אֶת־ - ’eṯ- יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל the Israelites yiś·rā·’êl מִבְּאֵ֥ר from mib·bə·’êr שֶׁ֖בַע Beersheba še·ḇa‘ וְעַד־ to wə·‘aḏ- דָּ֑ן Dan dān וְהָבִ֣יאוּ and bring me [a report] wə·hā·ḇî·’ū אֵלַ֔י . . . , ’ê·lay וְאֵדְעָ֖ה so that I may know wə·’ê·ḏə·‘āh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- מִסְפָּרָֽם׃ their number . ” mis·pā·rām 1 Chronicles 21:3 יוֹאָ֗ב But Joab yō·w·’āḇ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר replied , way·yō·mer יְהוָ֨ה “ May YHWH Yah·weh עַל־ . . . ‘al- יוֹסֵף֩ multiply yō·w·sêp̄ עַמּ֤וֹ׀ His troops ‘am·mōw מֵאָ֣ה a hundred mê·’āh פְעָמִ֔ים times p̄ə·‘ā·mîm כָּהֵם֙ over . kā·hêm אֲדֹנִ֣י My lord ’ă·ḏō·nî הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king , ham·me·leḵ הֲלֹא֙ are they not hă·lō כֻּלָּ֥ם all kul·lām לַעֲבָדִ֑ים servants la·‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm לַאדֹנִ֖י of my lord ? la·ḏō·nî לָ֣מָּה Why lām·māh אֲדֹנִ֔י does my lord ’ă·ḏō·nî יְבַקֵּ֥שׁ want yə·ḇaq·qêš זֹאת֙ to do this ? zōṯ לָ֛מָּה Why lām·māh יִהְיֶ֥ה should he bring yih·yeh לְאַשְׁמָ֖ה guilt lə·’aš·māh לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ on Israel ? ” lə·yiś·rā·’êl 1 Chronicles 21:4 הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ Nevertheless , the king’s ham·me·leḵ וּדְבַר־ word ū·ḏə·ḇar- חָזַ֣ק prevailed ḥā·zaq עַל־ against ‘al- יוֹאָ֑ב Joab . yō·w·’āḇ יוֹאָ֗ב So Joab yō·w·’āḇ וַיֵּצֵ֣א departed way·yê·ṣê וַיִּתְהַלֵּךְ֙ and traveled way·yiṯ·hal·lêḵ בְּכָל־ throughout bə·ḵāl יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel , yiś·rā·’êl וַיָּבֹ֖א and then he returned way·yā·ḇō יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ to Jerusalem . yə·rū·šā·lim 1 Chronicles 21:5 יוֹאָ֛ב And Joab yō·w·’āḇ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיִּתֵּ֥ן reported way·yit·tên אֶל־ to ’el- דָּוִ֑יד David dā·wîḏ מִסְפַּ֥ר the total mis·par מִפְקַד־ number mip̄·qaḏ- הָעָ֖ם of the troops . hā·‘ām כָֽל־ In all ḵāl יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל Israel yiś·rā·’êl וַיְהִ֣י there were way·hî אֶ֣לֶף 1,100,000 {} ’e·lep̄ אֲלָפִים֩ . . . ’ă·lā·p̄îm וּמֵאָ֨ה . . . ū·mê·’āh אֶ֤לֶף . . . ’e·lep̄ אִישׁ֙ men ’îš שֹׁ֣לֵֽף who drew šō·lêp̄ חֶ֔רֶב the sword , ḥe·reḇ אַרְבַּע֩ including 470,000 ’ar·ba‘ מֵא֨וֹת . . . mê·’ō·wṯ וְשִׁבְעִ֥ים . . . wə·šiḇ·‘îm אֶ֛לֶף . . . ’e·lep̄ אִ֖ישׁ . . . ’îš שֹׁ֥לֵֽף . . . šō·lêp̄ חָֽרֶב׃ . . . ḥā·reḇ וִֽיהוּדָ֕ה in Judah . wî·hū·ḏāh 1 Chronicles 21:6 לֹ֥א But [Joab] did not lō פָקַ֖ד include p̄ā·qaḏ וְלֵוִי֙ Levi wə·lê·wî וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן and Benjamin ū·ḇin·yā·min בְּתוֹכָ֑ם in the count , bə·ṯō·w·ḵām כִּֽי־ because kî- הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king’s ham·me·leḵ דְּבַר־ command də·ḇar- נִתְעַ֥ב was detestable niṯ·‘aḇ אֶת־ to ’eṯ- יוֹאָֽב׃ him . yō·w·’āḇ 1 Chronicles 21:7 הַזֶּ֑ה This haz·zeh הַדָּבָ֖ר command had·dā·ḇār
