הַנָּשִׁ֥ים . . . , han·nā·šîm וַתֹּאמַ֑רְןָ vvv wat·tō·mar·nā וַֽתַּעֲנֶ֛ינָה they sang out : wat·ta·‘ă·ne·nāh שָׁאוּל֙ “ Saul šā·’ūl הִכָּ֤ה has slain hik·kāh בְּאַלְפּוֹ [his] thousands , bə·ʾal·pō וְדָוִ֖ד and David wə·ḏā·wiḏ בְּרִבְבֹתָֽיו׃ his tens of thousands . ” bə·riḇ·ḇō·ṯāw 1 Samuel 18:8 לְשָׁא֜וּל And Saul lə·šā·’ūl וַיִּ֨חַר was furious way·yi·ḥar מְאֹ֗ד . . . mə·’ōḏ וַיֵּ֤רַע and resented way·yê·ra‘ בְּעֵינָיו֙ . . . bə·‘ê·nāw הַזֶּ֔ה this haz·zeh הַדָּבָ֣ר song . had·dā·ḇār נָתְנ֤וּ “ They have ascribed nā·ṯə·nū רְבָב֔וֹת tens of thousands rə·ḇā·ḇō·wṯ לְדָוִד֙ to David , ” lə·ḏā·wiḏ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר he said , way·yō·mer נָתְנ֖וּ “ but only nā·ṯə·nū הָאֲלָפִ֑ים thousands hā·’ă·lā·p̄îm וְלִ֥י to me . wə·lî וְע֥וֹד What more wə·‘ō·wḏ ל֖וֹ can he have lōw אַ֥ךְ but ’aḵ הַמְּלוּכָֽה׃ the kingdom ?” ham·mə·lū·ḵāh 1 Samuel 18:9 וַיְהִ֥י And way·hî הַה֖וּא from that ha·hū מֵהַיּ֥וֹם day mê·hay·yō·wm וָהָֽלְאָה׃ס forward wā·hā·lə·’āh שָׁא֖וּל Saul šā·’ūl עָוֹן kept a jealous eye ʿå̄·wōn אֶת־ - ’eṯ- דָּוִ֑ד on David . dā·wiḏ 1 Samuel 18:10 וַיְהִ֣י - way·hî מִֽמָּחֳרָ֗ת The next day mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ רוּחַ֩ a spirit rū·aḥ רָעָ֤ה׀ of distress rā·‘āh אֱלֹהִ֨ים׀ sent from God ’ĕ·lō·hîm וַתִּצְלַ֣ח came wat·tiṣ·laḥ אֶל־ upon ’el- שָׁאוּל֙ Saul , šā·’ūl וַיִּתְנַבֵּ֣א and he prophesied way·yiṯ·nab·bê בְתוֹךְ־ inside the ḇə·ṯō·wḵ- הַבַּ֔יִת house hab·ba·yiṯ וְדָוִ֛ד while David wə·ḏā·wiḏ מְנַגֵּ֥ן played [the harp] mə·nag·gên כְּי֣וֹם׀ vvv kə·yō·wm בְּי֑וֹם as usual . bə·yō·wm שָׁאֽוּל׃ Now Saul šā·’ūl בְּיָד֖וֹ was holding bə·yā·ḏōw וְהַחֲנִ֖ית a spear , wə·ha·ḥă·nîṯ בְּיַד־ . . . bə·yaḏ- 1 Samuel 18:11 שָׁאוּל֙ and he šā·’ūl אֶֽת־ - ’eṯ- וַיָּ֤טֶל hurled it way·yā·ṭel הַחֲנִ֔ית . . . , ha·ḥă·nîṯ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר thinking , way·yō·mer אַכֶּ֥ה “ I will pin ’ak·keh בְדָוִ֖ד David ḇə·ḏā·wiḏ וּבַקִּ֑יר to the wall .” ū·ḇaq·qîr דָּוִ֛ד But David dā·wiḏ וַיִּסֹּ֥ב eluded way·yis·sōḇ מִפָּנָ֖יו him mip·pā·nāw פַּעֲמָֽיִם׃ twice . pa·‘ă·mā·yim 1 Samuel 18:12 שָׁא֖וּל So Saul šā·’ūl וַיִּרָ֥א was afraid way·yi·rā מִלִּפְנֵ֣י of mil·lip̄·nê דָוִ֑ד David , ḏā·wiḏ כִּֽי־ because kî- יְהוָה֙ YHWH Yah·weh הָיָ֤ה was hā·yāh עִמּ֔וֹ with David ‘im·mōw וּמֵעִ֥ם but ū·mê·‘im סָֽר׃ had departed sār שָׁא֖וּל from Saul . šā·’ūl 1 Samuel 18:13 שָׁאוּל֙ Therefore Saul šā·’ūl מֵֽעִמּ֔וֹ . . . mê·‘im·mōw וַיְסִרֵ֤הוּ sent [David] away way·si·rê·hū וַיְשִׂמֵ֥הוּ and gave way·śi·mê·hū ל֖וֹ him lōw שַׂר־ command śar-
