מָֽה־ “ What māh- הַדָּבָ֨ר . . . had·dā·ḇār הַזֶּה֙ is this haz·zeh אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer הָרָ֤ע evil hā·rā‘ אַתֶּ֣ם you ’at·tem עֹשִׂ֔ים are doing — ‘ō·śîm וּֽמְחַלְּלִ֖ים profaning ū·mə·ḥal·lə·lîm אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַשַּׁבָּֽת׃ the Sabbath haš·šab·bāṯ י֥וֹם day ? yō·wm Nehemiah 13:18 הֲל֨וֹא Did not hă·lō·w אֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם your forefathers ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem עָשׂוּ֙ do ‘ā·śū כֹ֤ה the same things , ḵōh אֱלֹהֵ֜ינוּ so that our God ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū וַיָּבֵ֨א brought way·yā·ḇê כָּל־ all kāl- הַזֹּ֔את this haz·zōṯ הָרָעָ֣ה disaster hā·rā·‘āh עָלֵ֗ינוּ on us ‘ā·lê·nū אֵ֚ת - ’êṯ וְעַ֖ל and on wə·‘al הַזֹּ֑את this haz·zōṯ הָעִ֣יר city ? hā·‘îr וְאַתֶּ֞ם And now wə·’at·tem מוֹסִיפִ֤ים you are rekindling mō·w·sî·p̄îm חָרוֹן֙ His wrath ḥā·rō·wn עַל־ against ‘al- יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel yiś·rā·’êl לְחַלֵּ֖ל by profaning lə·ḥal·lêl אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַשַּׁבָּֽת׃פ the Sabbath ! ” haš·šab·bāṯ Nehemiah 13:19 וַיְהִ֡י - way·hî כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר When ka·’ă·šer צָֽלֲלוּ֩ the evening shadows ṣā·lă·lū שַׁעֲרֵ֨י began to fall on the gates ša·‘ă·rê יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם of Jerusalem , yə·rū·šā·lim לִפְנֵ֣י just before lip̄·nê הַשַּׁבָּ֗ת the Sabbath , haš·šab·bāṯ וָאֹֽמְרָה֙ I ordered wā·’ō·mə·rāh הַדְּלָת֔וֹת that the gates had·də·lā·ṯō·wṯ וָאֹ֣מְרָ֔ה . . . wā·’ō·mə·rāh אֲשֶׁר֙ - ’ă·šer וַיִּסָּגְר֣וּ be shut way·yis·sā·ḡə·rū לֹ֣א and not lō יִפְתָּח֔וּם opened yip̄·tā·ḥūm עַ֖ד until ‘aḏ אַחַ֣ר after ’a·ḥar הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת the Sabbath . haš·šab·bāṯ הֶֽעֱמַ֙דְתִּי֙ I posted he·‘ĕ·maḏ·tî וּמִנְּעָרַ֗י some of my servants ū·min·nə·‘ā·ray עַל־ at ‘al- הַשְּׁעָרִ֔ים the gates haš·šə·‘ā·rîm לֹא־ so that no lō- מַשָּׂ֖א load maś·śā יָב֥וֹא could enter yā·ḇō·w הַשַּׁבָּֽת׃ on the Sabbath haš·šab·bāṯ בְּי֥וֹם day . bə·yō·wm Nehemiah 13:20 פַּ֥עַם Once pa·‘am וּשְׁתָּֽיִם׃ or twice , ū·šə·tā·yim הָרֹכְלִ֜ים the merchants hā·rō·ḵə·lîm וּמֹכְרֵ֧י and those who sell ū·mō·ḵə·rê כָל־ all kinds ḵāl מִמְכָּ֛ר of goods mim·kār וַיָּלִ֨ינוּ camped way·yā·lî·nū מִח֥וּץ outside mi·ḥūṣ לִירוּשָׁלִָ֖ם Jerusalem , lî·rū·šā·lim Nehemiah 13:21 וָאָעִ֣ידָה but I warned wā·’ā·‘î·ḏāh בָהֶ֗ם them ḇā·hem וָאֹמְרָ֤ה - wā·’ō·mə·rāh אֲלֵיהֶם֙ - , ’ă·lê·hem מַדּ֜וּעַ “ Why mad·dū·a‘ אַתֶּ֤ם are you ’at·tem לֵנִים֙ camping lê·nîm נֶ֣גֶד in front of ne·ḡeḏ הַחוֹמָ֔ה the wall ? ha·ḥō·w·māh אִם־ If ’im- תִּשְׁנ֕וּ you do it again , tiš·nū אֶשְׁלַ֣ח I will lay ’eš·laḥ יָ֖ד hands yāḏ בָּכֶ֑ם on you . ” bā·ḵem מִן־ From min- הַהִ֔יא that ha·hî הָעֵ֣ת time on , hā·‘êṯ לֹא־ they did not lō- בָ֖אוּ return ḇā·’ū בַּשַּׁבָּֽת׃ס on the Sabbath . baš·šab·bāṯ
