בַּשָּׁנָֽה׃ס year baš·šā·nāh בְּנ֣וֹת the young women bə·nō·wṯ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiś·rā·’êl תֵּלַ֙כְנָה֙ go out tê·laḵ·nāh אַרְבַּ֥עַת for four ’ar·ba·‘aṯ יָמִ֖ים days yā·mîm לְתַנּ֕וֹת to lament lə·ṯan·nō·wṯ לְבַת־ the daughter lə·ḇaṯ- יִפְתָּ֖ח of Jephthah yip̄·tāḥ הַגִּלְעָדִ֑י the Gileadite . hag·gil·‘ā·ḏî Judges 12:1 אִ֣ישׁ Then the men ’îš אֶפְרַ֔יִם of Ephraim ’ep̄·ra·yim וַיִּצָּעֵק֙ assembled way·yiṣ·ṣā·‘êq וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֖ר and crossed [the Jordan] way·ya·‘ă·ḇōr צָפ֑וֹנָה to Zaphon . ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ They said way·yō·mə·rū לְיִפְתָּ֜ח to Jephthah , lə·yip̄·tāḥ מַדּ֣וּעַ׀ “ Why mad·dū·a‘ עָבַ֣רְתָּ׀ have you crossed over ‘ā·ḇar·tā לְהִלָּחֵ֣ם to fight lə·hil·lā·ḥêm בִּבְנֵי־ the Ammonites biḇ·nê- עַמּ֗וֹן . . . ‘am·mō·wn וְלָ֙נוּ֙ - wə·lā·nū לֹ֤א without lō קָרָ֙אתָ֙ calling us qā·rā·ṯā לָלֶ֣כֶת to go lā·le·ḵeṯ עִמָּ֔ךְ with you ? ‘im·māḵ בֵּיתְךָ֕ We will burn your house bê·ṯə·ḵā נִשְׂרֹ֥ף down niś·rōp̄ עָלֶ֖יךָ . . . ‘ā·le·ḵā בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ with you inside ! ” bā·’êš Judges 12:2 יִפְתָּח֙ But Jephthah yip̄·tāḥ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר replied way·yō·mer אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם - , ’ă·lê·hem אִ֣ישׁ - ’îš וְעַמִּ֥י “ My people wə·‘am·mî אֲנִ֛י and I ’ă·nî הָיִ֛יתִי had hā·yî·ṯî מְאֹ֑ד a serious mə·’ōḏ רִ֗יב conflict rîḇ וּבְנֵֽי־ with the Ammonites ū·ḇə·nê- עַמּ֖וֹן . . . , ‘am·mō·wn וָאֶזְעַ֣ק and when I called , wā·’ez·‘aq אֶתְכֶ֔ם - ’eṯ·ḵem וְלֹֽא־ you did not wə·lō- הוֹשַׁעְתֶּ֥ם save hō·wō·ša‘·tem אוֹתִ֖י me ’ō·w·ṯî מִיָּדָֽם׃ out of their hands . mî·yā·ḏām Judges 12:3 וָֽאֶרְאֶ֞ה When I saw wā·’er·’eh כִּֽי־ that kî- אֵינְךָ֣ you would not ’ê·nə·ḵā מוֹשִׁ֗יע save me , mō·šīʿ וָאָשִׂ֨ימָה I risked wā·’ā·śî·māh בְכַפִּי֙ . . . ḇə·ḵap·pî נַפְשִׁ֤י my life nap̄·šî וָֽאֶעְבְּרָה֙ and crossed over wā·’e‘·bə·rāh אֶל־ to ’el- בְּנֵ֣י the Ammonites bə·nê עַמּ֔וֹן . . . , ‘am·mō·wn יְהוָ֖ה and YHWH Yah·weh וַיִּתְּנֵ֥ם delivered them way·yit·tə·nêm בְּיָדִ֑י into my hand . bə·yā·ḏî וְלָמָ֞ה Why then wə·lā·māh עֲלִיתֶ֥ם have you come ‘ă·lî·ṯem אֵלַ֛י . . . ’ê·lay הַיּ֥וֹם today hay·yō·wm הַזֶּ֖ה . . . haz·zeh לְהִלָּ֥חֶם to fight lə·hil·lā·ḥem בִּֽי׃ against me ? ” bî Judges 12:4 יִפְתָּח֙ Jephthah then yip̄·tāḥ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיִּקְבֹּ֤ץ gathered way·yiq·bōṣ כָּל־ all kāl- אַנְשֵׁ֣י the men ’an·šê גִלְעָ֔ד of Gilead ḡil·‘āḏ וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם and fought way·yil·lā·ḥem אֶת־ against ’eṯ- אֶפְרָ֑יִם Ephraim . ’ep̄·rā·yim אַנְשֵׁ֨י And the men ’an·šê גִלְעָ֜ד of Gilead ḡil·‘āḏ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- וַיַּכּוּ֩ struck them down way·yak·kū כִּ֤י because kî אֶפְרַ֗יִם the Ephraimites ’ep̄·ra·yim אָמְרוּ֙ had said , ’ā·mə·rū אַתֶּ֔ם “ You ’at·tem גִּלְעָ֕ד Gileadites gil·‘āḏ פְּלִיטֵ֤י are fugitives pə·lî·ṭê
