גִּדְר֨וֹת . . . giḏ·rō·wṯ עַל־ along ‘al- הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ the road , had·de·reḵ וְשָׁ֣ם where there was wə·šām מְעָרָ֔ה a cave , mə·‘ā·rāh שָׁא֖וּל and he šā·’ūl וַיָּבֹ֥א went in way·yā·ḇō לְהָסֵ֣ךְ to relieve lə·hā·sêḵ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- רַגְלָ֑יו himself . raḡ·lāw וְדָוִד֙ And David wə·ḏā·wiḏ וַאֲנָשָׁ֔יו and his men wa·’ă·nā·šāw יֹשְׁבִֽים׃ were hiding yō·šə·ḇîm בְּיַרְכְּתֵ֥י in the recesses bə·yar·kə·ṯê הַמְּעָרָ֖ה of the cave . ham·mə·‘ā·rāh 1 Samuel 24:4 דָוִ֜ד So David’s ḏā·wiḏ אַנְשֵׁ֨י men ’an·šê וַיֹּאמְרוּ֩ said way·yō·mə·rū אֵלָ֗יו to him , ’ê·lāw הִנֵּ֨ה “ This is hin·nêh הַיּ֜וֹם the day hay·yō·wm אֲ about which ’ăšer- יְהוָ֣ה YHWH Yah·weh אָמַ֧ר said ’ā·mar אֵלֶ֗יךָ to you , ’ê·le·ḵā הִנֵּ֨ה ‘ Behold , hin·nêh אָנֹכִ֜י I ’ā·nō·ḵî נֹתֵ֤ן will deliver nō·ṯên אֹיְבֶיךָ your enemy ʾō·yə·ḇɛ·ḵå̄ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ into your hand , bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ that you may do wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā לּ֔וֹ with him lōw כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר as ka·’ă·šer יִטַ֣ב you wish yi·ṭaḇ בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ . . . . ’” bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā דָּוִ֗ד Then David dā·wiḏ וַיָּ֣קָם crept up way·yā·qām בַּלָּֽט׃ secretly bal·lāṭ וַיִּכְרֹ֛ת and cut off way·yiḵ·rōṯ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- כְּנַֽף־ a corner kə·nap̄- לְשָׁא֖וּל of Saul’s lə·šā·’ūl הַמְּעִ֥יל robe ham·mə·‘îl אֲשֶׁר־ - . ’ă·šer- 1 Samuel 24:5 וַֽיְהִי֙ - way·hî אַֽחֲרֵי־ Afterward ’a·ḥă·rê- כֵ֔ן . . . , ḵên דָּוִ֖ד David’s dā·wiḏ אֹת֑וֹ - ’ō·ṯōw לֵב־ conscience lêḇ- וַיַּ֥ךְ was stricken way·yaḵ עַ֚ל because ‘al אֲשֶׁ֣ר - ’ă·šer כָּרַ֔ת he had cut off kā·raṯ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- כָּנָ֖ף the corner kā·nāp̄ אֲשֶׁ֥ר - ’ă·šer לְשָׁאֽוּל׃ס of Saul’s robe . lə·šā·’ūl 1 Samuel 24:6 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר So he said way·yō·mer לַאֲנָשָׁ֜יו to his men , la·’ă·nā·šāw מֵֽיהוָ֗ה “ YHWH Yah·weh חָלִ֧ילָה forbid ḥā·lî·lāh אִם־ that ’im- לִּ֣י I lî אֶעֱשֶׂה֩ should do ’e·‘ĕ·śeh אֶת־ - ’eṯ- הַזֶּ֤ה such haz·zeh הַדָּבָ֨ר a thing had·dā·ḇār לַֽאדֹנִי֙ to my master , la·ḏō·nî יְהוָ֔ה YHWH’s Yah·weh לִמְשִׁ֣יחַ anointed . lim·šî·aḥ לִשְׁלֹ֥חַ May I never lift liš·lō·aḥ יָדִ֖י my hand yā·ḏî בּ֑וֹ against him , bōw כִּֽי־ since kî- הֽוּא׃ he hū יְהוָ֖ה is YHWH’s Yah·weh מְשִׁ֥יחַ anointed .” mə·šî·aḥ 1 Samuel 24:7 בַּדְּבָרִ֔ים With these words bad·də·ḇā·rîm דָּוִ֤ד David dā·wiḏ וַיְשַׁסַּ֨ע restrained way·šas·sa‘ אֶת־ - ’eṯ- אֲנָשָׁיו֙ his men , ’ă·nā·šāw וְלֹ֥א and he did not wə·lō נְתָנָ֖ם let them nə·ṯā·nām לָק֣וּם rise up lā·qūm אֶל־ against ’el-
