Genesis 11:1 כָל־ Now the whole ḵāl הָאָ֖רֶץ world hā·’ā·reṣ וַֽיְהִ֥י had way·hî אֶחָ֑ת one ’e·ḥāṯ שָׂפָ֣ה language śā·p̄āh אֲחָדִֽים׃ and a common ’ă·ḥā·ḏîm וּדְבָרִ֖ים form of speech . ū·ḏə·ḇā·rîm Genesis 11:2 וַֽיְהִ֖י And way·hî בְּנָסְעָ֣ם as people journeyed bə·nā·sə·‘ām מִקֶּ֑דֶם eastward , miq·qe·ḏem וַֽיִּמְצְא֥וּ they found way·yim·ṣə·’ū בִקְעָ֛ה a plain ḇiq·‘āh בְּאֶ֥רֶץ in the land bə·’e·reṣ שִׁנְעָ֖ר of Shinar šin·‘ār וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ and settled way·yê·šə·ḇū שָֽׁם׃ there . šām Genesis 11:3 וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ And they said way·yō·mə·rū אֶל־ to ’el- אִ֣ישׁ one ’îš רֵעֵ֗הוּ another , rê·‘ê·hū הָ֚בָה “ Come , hā·ḇāh נִלְבְּנָ֣ה let us make nil·bə·nāh לְבֵנִ֔ים bricks lə·ḇê·nîm וְנִשְׂרְפָ֖ה and bake them wə·niś·rə·p̄āh לִשְׂרֵפָ֑ה thoroughly . ” liś·rê·p̄āh וַתְּהִ֨י So they used wat·tə·hî לָהֶ֤ם - lā·hem הַלְּבֵנָה֙ brick hal·lə·ḇê·nāh לְאָ֔בֶן instead of stone , lə·’ā·ḇen וְהַ֣חֵמָ֔ר and tar wə·ha·ḥê·mār הָיָ֥ה - hā·yāh לָהֶ֖ם - lā·hem לַחֹֽמֶר׃ instead of mortar . la·ḥō·mer Genesis 11:4 הָ֣בָה׀ “ Come , ” hā·ḇāh וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ they said , way·yō·mə·rū נִבְנֶה־ “ let us build niḇ·neh- לָּ֣נוּ for ourselves lā·nū עִ֗יר a city ‘îr וּמִגְדָּל֙ with a tower ū·miḡ·dāl וְרֹאשׁ֣וֹ that reaches wə·rō·šōw בַשָּׁמַ֔יִם to the heavens , ḇaš·šā·ma·yim וְנַֽעֲשֶׂה־ that we may make wə·na·‘ă·śeh- שֵׁ֑ם a name šêm לָּ֖נוּ for ourselves lā·nū פֶּן־ and not pen- נָפ֖וּץ be scattered nā·p̄ūṣ עַל־ over ‘al- פְּנֵ֥י the face pə·nê כָל־ of all ḵāl הָאָֽרֶץ׃ the earth . ” hā·’ā·reṣ Genesis 11:5 יְהוָ֔ה Then YHWH Yah·weh וַיֵּ֣רֶד came down way·yê·reḏ לִרְאֹ֥ת to see lir·’ōṯ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הָעִ֖יר the city hā·‘îr וְאֶת־ - wə·’eṯ- הַמִּגְדָּ֑ל and the tower ham·miḡ·dāl אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ’ă·šer בְּנֵ֥י the sons bə·nê הָאָדָֽם׃ of men hā·’ā·ḏām בָּנ֖וּ were building . bā·nū Genesis 11:6 יְהוָ֗ה And YHWH Yah·weh וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said , way·yō·mer הֵ֣ן “ If hên הַחִלָּ֣ם they have begun ha·ḥil·lām לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת to do la·‘ă·śō·wṯ וְזֶ֖ה this wə·zeh אֶחָד֙ as one ’e·ḥāḏ עַ֤ם people ‘am לְכֻלָּ֔ם speaking the same lə·ḵul·lām אַחַת֙ . . . ’a·ḥaṯ וְשָׂפָ֤ה language , wə·śā·p̄āh וְעַתָּה֙ then wə·‘at·tāh לֹֽא־ nothing lō- כֹּ֛ל . . . kōl אֲשֶׁ֥ר - ’ă·šer יָזְמ֖וּ they devise yā·zə·mū לַֽעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ . . . la·‘ă·śō·wṯ יִבָּצֵ֣ר will be beyond yib·bā·ṣêr מֵהֶ֔ם them . mê·hem
