לָב֖וֹא to come lā·ḇō·w לְהִלָּחֵ֣ם and fight lə·hil·lā·ḥêm בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם against Jerusalem bî·rū·šā·lim וְלַעֲשׂ֥וֹת and create wə·la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ל֖וֹ lōw תּוֹעָֽה׃ a hindrance . tō·w·‘āh Nehemiah 4:9 וַנִּתְפַּלֵּ֖ל So we prayed wan·niṯ·pal·lêl אֶל־ to ’el- אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ our God ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū וַנַּעֲמִ֨יד and posted wan·na·‘ă·mîḏ מִשְׁמָ֧ר a guard miš·mār עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם against them ‘ă·lê·hem מִפְּנֵיהֶֽם׃ . . . mip·pə·nê·hem יוֹמָ֥ם day yō·w·mām וָלַ֖יְלָה and night . wā·lay·lāh Nehemiah 4:10 יְהוּדָ֗ה Meanwhile, the people of Judah yə·hū·ḏāh וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said : way·yō·mer כֹּ֣חַ “ The strength kō·aḥ הַסַּבָּ֔ל of the laborer has·sab·bāl כָּשַׁל֙ fails , kā·šal הַרְבֵּ֑ה and there is so much har·bêh וְהֶעָפָ֖ר rubble wə·he·‘ā·p̄ār וַאֲנַ֙חְנוּ֙ that we wa·’ă·naḥ·nū לֹ֣א will never lō נוּכַ֔ל be able nū·ḵal לִבְנ֖וֹת to rebuild liḇ·nō·wṯ בַּחוֹמָֽה׃ the wall . ” ba·ḥō·w·māh Nehemiah 4:11 צָרֵ֗ינוּ And our enemies ṣā·rê·nū וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ said , way·yō·mə·rū עַ֛ד “ Before ‘aḏ אֲשֶׁר־ - ’ă·šer- יֵדְעוּ֙ they know yê·ḏə·‘ū וְלֹ֣א [or] wə·lō יִרְא֔וּ see yir·’ū לֹ֤א [a thing] , lō נָב֥וֹא we will come nā·ḇō·w אֶל־ into ’el- תּוֹכָ֖ם their midst , tō·w·ḵām וַהֲרַגְנ֑וּם kill them , wa·hă·raḡ·nūm וְהִשְׁבַּ֖תְנוּ and put an end wə·hiš·baṯ·nū אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַמְּלָאכָֽה׃ to the work . ” ham·mə·lā·ḵāh Nehemiah 4:12 וַֽיְהִי֙ At that time way·hî כַּאֲשֶׁר־ - ka·’ă·šer- הַיְּהוּדִ֔ים the Jews hay·yə·hū·ḏîm הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים who lived hay·yō·šə·ḇîm אֶצְלָ֑ם nearby ’eṣ·lām בָּ֣אוּ came bā·’ū וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ and told way·yō·mə·rū לָ֙נוּ֙ us lā·nū עֶ֣שֶׂר ten ‘e·śer פְּעָמִ֔ים times [over] , pə·‘ā·mîm מִכָּל־ “ Wherever mik·kāl הַמְּקֹמ֖וֹת . . . ham·mə·qō·mō·wṯ אֲשֶׁר־ - ’ă·šer- תָּשׁ֥וּבוּ you turn , tā·šū·ḇū עָלֵֽינוּ׃ they will attack us . ” ‘ā·lê·nū Nehemiah 4:13 וָֽאַעֲמִ֞יד So I stationed [men] wā·’a·‘ă·mîḏ מֵאַחֲרֵ֥י behind mê·’a·ḥă·rê מִֽתַּחְתִּיּ֧וֹת the lowest mit·taḥ·tî·yō·wṯ לַמָּק֛וֹם sections lam·mā·qō·wm לַחוֹמָ֖ה of the wall , la·ḥō·w·māh בַּצְּחִחִיִּים at the vulnerable areas . baṣ·ṣə·ḥi·ḥī·yīm וָֽאַעֲמִ֤יד I stationed wā·’a·‘ă·mîḏ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הָעָם֙ them hā·‘ām לְמִשְׁפָּח֔וֹת by families lə·miš·pā·ḥō·wṯ עִם־ with ‘im- חַרְבֹתֵיהֶ֛ם their swords , ḥar·ḇō·ṯê·hem רָמְחֵיהֶ֖ם spears , rā·mə·ḥê·hem וְקַשְּׁתֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ and bows . wə·qaš·šə·ṯō·ṯê·hem Nehemiah 4:14 וָאֵ֣רֶא After I had made an inspection , wā·’ê·re וָאָק֗וּם I stood up wā·’ā·qūm וָאֹמַ֞ר and said wā·’ō·mar אֶל־ to ’el- הַחֹרִ֤ים the nobles , ha·ḥō·rîm וְאֶל־ . . . wə·’el- הַסְּגָנִים֙ the officials , has·sə·ḡā·nîm וְאֶל־ . . . wə·’el- יֶ֣תֶר and the rest ye·ṯer הָעָ֔ם of the people , hā·‘ām אַל־ “ Do not ’al-
