מְאַסְתִּ֑יהוּ I have rejected him ; mə·’as·tî·hū כִּ֣י׀ - kî לֹ֗א [YHWH does] not [see] lō אֲשֶׁ֤ר as ’ă·šer הָאָדָ֔ם man hā·’ā·ḏām יִרְאֶה֙ does . yir·’eh כִּ֤י For kî הָֽאָדָם֙ man hā·’ā·ḏām יִרְאֶ֣ה sees yir·’eh לַעֵינַ֔יִם the outward appearance , la·‘ê·na·yim וַיהוָ֖ה but YHWH Yah·weh יִרְאֶ֥ה sees yir·’eh לַלֵּבָֽב׃ the heart .” lal·lê·ḇāḇ 1 Samuel 16:8 יִשַׁי֙ Then Jesse yi·šay אֶל־ . . . ’el- וַיִּקְרָ֤א called way·yiq·rā אֲבִ֣ינָדָ֔ב Abinadab ’ă·ḇî·nā·ḏāḇ וַיַּעֲבִרֵ֖הוּ and presented him way·ya·‘ă·ḇi·rê·hū לִפְנֵ֣י to lip̄·nê שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל Samuel , šə·mū·’êl וַיֹּ֕אמֶר who said , way·yō·mer יְהוָֽה׃ “ YHWH Yah·weh לֹֽא־ has not lō- בָחַ֥ר chosen ḇā·ḥar בָּזֶ֖ה this bā·zeh גַּם־ one either . ” gam- 1 Samuel 16:9 יִשַׁ֖י Next Jesse yi·šay וַיַּעֲבֵ֥ר presented way·ya·‘ă·ḇêr שַׁמָּ֑ה Shammah , šam·māh וַיֹּ֕אמֶר but Samuel said , way·yō·mer יְהוָֽה׃ “ YHWH Yah·weh לֹא־ has not lō- בָחַ֥ר chosen ḇā·ḥar בָּזֶ֖ה this bā·zeh גַּם־ one either .” gam- 1 Samuel 16:10 יִשַׁ֛י Thus Jesse yi·šay שִׁבְעַ֥ת made seven šiḇ·‘aṯ בָּנָ֖יו of his sons bā·nāw וַיַּעֲבֵ֥ר pass way·ya·‘ă·ḇêr לִפְנֵ֣י before lip̄·nê שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל Samuel , šə·mū·’êl שְׁמוּאֵל֙ but Samuel šə·mū·’êl אֶל־ . . . ’el- וַיֹּ֤אמֶר told way·yō·mer יִשַׁ֔י him , yi·šay יְהוָ֖ה “ YHWH Yah·weh לֹא־ has not lō- בָחַ֥ר chosen ḇā·ḥar בָּאֵֽלֶּה׃ any of these .” bā·’êl·leh 1 Samuel 16:11 שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל And Samuel šə·mū·’êl אֶל־ . . . ’el- וַיֹּ֨אמֶר asked way·yō·mer יִשַׁי֮ him , yi·šay הֲתַ֣מּוּ “ Are these all hă·ṯam·mū הַנְּעָרִים֒ the sons you have? ” han·nə·‘ā·rîm ע֚וֹד “ There is still ‘ō·wḏ שָׁאַ֣ר . . . šā·’ar הַקָּטָ֔ן the youngest ,” haq·qā·ṭān וַיֹּ֗אמֶר Jesse replied , way·yō·mer וְהִנֵּ֥ה “ but he is wə·hin·nêh רֹעֶ֖ה tending rō·‘eh בַּצֹּ֑אן the sheep . ” baṣ·ṣōn שִׁלְחָ֣ה “ Send for šil·ḥāh וְקָחֶ֔נּוּ him , ” wə·qā·ḥen·nū שְׁמוּאֵ֤ל Samuel šə·mū·’êl אֶל־ . . . ’el- וַיֹּ֨אמֶר replied way·yō·mer יִשַׁי֙ - . yi·šay כִּ֥י “ For kî לֹא־ we will not lō- נָסֹ֖ב sit down [to eat] nā·sōḇ עַד־ until ‘aḏ- בֹּא֥וֹ he arrives bō·’ōw פֹֽה׃ . . . .” p̄ōh 1 Samuel 16:12 וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח So Jesse sent for [his youngest son] way·yiš·laḥ וַיְבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙ and brought him in . way·ḇî·’ê·hū וְה֣וּא He wə·hū אַדְמוֹנִ֔י [was] ruddy , ’aḏ·mō·w·nî יְפֵ֥ה with beautiful yə·p̄êh עֵינַ֖יִם eyes ‘ê·na·yim עִם־ . . . ‘im- וְט֣וֹב and a handsome wə·ṭō·wḇ רֹ֑אִי פ appearance . rō·ʾī p̄ יְהוָ֛ה And YHWH Yah·weh וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said , way·yō·mer
