רֹ֗אשׁ chief men rōš וַיֵּרְד֨וּ went down way·yê·rə·ḏū וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ . . . way·yā·ḇō·’ū אֶל־ to ’el- דָּוִ֔ד David dā·wiḏ אֶל־ at ’el- מְעָרַ֖ת the cave mə·‘ā·raṯ עֲדֻלָּ֑ם of Adullam , ‘ă·ḏul·lām וְחַיַּ֣ת while a company wə·ḥay·yaṯ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים of Philistines pə·liš·tîm חֹנָ֖ה was encamped ḥō·nāh בְּעֵ֥מֶק in the Valley bə·‘ê·meq רְפָאִֽים׃ of Rephaim . rə·p̄ā·’îm 2 Samuel 23:14 אָ֣ז At that time ’āz וְדָוִ֖ד David wə·ḏā·wiḏ בַּמְּצוּדָ֑ה was in the stronghold , bam·mə·ṣū·ḏāh וּמַצַּ֣ב and the garrison ū·maṣ·ṣaḇ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים of the Philistines pə·liš·tîm אָ֖ז . . . ’āz בֵּ֥ית vvv bêṯ לָֽחֶם׃ was at Bethlehem . lā·ḥem 2 Samuel 23:15 דָוִ֖ד David ḏā·wiḏ וַיִּתְאַוֶּ֥ה longed [for water] way·yiṯ·’aw·weh וַיֹּאמַ֑ר and said , way·yō·mar מִ֚י “ Oh, that someone mî יַשְׁקֵ֣נִי would get me a drink yaš·qê·nî מַ֔יִם of water ma·yim מִבֹּ֥אר from the well mib·bōr בַּשָּֽׁעַר׃ near the gate baš·šā·‘ar בֵּֽית־ vvv bêṯ- לֶ֖חֶם of Bethlehem le·ḥem אֲשֶׁ֥ר - ! ” ’ă·šer 2 Samuel 23:16 שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת So the three šə·lō·šeṯ הַגִּבֹּרִ֜ים mighty men hag·gib·bō·rîm וַיִּבְקְעוּ֩ broke way·yiḇ·qə·‘ū פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים through the Philistine p̄ə·liš·tîm בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה camp , bə·ma·ḥă·nêh וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־ drew way·yiš·’ă·ḇū- מַ֙יִם֙ water ma·yim מִבֹּ֤אר from the well mib·bōr בַּשַּׁ֔עַר near the gate baš·ša·‘ar וַיִּשְׂא֖וּ . . . way·yiś·’ū בֵּֽית־ vvv bêṯ- לֶ֙חֶם֙ of Bethlehem , le·ḥem אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer וַיָּבִ֣אוּ and brought [it] way·yā·ḇi·’ū אֶל־ back to ’el- דָּוִ֑ד David . dā·wiḏ וְלֹ֤א But he refused wə·lō אָבָה֙ . . . ’ā·ḇāh לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֔ם to drink it ; liš·tō·w·ṯām וַיַּסֵּ֥ךְ instead , he poured it out way·yas·sêḵ אֹתָ֖ם - ’ō·ṯām לַֽיהוָֽה׃ to YHWH , Yah·weh 2 Samuel 23:17 וַיֹּ֡אמֶר saying , way·yō·mer חָלִילָה֩ “ Far be it ḥā·lî·lāh לִּ֨י from me , lî יְהוָ֜ה O YHWH , Yah·weh מֵעֲשֹׂ֣תִי to do mê·‘ă·śō·ṯî זֹ֗את this ! zōṯ הֲדַ֤ם Is [this not] the blood hă·ḏam הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ of the men hā·’ă·nā·šîm הַהֹלְכִ֣ים . . . ha·hō·lə·ḵîm בְּנַפְשׁוֹתָ֔ם who risked their lives ? ” bə·nap̄·šō·w·ṯām וְלֹ֥א So he refused wə·lō אָבָ֖ה . . . ’ā·ḇāh לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֑ם to drink it . liš·tō·w·ṯām אֵ֣לֶּה Such ’êl·leh עָשׂ֔וּ were the exploits ‘ā·śū שְׁלֹ֖שֶׁת of the three šə·lō·šeṯ הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃ס mighty men . hag·gib·bō·rîm 2 Samuel 23:18 וַאֲבִישַׁ֞י Now Abishai , wa·’ă·ḇî·šay אֲחִ֣י׀ the brother ’ă·ḥî יוֹאָ֣ב of Joab yō·w·’āḇ בֶּן־ and son ben- צְרוּיָ֗ה of Zeruiah , ṣə·rū·yāh ה֚וּא - hū רֹ֣אשׁ was chief rōš הַשְּׁלֹשִׁי of the Three , haš·šə·lō·šī וְהוּא֙ and he wə·hū עוֹרֵ֣ר lifted ‘ō·w·rêr אֶת־ - ’eṯ- חֲנִית֔וֹ his spear ḥă·nî·ṯōw עַל־ against ‘al- שְׁלֹ֥שׁ three šə·lōš
