וַיִּטּ֖וּ they turned aside way·yiṭ·ṭū אַחֲרֵ֣י toward ’a·ḥă·rê הַבָּ֑צַע dishonest gain , hab·bā·ṣa‘ וַיִּ֨קְחוּ־ accepting way·yiq·ḥū- שֹׁ֔חַד bribes šō·ḥaḏ וַיַּטּ֖וּ and perverting way·yaṭ·ṭū מִשְׁפָּֽט׃פ justice . miš·pāṭ 1 Samuel 8:4 כֹּ֖ל So all kōl זִקְנֵ֣י the elders ziq·nê יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel yiś·rā·’êl וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֔וּ gathered together way·yiṯ·qab·bə·ṣū וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ and came way·yā·ḇō·’ū אֶל־ to ’el- שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל Samuel šə·mū·’êl הָרָמָֽתָה׃ at Ramah . hā·rā·mā·ṯāh 1 Samuel 8:5 הִנֵּה֙ “ Look , ” hin·nêh וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ they said way·yō·mə·rū אֵלָ֗יו - , ’ê·lāw אַתָּ֣ה “ you ’at·tāh זָקַ֔נְתָּ are old , zā·qan·tā וּבָנֶ֕יךָ and your sons ū·ḇā·ne·ḵā לֹ֥א do not lō הָלְכ֖וּ walk hā·lə·ḵū בִּדְרָכֶ֑יךָ in your ways . biḏ·rā·ḵe·ḵā עַתָּ֗ה Now ‘at·tāh שִֽׂימָה־ appoint śî·māh- לָּ֥נוּ - lā·nū מֶ֛לֶךְ a king me·leḵ לְשָׁפְטֵ֖נוּ to judge us lə·šā·p̄ə·ṭê·nū כְּכָל־ like all kə·ḵāl- הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ the other nations .” hag·gō·w·yim 1 Samuel 8:6 כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר But when ka·’ă·šer אָמְר֔וּ they said , ’ā·mə·rū תְּנָה־ “ Give tə·nāh- לָּ֥נוּ us lā·nū מֶ֖לֶךְ a king me·leḵ לְשָׁפְטֵ֑נוּ to judge us , ” lə·šā·p̄ə·ṭê·nū הַדָּבָר֙ their demand had·dā·ḇār וַיֵּ֤רַע was displeasing way·yê·ra‘ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight bə·‘ê·nê שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל of Samuel ; šə·mū·’êl שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל so he šə·mū·’êl וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל prayed way·yiṯ·pal·lêl אֶל־ to ’el- יְהוָֽה׃פ YHWH . Yah·weh 1 Samuel 8:7 יְהוָה֙ And YHWH Yah·weh וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said way·yō·mer אֶל־ to ’el- שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel , šə·mū·’êl שְׁמַע֙ “ Listen šə·ma‘ בְּק֣וֹל to the voice bə·qō·wl הָעָ֔ם of the people hā·‘ām לְכֹ֥ל in all lə·ḵōl אֲשֶׁר־ that ’ă·šer- יֹאמְר֖וּ they say yō·mə·rū אֵלֶ֑יךָ to you . ’ê·le·ḵā כִּ֣י For kî לֹ֤א it is not lō אֹֽתְךָ֙ you ’ō·ṯə·ḵā מָאָ֔סוּ they have rejected , mā·’ā·sū כִּֽי־ but kî- מָאֲס֖וּ they have rejected mā·’ă·sū אֹתִ֥י Me ’ō·ṯî מִמְּלֹ֥ךְ as their king mim·mə·lōḵ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ . . . . ‘ă·lê·hem 1 Samuel 8:8 כְּכָֽל־ Just as kə·ḵāl- הַמַּעֲשִׂ֣ים . . . ham·ma·‘ă·śîm עָשׂ֗וּ they have done ‘ā·śū אֲשֶׁר־ - ’ă·šer- מִיּוֹם֩ from the day mî·yō·wm הַעֲלֹתִ֨י I brought them up ha·‘ă·lō·ṯî אֹתָ֤ם - ’ō·ṯām מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ out of Egypt mim·miṣ·ra·yim וְעַד־ until wə·‘aḏ- הַזֶּ֔ה this haz·zeh הַיּ֣וֹם day , hay·yō·wm וַיַּ֣עַזְבֻ֔נִי forsaking Me way·ya·‘az·ḇu·nî וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ and serving way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū אֲחֵרִ֑ים other ’ă·ḥê·rîm אֱלֹהִ֣ים gods , ’ĕ·lō·hîm גַּם־ - gam- כֵּ֛ן so kên הֵ֥מָּה they hêm·māh עֹשִׂ֖ים are doing ‘ō·śîm לָֽךְ׃ to you . lāḵ
