ·ḵen אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וּרְאִיתֶ֖ן observe [them] ū·rə·’î·ṯen עַל־ on ‘al- הָאָבְנָ֑יִם the birthstools . hā·’ā·ḇə·nā·yim אִם־ If ’im- הוּא֙ [the child] hū בֵּ֥ן is a son , bên וַהֲמִתֶּ֣ן kill wa·hă·mit·ten אֹת֔וֹ him ; ’ō·ṯōw וְאִם־ but if wə·’im- הִ֖יא it is hî בַּ֥ת a daughter , baṯ וָחָֽיָה׃ let her live . ” wā·ḥā·yāh Exodus 1:17 הַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙ The midwives, however , ham·yal·lə·ḏōṯ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַתִּירֶ֤אןָ feared wat·tî·re·nā הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים God hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm וְלֹ֣א and did not wə·lō עָשׂ֔וּ do ‘ā·śū כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר as ka·’ă·šer מֶ֣לֶךְ the king me·leḵ מִצְרָ֑יִם of Egypt miṣ·rā·yim דִּבֶּ֥ר had instructed dib·ber אֲלֵיהֶ֖ן . . . ; ’ă·lê·hen הַיְלָדִֽים׃ they let the boys hay·lā·ḏîm וַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ live . wat·tə·ḥay·ye·nā אֶת־ - ’eṯ- Exodus 1:18 מֶֽלֶךְ־ So the king me·leḵ- מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ of Egypt miṣ·ra·yim וַיִּקְרָ֤א summoned way·yiq·rā לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֔ת the midwives lam·yal·lə·ḏōṯ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and asked way·yō·mer לָהֶ֔ן them , lā·hen מַדּ֥וּעַ “ Why mad·dū·a‘ עֲשִׂיתֶ֖ן have you done ‘ă·śî·ṯen הַדָּבָ֣ר . . . had·dā·ḇār הַזֶּ֑ה this ? haz·zeh הַיְלָדִֽים׃ Why have you let the boys hay·lā·ḏîm וַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ live ? ” wat·tə·ḥay·ye·nā אֶת־ - ’eṯ- Exodus 1:19 הַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙ The midwives ham·yal·lə·ḏōṯ וַתֹּאמַ֤רְןָ answered wat·tō·mar·nā אֶל־ . . . ’el- פַּרְעֹ֔ה Pharaoh , par·‘ōh הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת “ The Hebrew women hā·‘iḇ·rî·yōṯ כִּֽי־ . . . kî- לֹ֧א are not lō הַמִּצְרִיֹּ֖ת like the Egyptian ham·miṣ·rî·yōṯ כַנָּשִׁ֛ים women , ḵan·nā·šîm כִּ֣י for kî הֵ֔נָּה they hên·nāh חָי֣וֹת are vigorous ḥā·yō·wṯ הַמְיַלֶּ֖דֶת and give birth ham·yal·le·ḏeṯ בְּטֶ֨רֶם before bə·ṭe·rem וְיָלָֽדוּ׃ a midwife wə·yā·lā·ḏū תָּב֧וֹא arrives tā·ḇō·w אֲלֵהֶ֛ן . . . . ” ’ă·lê·hen Exodus 1:20 אֱלֹהִ֖ים So God ’ĕ·lō·hîm וַיֵּ֥יטֶב was good way·yê·ṭeḇ לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֑ת to the midwives , lam·yal·lə·ḏōṯ הָעָ֛ם and the people hā·‘ām וַיִּ֧רֶב multiplied way·yi·reḇ מְאֹֽד׃ and became even more mə·’ōḏ וַיַּֽעַצְמ֖וּ numerous . way·ya·‘aṣ·mū Exodus 1:21 וַיְהִ֕י - way·hî כִּֽי־ And because kî- הַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖ת the midwives ham·yal·lə·ḏōṯ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יָֽרְא֥וּ feared yā·rə·’ū הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים God , hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm וַיַּ֥עַשׂ He gave way·ya·‘aś לָהֶ֖ם them lā·hem בָּתִּֽים׃ families of their own . bāt·tîm
